    1. Re: [HARRIS-HUNTERS] [MADKY] [changed subject] URL for Madison Co., KY Marriages & Burgin Notes
    2. In a message dated 9/1/2008 12:04:21 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: _http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cramsey/madco_a.html_ (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cramsey/madco_a.html) Thanks, Mary Alice, I had not discovered this URL, and I am thankful you brought it to my attention. Burgin is NOT a surname I am familiar with. I know a Burgin married into the Harris family. However, under the list of marriages for Burgins, Nancy Burgin is married to Benjamin Hams. Wrong!!! The surname is Harris. I understand the difficulty of reading old handwriting. However, as I read old Madison Co., deeds, I knew somehow the Tevis family was related, to some degree, with the extended Harris family. As stated Nancy Burgin married Benjamin Harris, but after Benjamin's death, she married Nathaniel Tevis. Here is what I copied from the URL you cited: Burgin, Nancy Hams, Benjamin [Book] 03 Jun 14 1792 Here is some information from notes I have made about Nancy Burgin. Appar ently she had three marriages. No wonder we cannot find our females--name changes!!!! It is helpful to read court records, deeds, guardianship papers when we can find them, etc. Censuses are NOT enough, as we old-timers know. Rev 12/03 NANCY BURGIN. WIR02115 Daughter of Dennis Burgin. She married Benjamin Harris, son of the elder Christopher Harris 12 June 1792, Higgarson [Higgason] Harris, being the bondsman. (Bill & Kathy Vockery, MADISON COUNTY KENTUCKY MARRIAGES, Vol. I [Richmond, KY: Privately published, 1993], p. 37) Benjamin apparently did not live too long after the marriage, dying before Oct 1795. By 1797, Nancy Harris had remarried to Nathaniel Tivis/Tevis. This marriage appears in Vockery & Vockery, MARRIAGES OF MADISON CO., KY: Nathaniel Tevis & Nancy Harris (Burgin scratched out), 15 Aug 1797; Thomas Burgin, bondsman; Dennis Burgin, father of bride (consent). The following court record verifies that Nancy is the widow of Benjamin Harris: 3 Oct 1797: A relinquishment of dower between Nancy Tivis [sic], widow and relict of Benjamin Harris, deceased to Evans Watson was ordered recorded. (Jackie Couture, MADISON COUNTY, KENTUCKY COURT ORDER BOOK B, 1791-1801 [Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, Inc., 2000], p. 196). Apparently, Nancy Burgin Harris Tevis was again widowed shortly after the above marriage, unless there was another Nathaniel Tevis in Madison Co. There is another court record: 2 Oct 1798: The last will and testament of Nathaniel Tivis, deceased was proved by John Sappington, Robert Raburn and Edward Davis and ordered recorded. On the motion of Robert Tivis and John Wheeler the executors therein named a certificate is granted them for obtaining probate, whereupon they entered into bond with James Hendricks as security. It is ordered that John Strawhorn, Thomas Clay, Hartley and John Sappington or any three inventory and appraise the estate and make report. (Ibid., p. 224-225) On 25 Oct 1808, it seems Nancy (Burgin) (Harris) Tevis again married: William Raburn and Nancy Tevis, 25 Oct 1808; Thomas Tevis, bondsman. (Vockery & Vockery, V. I, p. 67) Nancy seems to have at least one child, Polly, by Benjamin Harris. Madison Co. DB G-346, 2 Dec 1809, Harris heirs to McMillen, Thomas Burgan [sic] guardian to Polly Harris, infant of Benjamin Harris, decd. A full transcript of the deed is found in the biography of Jane Gentry, who was the sister of Benjamin Harris. (FHL film 0183287) Apparently, Nancy was related to some degree to an early settler of Madison Co.--one Isaac Burgin, possibly an uncle to Nancy. Isaac's will appears in Madison Co. Will Bk A-56. Following is an abstract in which Dennis Burgin, father of Nancy is executor. A-56 Isaac Burgin, farmer. Dau. Nancy, wife Mary. Dennis Burgin, exor. Property to be divided among all my children (not named). Liaven Gray, Chas Burgin, witss. Prob. Mar. 1794. (FHL film 162,017, p. 26 of a page labeled "The Nebraska and Midwest", with an article entitled "Kentucky Wills--Madison County." Possibly this is from Kentucky Register, a quarterly published by the Kentucky Historical Society.) .... These Burgins are on the 1789 tax list of Madison Co. KY: Charles 1 WM; 3 horses Dennis 3 WM; 9 horses Isaac 1 WM; 9 horses Jacob 1 WM; 6 horses These Burgin males were purchasers at the estate sale of Benjamin Harris, deceased, 19 Nov 1795 (but recorded 5 Dec 1797): Charles Burgin, Dennis Burgin, Thomas Burgin. **************It's only a deal if it's where you want to go.
