Hi, Harrises, This will definitely help in identifying some Harrises who were in north central North Carolina [especially Jacqueline Tilley Wilkerson, whose Nathaniel Harris died in 1846...] - Pam pamstone@digital.net ===================================== Extracted from: NATIONAL SOCIETY OF DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION, DAVIE POPLAR CHAPTER: Abstracts of Wills Recorded 1752-1800 in Orange County, North Carolina: Will Book A, B, and C, Plus 20 Pages in Book D, and 202 Early Marriages Not Shown in the Orange County Marriage Bonds; Shields, Ruth Herndon, Chairman, Genealogical Records Committee; Copyright, 1957, 1966, by NSDAR, Davie Poplar Chaper, Chapel Hill, NC; Published, 1972, 1979, by Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, MD, USA; LOC #72-000078; ISBN #0-8063-0504-5 --- [Note: Book are unpaginated; wills are numbered sequentially. I was sent this info a long time ago, and, unfortunately, just noted the names there, as I didn't think there could be any connection between the Orange Co. and northwest North Carolina Harrises. Now, though, I am not so sure... Can anyone help out with 1790 Orange census, or with tax lists or deeds, or whatever, from there about that time? - As I have related before, my Harris in NWNC was William, who lived in Culpeper, VA before moving to Surry/Wilkes, NC. Living on one side of him in 1790 was Thomas WELSH/WALSH/WELCH [who was Will's neighbor in Culpeper, VA, too], and on the other side in 1790 was Susannah Harris [relationship unknown.] He was the only male Harris in his area at that time [Dabney Harris & a few others were listed in Wilkes on that census, as the Mitchell River Community, now in Surry Co., was part of Wilkes then. Our William lived in the Edwards area, a short distance west of Elkin, Surry Co.] About 1795 or 1796, our William moved to Ashe Co., NC for a number of years [exact reason unknown, but he did not sell his Wilkes Co. land.] While in Ashe Co., William lived close to the Virginia line, as he was listed in a court road order that mentioned the state line. He remained there until about 1813, when he moved back to Wilkes Co. I should also mention that there was a Nathaniel Harris in Culpeper, VA in 1781---Nathaniel seemed to have lived a good distance away from our Will there; possibly Nathaniel lived in what is now Madison Co., or what is now another county even further west. I don't know whose land either man lived on in Culpeper, nor, despite truly exhausting investigation of Culpeper and many surrounding counties, have I been able to determine either man's origins. I don't know if the younger Orange Co., NC Nathaniel Harris was related to the man who was in Culpeper, or may even have been the same? as the younger Orange Nathaniel. [BTW, the man who filed for a Revolutionary War pension in Culpeper, VA in 1832, mentioning no family, was not the same man as was listed in Culpeper, VA in 1781. The 1781 Harris was our William.] In 1790, "a" Nathaniel Harris was recorded in Wilkes, NC, with a household consisting of 2 fw males over 16, 1 male under 16, and 3 females (National Archives Microfilm Roll # M 637_7, 1790 Federal Census, Wilkes Co., NC, printed p. 183 [h.w. p. 512.]) Nathaniel was living five households from a Moses Harris, whose household was 1 fw male over 16, 2 males under 16, and 4 females. Neither man owned any slaves. And, while my Will was in Ashe in 1800, Nathaniel Harris was again recorded in Wilkes Co. [remember that this census was alpha by surname, so rats! we don't get the neighborhood placement.] Nathaniel's household on that census consisted of 1 fw male under 10, 2 males 16-25, 1 female under 10, and one female 16-25. Also recorded in 1800 were: Hugh Harris, and a James Harris. Hugh Harris' household consisted of 2 fw males under 10, 1 male 45+, 1 fw female under 10, 2 females 10-15, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 45+; and one slave. James Harris' family was made up of 2 fw males under 10, 1 male 26-44, 1 fw female under 10, 1 female 10-15, and 1 female 25-44. (National Archives Microfilm Roll # M 32_33, 1800 Federal Census, Wilkes Co., NC, printed & h.w. p. 44.) One other Harris there in 1800 was an Absalom Harris, whose household consisted of 2 fw males under 10, 1 male 26-44, and 2 fw females 26-44 (Ibid., p. 42.) ----- All these men had left Wilkes Co., by 1810. The only Harris recorded in Wilkes Co. at that time was a Thomas Harris, whose household consisted of 3 fw males under 10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 45+, 2 fw females under 10, 2 females 10-15, 2 females 16-25, and 1 female 26-44. (National Archives Microfilm Roll # M 252_43, 1800 Federal Census, Wilkes Co., NC, printed p. 284 [h.w. p. 901.]) ----- I don't know where any of the other 1800 Wilkes Co. men were in 1810---does anyone? - Nathaniel appeared in Orange Co. in 1820. [The same man???] - Pam pamstone@digital.net
