    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Joel Harris of Albemarle Co.,VA - Power of Attorney; some info about his parents
    2. Dear Harris-Hunters, and other interested parties: A good friend who tells me she has a good many films of deeds of Madison Co., KY sent me the following: Found in Madison Co KY Deed Bk D, page 561: Joel Harris of Albemarle Co Virginia, constitute John Harris, Daniel Maupin, James Berry all of them of Madison Co KY, to be my lawful attorneys in my name to demand, recover ad receive by all lawful ways and means whatsover, all such debts and business of any kind such as securing and dividing and releasing of land and receiving, paying and demanding doing all business that may acrew before them the above named John Harris, Daniel Maupin and James Berry in the State of Kentucky...... 6 Dec 1798. s/Joel Harris. Wits Robert Rodes, John Miller, Will. Kerby, Robert Miller.... At Court of Quarter session held for Madison Co on 5 Feb 1799, this Power of Atorney was proved to be the act and deed of Joel Harris by oath of John Miller, Robert Rodes, William Kearby witnesses thereto and ordered recorded.... [end of her message] My added comments: Coincidentally, I picked up yesterday an unfiled photocopy of pages of a book [title below] about the Dabney Family and some Albemarle County VA records. The second paragraph is a longish transcription of the will of James Harris of Albemarle Co.,VA dated 1792. Joel Harris is one of James's sons. James Harris of Albemarle Co. names his wife Mary Harris. Mary, as far as the research of many of us is concerned is the daughter of Robert Harris, surveyor of Louisa Co. and a sometime resident of Albemarle Co. Thus Mary Harris, the mother of Joel, is a sister of Christopher Harris, the elder, of early Madison Co., KY. According to the will of James Harris, these are his children. Anna Haden Granddaughter Lucy Dabney [apparently her mother, who must be a Harris, is deceased] Thomas Harris Joel Harris Mourning Maupin Sarah Harris [later the abstract shows her surname as Harrison--and this is in italics] James Harris Susanna Burnley Nathan Harris Where can one find this abstracted [not a transcription of the original]? You can find them in one of the volumes of Valentine, Edward Pleasants The Edward Pleasants Valentine papers: abstracts of records in the local and general archives of Virginia relating to the families of Allen, Bacon, Bal lard, Batchelder, Blouet, Brassieur (Brashear), Cary, Crenshaw, Dabney, Exum, Ferris, Fontaine, Gray, Hardy, Isham (Henrico County), Jordan, Langston, Lyddall, Mann, Mosby, Palmer, Passteur, Pleasants, Povall, Randolph,Satterwhite, Scott, Smith (the family of Francis Smith of Hanover County), Valentine, Waddy, Watts, Winston, Womack, Woodson. Baltimore: Genealogical Pub. Co., 1979. 2784 pgs. If you have access through your local library or your State Library to the online genealogical database called HeritageQuest, you will find this hefty work. I have copied and pasted from the listing which my public Library has, but the formatting may be quite confused--different computer language, it seems. E.W.Wallace According to my notes, Robert Rodes, was the son of John Rodes whose wife was Sarah Harris, one of the daughters of Major Robert Harris of Louisa Co., VA. Here are some of my notes: Albemarle Co. DB 2-67 verifies that by 1758 John Rodes was married to the daughter of Robert Harris. Harris deeded slaves to John Rodes "me thereunto moving but more especially for the natural love and affection which I have and bear unto my son in Law John Rodes....give grant bargain sell unto the said John Rodes & his heirs the following Negroes [two slaves, who are named]. 26 Aug 1758 /s/ Robert Harris. Wits: Matthew Harris, David Lewis, Joel Terril, Andrew Wallace." (Adapted from Ruth and Sam Sparacio, DEED ABSTRACTS OF ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VIRGINIA, DEED BOOK 2, 9 FEBRUARY 1758-12 MARCH 1761 [McLean, VA: Ruth & Sam Sparacio, 1988] p. 20) Question: What is the identity of Matthew Harris? **************Make your life easier with all your friends, email, and favorite sites in one place.
