    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Benjamin Harrises Pt. 30
    2. Pam Stone
    3. Hello, everyone, I should first correct the information I sent in Part 29, where I noted David, son of Benjamin & Margaret, b. 1803, as David Harris II. David, son of Benjamin & Margaret was born in 1803, and was in fact younger than the son of Benjamin's younger brother, Obediah, whose son David was born in 1798. So David, son of Obediah Jr./II was David II, and David, the son of Benjamin Sr./II & Margaret Ingle Harris was David III. Sorry to create any confusion over the Davids. Also got some records out of sequence chronologically, which I will attempt to correct. Lots of folks to try to track! Here's more. 3. Dear Fran Hill and Interested Others, I have reread your query.  You believe your John Harris died ca 1795 and that he lived in Cumberland Co.  I did not find his name in my one book of Cumberland Co. church records [Southam Parish] Suggestion:  There is no existing 1790 census for Virginia.  Some clever ladies of Virginia compiled from Virginia personal property tax lists (not land taxes) of 1787 what they labeled the 1787 Census of Virginia. Warning:  These books (three volumes, vol. 3 being the index) are expensive and only certain libraries have these books.  Prowl the websites of university or college libraries near your home--and genealogical libraries also.  Some state libraries may have these volumes. Another warning:  The index listings for Harris surname are numerous.  This list includes Kentucky, which was still claimed by Virginia in 1787. Here is some info. Netti Schreiner-Yantis and Florine S. Love, The 1787 Census of Virginia [Springfield, VA:  GBIP, 1987] If you can locate on FamilySearch.org a link to FORMS, request a form with a title like this: Request for Photocopy (if you are near an LDS Family History Center ask whether they have copies of this form.  Request three or four, some being for future use.  You are ordering the index only at this time.  Then you will want certain pages after that, including a photocopy of the tax form which is in the first two volumes.  This form shows you what the marks on the tax lists are for:  how many taxables, certain livestock, etc.  You may find the LDS form is downloadable on familysearch.org, but, if so, I have not seen it. Using this form, and following the instructions for payment [inexpensive]you will request the index pages for the surname Harris, which will be in volume 3.  (This will not conform to the form, so you will have to be specific.  There will be about 2 1/2 or 3 paqes for the surname Harris, and for John, there will be a number of them. You indicate there was a will.  Anyone named in the will?  If children or in-laws are named, post another query and give those names.  Cumberland was formed from Goochand Co. but my books on Goochland Co. not cover years  beyond 1745. Good luck! Evelyn W.
