    1. Chancery Records in Virginia
    2. I copied this from a posting on the VA Southside list - a list almost as active as Harris-Hunters and full of information most of the time. Subj: [VA-ROOTS] Lunenburg Co. chancery records added to LVA's Chancery Records Index Date: 6/2/2004 10:05:02 AM Pacific Daylight Time From: chancery@LVA.LIB.VA.US (Chancery at LVA) Sender: VA-ROOTS@LISTLVA.LIB.VA.US (Research and writing about Virginia genealogy and family history.) Reply-to: chancery@LVA.LIB.VA.US (Chancery at LVA) To: VA-ROOTS@LISTLVA.LIB.VA.US Please excuse any cross postings. An initial offering of the index to the chancery records of Lunenburg Co. from 1749-1921 has been added to the Library of Virginia's Chancery Records Index Web site. The index in its current state does not include the image numbers pinpointing the exact location of a case on a reel of microfilm. As it stands, the index provides the researcher with a microfilm reel number. The researcher must then scroll through the reel to find the case for which he or she is looking. Work on providing image numbers and fine- tuning the data will be completed in a few months. At that time we will post the complete index. Lunenburg Co. is in the Southeastern Piedmont region which adds it to the records of three other localities available for searching in that region: Brunswick, Dinwiddie and Mecklenburg. The Lunenburg Co. records are microfilmed. You may view the microfilm at the Library of Virginia or the Lunenburg Co. Circuit Court clerk's office. There is no InterLibrary Loan copy of the microfilm. Please be sure to check the "What's Available" page of the Chancery Records Index to see all the localities that have indexes posted and records ready for viewing. To access the Chancery Records Index please visit http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/local/chancery/index.htm Please do not respond to the list with any questions you may have. This e- mail account is not registered to view list postings. To contact this account, please respond directly to chancery@lva.lib.va.us or use the "Contact" link on the site. This is my own Comment: Comment: I searched the Albemarle Co. list (not all Virginia counties appear on this website) for Harris which includes Harrison and found many persons listed with the two surnames--Harris and Harrison. One can search for both the complainant and the defendant, but first you must choose a county. Knowing that my Harris family lurked in Albemarle Co., I searched for Harrises in both categories. There is another unnamed category, which probably includes the names of any other Harrises which appear in the chancery record. For example, one Harris may have given a deposition in which he/she is neither a complainant nor a defendant, and perhaps he [she] would be listed. Most chancery records in Virginia do not seem to pertain to my families who skedaddled to such places as North Carolina and Kentucky, but once in a while one may find a relative has given a deposition giving some valuable information to help you link persons (perhaps those unamed females in your database) to others in your family. I hope you find some useful information. I personally thank the Commonwealth of Virginia for promoting this accessibility to their records--as they say, Virginia is where it all began! E.W.Wallace
