Those who are acquainted with some of the history of the Harris family, descendants of whom migrated to Madison Co., KY, are asked to help me with the identity of one Matthew Harris, living in Albemarle Co., VA in 1758. Robert Harris, of course, was a former resident of colonial Louisa Co., VA, where he was surveyor at times, a member of the House of Burgesses at times, and a large landowner in Louisa Co. from which part of Albemarle Co. was formed. I do not recognize, nor have I found evidence, that Matthew Harris is a member of Robert's family. He could have been a grandson, a nephew, or any other close relationship. What is your take on his identity? Here is an abstracted document executed by Robert Harris to his son-in-law John Rodes of Albemarle Co. JOHN RODES. (Living in 1766 in Albemarle Co.) He reportedly was the husband of Sarah Harris, daughter of Major Robert Harris of Louisa Co. Albemarle Co. DB 2-67 verifies that by 1758 John Rodes was married to the daughter [unnamed] of Robert Harris. Harris deeded slaves to John Rodes "me thereunto moving but more especially for the natural love and affection which I have and bear unto my son in Law John Rodes....give grant bargain sell unto the said John Rodes & his heirs the following Negroes [two slaves, who are named]. 26 Aug 1758 /s/ Robert Harris. Wits: Matthew Harris, David Lewis, Joel Terril, Andrew Wallace." On court date, Albemarle Co., 14th day of Sept 1758 the deed poll was proved by the oaths of Matthew Harris, Joel Terril and Andrew Wallace. (Adapted from Ruth and Sam Sparacio, DEED ABSTRACTS OF ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VIRGINIA, DEED BOOK 2, 9 FEBRUARY 1758-12 MARCH 1761 [McLean, VA: Ruth & Sam Sparacio, 1988] p. 20) Note: Andrew Wallace is not linked to my spouse's family, who migrated from Ireland in the 1840s to Massachusetts. A good many Scots-Irish people from Pennsylvania migrated down the Shenandoah Valley prior to the American Revolution. One will find their records in those counties along the Blue Ridge, both in Virginia and in North Carolina. Submitted by E.W.Wallace descendant of Robert Harris's son Christopher Harris of early Madison Co., KY **************Looking for simple solutions to your real-life financial challenges?
