He first married Narcissa Dove HARRIS, 29 August 1844. She was the daughter of William and Nancy HARRIS of Jackson, Tennessee. In the Madison County, Tennessee Minute Book No. 7, pp. 360-363, is a decree that lists the heirs of William HARRIS and the disposition of his estate. His daughter, Narcissa D. Alexander, is listed in the 10th item as the deceased wife of James M. Alexander of Missouri (she being a daughter of William HARRIS), viz. Louisa Jane Alexander, Sarah Amanda Alexander, Mary Miranda Alexander and Felix Duncan Alexander, minors who appear by their next friend, Nancy HARRIS of Madison County, Tennessee. Louisa Jane Alexander married John F. Hunt in Madison County, Tennessee 3 June 1868. Sarah Amanda Alexander married Andrew Jackson Sellars in Madison County, Tennessee, 18 January 1871. No trace has been found of the other two children. James Monroe Alexander m 2) 1 Mar 1855 Sarah Frances Lindsay Russell b 11 May 1825 d June 1905 Platte County, Missouri. She m first Elishu Russell, 3 Apr 1851, in Buchanan Co., MO. The authors of the Pamunkey Neighbors book give the ancestry of Sarah Frances Lindsay, second wife of James M. Alexander, but nothing more on Narcissa Dove Harris or her parents. Sarah Frances Lindsay's ancestry leads back to early Lindsay's of Essex, Caroline, and Orange Counties, VA.
