    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Predecessor Counties of Lunenburg Co., VA
    2. Lunenburg Co., Virginia, where Belva has centered much of her research, was formed in 1745 from Brunswick County. Brunswick Co. in turn was formed Formed in 1720 from Prince George County. Parts of Surry and Isle of Wight counties were added later. Perhaps more research for Harrises and their colleagues should be concentrated in the above named counties. But also in the counties formed from Lunenburg Co., such as Mecklenburg Co., and even Granville Co. NC. A distant cousin pointed out to me that Grassey Creek was not only in Virginia (Mecklenburg Co.) but also in Granville Co., NC. This occurred when I noted a daughter and an aunt of some of our colonial ancestors was *wheeling and dealing* as a widow, in land along Grassey Creek in Mecklenburg Co. Her son, to whom she willed a piece of property in Mecklenburg, is found in records in both Granville Co. and in Mecklenburg Co. He died testate in the latter county, and the probate records are rather numerous. Some pointers I have received from skilled professionals: 1) Note the associates of your families - which Belva has done quite well. (These were probably in-laws, or might soon be.) 2. Note the watercourses on which their land was held. Check out all the neighbors, which you can generally get from the land recods. (See 1 above) 3. If researching in Virginia, research in all the counties. The counties kept dividing, and, furthermore, with so many burnt counties in Virginia, one might stumble on an ancestor or a collateral in another county. Tobacco wore out the land, historians tell us, and new land was desirable. Caveat: Do NOT assume that persons of the same name are the same person, and may not even be related. This is especially so with families with common surnames, and I have plenty of those. Researching in Virginia is challenging, to say the least. Beginning with the land patents which are online at .http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/land/index.htm is a good beginning. But, if available to you, also check the published lists in the eight volumes of Cavaliers and Pioneers. The oldest volumes by Nell Marion Nugent may be on the shelves at your local library. The indexes in C&P also index the creeks, runs, paths, roads, counties, etc. The oldest land patents (or grants, as they are called in Northern Neck Virginia) are at the ends of the list, with the newest patents at the beginning. So skip to the end of the list, in the case of a common surname Harris!!! Also, if one has access to the online genealogical database HeritageQuest through your local [or nearby] public library, do a book search for PLACE - Lunenburg and Mecklenburg Counties, Virginia. You may want to get some instructions from the librarian as to how to search, unless you are really a techie!!! Two books by Landon Covington Bell concerning Lunenburg Co. and Mecklenburg Cos. are on HQ. As I remember, they were rather useful to me. Bell, as I recall, gives some history of those counties, and I seem to remember seeing some tithable lists. It has been years since I have looked at his books--and found *stuff* of interest to me.
