I was a beginner and did not copy the whole source) There is a will for a Thompson Harris in Guilford Co., dated 1775 in will book A/152, original at State Archives in NC. Source: Thornton W. Mitchell, North Carolina Wills: A Testator Index, 1665-1900, corrected and revised edition [Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1992, second printing 1993] A little backgrond Helen Leary, a well-known lecturer, genealogist, editor, etc. indicated in a long-ago lecture at a NGS conference in Richmond, Virginia that many North Carolinians came from Virginia. Johnson indicates that Orange County as formed in 1752 from parts of Bladen, Granville and Johnston Cos., NC. Johnson notes that his source is File No. T.O. 105.1, State Department of Archives and History, Raleigh, NC. Prior to 1770, Orange Co. took in all of the present-day counties of Orange, Caswell, Person, Alamance, Chatham, most of Durham, small parts of Wake and Lee, and the eastern third of Rockingham,Guilford and Randolph. (Source: Johnson) These changing county boundaries are what keep us genealogists looking into the records of MANY counties, and if the county bordered another State, as did North Carolina, then we have to look across the State lines!!! Example: I study a man named Robert Williams of early Pittsylvania Co., VA. He married his Granville Co. NC's cousin's young widow Sarah Williams nee Lanier. But both these partners had relatives just across the State line in North Carolina. Watch where that county is located. Study the adjoining counties, especially if the creek or river is in both or many counties!!!
