I believe that the Gillam Debbie referred to is: Frances Melvina Harris (b ~1850 in Cannon Co, TN). She married Henry Gillam on Aug 27 1865 in Cannon Co, TN. Frances was the daughter of John Lee Harris (1822-1913) and Sarah Bryson. John Lee Harris was the eldest son of Claiborne Harris and Elizabeth Blanks. Claiborne Harris was born in Halifax Co, VA in 1798. He was the eldest son of Elijah Harris and Nancy Lee. Three male descendants of Elijah Harris have tested into YDNA Group 30: Randall Rogers Harris (my brother) descends from Elijah's son Joseph Stanley Russell Harris (my 2nd cousin) also descends from Elijah's son Joseph Robert Harris (my 4C1R) descends from Elijah's son Claiborne. [Note: Pat Seaver descends from Elijah's daughter Martha (Harris) Morefield] I've never looked into Henry Gillam, so don't know anything about his ancestry, but would like to. Sandy
I have a Gilliam family who settled here in Heppner and Morrow County, Oregon Their names are: Birdie, Cornelius, Earl, Eugene, Frank, Jackson E., Lou, Ona. Colonel Cornelius was a native of North Carolina, and was part of a military group active during one of the indian wars. He was killed accidentally at Wells Springs, Morrow, Oregon while leading a group of men. He was 49 years old when killed 20, March, 1848. He was also a lay Baptist preacher. [This was after the Whitman massacre at Walla Walla, Oregon Territory (now in Washington state]. He was initially buried at Wells Springs and then his remains were returned to Polk County, Oregon. Several other Gilliam families moved from the Willamette Valley, where they had settled in the large emigrations of the 1840s, back east to this area in the late 1860s. One family began a mercantile in Heppner. The building is still there with the name "Gilliam" on the upper facade. It survived the Heppner 14, June, 1903 flood, due to a flash flood, that devastated the town and killed over 247 men, women and children. There was one JOHN J. HARRIS listed as being a victim of this flood, also listed in "HOMESTEADS AND HERITAGES", Author, Giles French are two other HARRIS names associated with this area. Clarence HARRIS, of IONE, who was killed in WWII, and in 1885 an M.C. HARRIS, who is listed as the editor of the "Riverside Enterprise" newspaper. At the time of the early settlers the whole of E. Oregon (until it's statehood in 1889) was listed as Wasco County, although slowly counties began to develop across E. Oregon. Although there are still Harris families listed in our phone book, I have no idea if they are related in any way....My family connections were in both Idaho, Nevada, California, as well as Oregon (where I was born and raised....and still here). I am wondering if any of the Harris list members have contacted any Gilliam/Gillum (etc.) list members to try to ascertain where these connections originally started? And which Harris branch (or branches) seem to have connections with the Gilliams?
