Dear Fran, I cannot help you immediately.  I have bought a newish book by Ann K. Blomquist, The Vestry Book of Southam Parish, Cumberland County, Virginia 1745-1792 [Westminster, MD:  Heritage Books, 2006]  The index has multiple entries for one Benjamin Harris.    There is mention of a John Harris, Jr. but the information is insufficient to identify him as your ancestor.  It only mentions him in Processioners returns 1792.  Why don't you see what the familyhistory.org has listed for Cumberland Co.?   Cumberland Co., south of the James River, was formed from Goochland Co, which was formed from Henrico Co. 1728. Suggestion:  Your Harris male was of an age wherein he may have participated in the American Revolution.  Have you accessed the DAR website to learn whether anyone has joined DAR on the patriotism of your Harris?  Some counties, after the Revolution, paid debts owed to older men and widows who donated food, etc. and these are called Virginia Publick Records [a booklet for each county].  Check familysearch wikis for some guidelines for Virginia.  You need to look at the land patents for Virginia which are on the Library of Virginia website.  Google for Library of Virginia, check the L list for Land Patents and choose the one which includes Northern Neck land grants.  The oldest patents will be at the *end of the line*--and there will be a ton of Harrises.  Evelyn W.
