My Harris husband is in the DNA project # 8991 There is a mailing list that some of you may care to join.... Harris-DNA-L@Rootsweb.com I have previously volunteered to administer a fund that any of the Harris group might care to donate to in order to establish the various lines of the Harris group. My suggestion is that possibly a committee or group agree that a certain line had enough documentation that a test might be done....that way not everyone say from the Robert Harris line would need to be tested, or not everyone from the William Harris Temperance Overton Line would have to be tested.... If we could have some ideas and discussions along that line, it would be very helpful. As to playing "nice", I think this thread was started by someone saying that the Harris group as a rule (a vast generalization by the way) was snobbish, etc, etc.... I think if you rise to the bait on that type of e-mail, then the list starts to spin. Let us ignore the people who try to diminish us as a group, and concentrate on what interests us most, which is the truth about our lines. Let's work together and not become factionalized. Let's make something positive out of this and try to move forward on things that will help us. Pat Mason Harris
Pat, I loved your E-mail. Thanks. I am willing to contribute to or even pay the entire costs for the DNA test or tests for a "proven" Harris male descendant of Gray Harris (about 1802-05 -- 26 Oct 1880). My Gray Harris was born in North Carolina. I have reason to believe that my Gray Harris might have been from the Granville County area of NC (Warren, Granville, Bute, Franklin counties), but this is not proven. He died at Jones Crossing, Upatoi, Muscogee County Georgia on 26 Oct 1880. He lived in Putnam County GA where he married Nancy Fuller. He also lived in Stewart County GA and Chattahoochee Co GA before finally settling in Muscogee County GA. Although Gray Harris married three times, all of his male descendants are from Nancy Fuller. Four of his five sons had sons. His sons were: Simeon Harris, William Harris, Cornelius Richard Harris, and Andrew Jackson Harris. I have done extensive research on all of the children of Gray Harris and Nancy Fuller. So far as I know, Simeon Harris only had daughters, but the other four sons did have at least one son. Problem is that I have not researched any of these grandsons of Gray Harris and know of no Harris researcher who has. Here is what I know. I hope that it rings a bell with someone out there. (1) William Harris had: William Harris, Walter K. Harris, James Harris, Robert D. Harris, Eugene Harris, Emory Harris, and Gordon Harris. But I know virtually nothing about these men. They were all born between about 1859 and 1879 in the same parts of GA in which Gray Harris lived. However, they were in Tallapoosa County AL for the 1880 Census before returning to GA and at least the youngest son, Gordon Harris, was born in AL. The only death date I have for any of these sons is Robert D. Harris who was buried in 1886 in the Lumpkin Cemetery, East Side, Stewart Co GA, at the age of only 17. (2) Andrew Jackson Harris lived until 1910 in Columbus, Muscogee County, GA. He sons were: Robert Harris, A. Lafayette Harris, Henry Curtis Harris, and Herbert R. Harris. I have no years of birth for any of them entered in my database, but Andrew Jackson Harris's descendants were as the sands on the beach and they mostly stayed in and around Columbus GA. Problem is I do not know any of them. (3) I only know of one son of Cornelius Richard Harris: Andrew Harris, born about 1875 in or around Randolph Co GA. Cornelius Richard Harris was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness and was almost totally blind. He married late and had two children that I know of. Most Gray Harris researchers did not even know that Cornelius Richard Harris was ever married, much less having a son. But he did. So, I hope that this is not an insurmountable problem. Thanks for all of these efforts at advancing what we know about our Harris ancestors. > -----Original Message----- > From: PatCLARE@aol.com [mailto:PatCLARE@aol.com] > Sent: Saturday, September 11, 2004 11:45 AM > To: HARRIS-HUNTERS-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [HH] Harris DNA, costs, and playing nice > > > My Harris husband is in the DNA project # 8991 > > There is a mailing list that some of you may care to join.... > > Harris-DNA-L@Rootsweb.com > > > I have previously volunteered to administer a fund that any > of the Harris group might care to donate to in order to > establish the various lines of the Harris group.
