    3. I have found some discrepancies in your information with data on the family of Gabriel Maupin and Ann Spencer as given in a manuscript written by the late Dr. Socrates Maupin, Dean at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, VA. I do not know which is correct―your data from "A History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri" by William S. Bryan and Robert Rose, or Dr. Maupin's. Dr. Maupin died in 1871. He was the son of Chapman Maupin, grandson of William G. Maupin, and great grandson of Daniel Maupin. This often-quoted Maupin genealogist should have been in position to know the truth, because of the time that he lived and his strategic location. However, he could have been wrong, too. Dr. Maupin lists Anna Spencer as the wife of Thomas Maupin, and does not list a son named Gabriel. The children you have listed are the children of Thomas Maupin and Anna Spencer, according to Dr. Maupin. However, like you, he says that Athanasius T. (Arthur T.?) and Joel came to Missouri. Also, he indicates that Thomas came, too. Here is the information that Socrates Maupin gave on ancestors and the children of Thomas and Anna Maupin: 1. Gabriel Maupin married Ann Ballard 2. Daniel Maupin married Jane Via (Now the family of Thomas and Anna Maupin) 3. Thomas Maupin married Anna Spencer (daughter of John & Rosanna Spencer) 4. John Maupin married Rosanna Maupin 4. Daughter (Nancy ?) Maupin married Pleasant Via 4. Clifton Maupin married Elizabeth Maupin 4. Patsy Maupin married Turner Wood 4. Joel Maupin married Martha Gentry 4. Rosanna Maupin married Unknown Wood 4. Susanna Maupin married William Via 4. Athanasius T. (Arthur T.) Maupin married Daughter of Jerrell Harris 4. Thomas Maupin married Unknown Harris 4. Mary (Polly ?) Maupin married ThomasClarke (Socrates Maupin does not list a David Maupin as one of the children.) I have been interested in the Maupin's for two reasons: (1) I have always hoped to prove kin to them, since the surnames in their family tree are frequently the same as the surnames in my Harris line, and (2) one of the co-founders of the university where I taught for 37 years was a James Rogers Maupin.
