For Kristina who is searching for Newsom Harris. I don't know the time frame for the one you are looking for but in Cheatham County, TN there was a Dr. James Monroe Harris who died probably in the 1950's and was probably born somewhere in the late 1800's. His parents were Newsom Harris and Mary Harris. I'm not sure if Mary's maiden name was Harris too or not. Dr. Harris is buried in Cheatham County and I think his parents were from either Mississippi or Alabama. Somewhere I have a family tree of a woman who was descended from a Claiborne Thompson Harris who I think lived in Alabama. If I can find it I will post it with the Harris Hunters for you to see. I think you were interested in Thompson Harris? Sarah Harris Andrews
Sarah, Thanks for your note. I've been searching for information on Thompson and Jane (Beckman) Harris. I've stumbled across several people who supposedly had knowledge about the family but so far, haven't discovered anything that I didn't already know. It's a link that I'm extremely interested in but still a little too far removed to spend time and money pursuing. So, I have confined my search to primarily free resources like census records; at one point, I also ordered the land records of Monroe County, MS. All that I can say is that it appears that my family crossed paths with Thompson and Jane Harris. I'm pretty sure that my branch of the family migrated into Alabama from Tennessee. The matriarch was probably Sarah Swinney Harris who may have been native to Bedford County, TN. Her 1st husband was James Harris. He died 1830 - 1833; her BLM land entry file identified her as a widow. Then she ended up back in Jefferson County, AL (from Green / Pickens County, AL) where my ancestor was born (1838.) She was probably married to Joel Harris although I haven't found a record. The LDS library catalog identifies a number of pages missing from the marriage records of Jefferson County. The census records of James Harris (1830 Green County) identified 2 male children and 1 or 2 girls. I have pretty much identified the eldest son as William M. Harris. The second son may have been John P Harris who ended up in Thompson's household in Rusk County, TX. 1850. I found marriage records for a 3rd male in Jefferson County (James M Harris) who may also have had ties to Sarah Harris but whether he was her son or the son of Joel Harris --- I don't know. In any case, James M Harris (and my direct ancestor, General M Harris) died in the Civil War. James married Susan Ritch and had 2 daughters and they married into the Latham and Hitt families. John P Harris ended up in Texas (Rusk and Hopkins Counties and then he died after about 1873. So far, I've been unable to find out when or where either he or Elizabeth died. Some of their children ended up in Oklahoma. I've also looked for Jane Harris whose descendents did some research into the Beckham family; they claim that she was alive until after 1880 but to date, have not found any sign of her. She would have been over 80 years old by 1880. One record shows a Jane Harris (+ 84 ) in Georgia but don't know whether or not it is her. I found an index entry for a property transfer (Thompson to Jane Harris ) in Rusk Count, TX. which leads me to believe that Thompson died about 1853 or so but the actual record was destroyed in a courthouse fire. Every time I find new information I end up in a burn county or records destruction from the Civil War. Any new ideas are always welcome.
