    3. Evelyn, James Harris married Susannah Gass is the son of Samuel and Rebecca Morrison Harris - NOT Christopher as I believe you inadvertently typed below. Ann Gary ----- Original Message ----- Dear Ann Gary and other interested parties: Thank you for your diligent research (and wonderful biography) on James Harris, the son (I will have to check, but I think you have convinced me) of Christopher Harris of early Madison Co., KY.  His wife was Susannah Gass. (For Madison Co., KY reseachers interested in the early Harris family of Madison Co., KY, may I suggest you subscribe to Harris-Hunters at rootsweb and read the submissions, especially these last few months.  Many of our exchanges have to do with the family of Christopher Harris, an early settler in Madison Co. and his numerous progeny--and sometimes his parental family.) To Anny Gary--I have taken the liberty of cutting and pasting your e-mail in the notes which my old genealogical program allows me to enter bios, research notes and other word processing in rich text format (rtf). I think Pam Stone, a diligent Harris-Hunter, has discovered that the eldest son of Christopher Harris by his [reputed] first wife Mary Dabney also went to North Carolina, part of which became Tennessee. That son's name was Dabney Harris. New Bern, North Carolina, however, as I found out some years ago when my now deceased spouse spent a week near New Bern--and I even prowled the library, is somewhat different than the western part of that Southern state..  However, the owner of a nice boat, for a fee, who showed us the shore, told us that there was a difference culturally between Eastern North Carolina and Western North Carolina.  (I had asked her why so many old automobiles were decaying on the land.) Incidentally, I have ancestors of another common name of colonial Granville co. NC, and there a goodly number of Harris families in that area, which in its early days consisted of nearly ALL of Northern North Carolina, according to Helen Leary, *Mrs. North Carolina genealogy* as far as I am concerned.  I recommend you look over any and all books edited and published by Margaret M. Hofmann [note spelling]. She has edited and published at least four volumes of colonial land patents of North Carolina.  These volumes are good people-finders, if you have lost your Virginians!!!  Or Pennsylvanians.  And others seeking opportunity--and freedom from the Anglican church--and perhaps from primogeniture. Thanks for sharing. Evelyn W. Later,  it appears James Harris was present in Madison Co.  He was not only an agent of Edward Harris of the town of Newbern in the State of North Carolina, a deed executed 3 Sept 1798, but also he was an a witness to the deed.  (DB D-570, film FHL 183,285) It is unknown whether there was a blood relationship between Edward Harris of Newbern, NC and  James Harris of Madison Co., KY; however, Edward Harris is not named in the will of Christopher Harris I of Madison Co." This James Harris, son of Samuel and Rebecca Morrison Harris, was the brother of Judge Edward Harris of Newbern, NC. Judge Edward Harris died intestate and had no children.  James Harris who married Susannah Gass died in Franklin County, Tennessee.  Judge Edward Harris was a large land owner, and many deeds are of record with his heirs signing.
