    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] reply also to del re william harris/ charles rice goochland co, va, etc
    2. belva cauthen
    3. del   my brother david harris did the dna test for us but i am the one who has researched our harris line/ family for about 30 years now.   our harris dna says that we are a match with harris dna group 8, who are said to trace back to our captain thomas harris 1611 of jamestown.   this actually agreed with my own research but my research says that we trace back to our captain thomas harris via william harris/ judith hudson of lunenburg/ mecklenburg co, va and that he was the william harris, son of our william harris/ mary giles (?),  son of our major william harris, son of our captain thomas harris.   however, once i had decided for us to participate in the harris dna project, which is also about the same time i came on line, i learned that there were others who thought that their william harris was the son of our william harris/ mary giles.   again, it has been said/ thought that the william harris of louisa/ goochland cos, va was the son, william of our william harris/ mary giles, but, again, i can see no connections re my william harris, sr/ frances goode there in lunenburg co, va with this william harris of goochland co, va, etc.   instead, as i have talked a lot about on harris hunters, again, because of this controversy, my connections are there in lunenburg/ mecklenburg co, va with william harris/ judith hudson, who were also involved there with my goode family; the cargills, etc, and other of these same, related and associated families also on into laurens co, sc.   i cannot explain all of this confusion and controversy except that there are things that have been written in the past, which may or may not have been accurate and, in  fact, this is one of the things, to me, we need to do is to try and figure out whether what has been written in the past is or is not accurate and can be confirmed.   i cannot say whether our william harris/ mary giles (?) had more than one wife, mary, but i can agree with carol on these points:   that it makes no sense that our william harris/ mary giles (?), who was the son of our major william harris and grandson of our captain thomas harris would have been a person of no rank and consequence there in new kent/ hanover cos, va.   when malcolm harris wrote all of these things about who he called captain william harris/ temperance overton and said he was the same as "mr" william harris, etc, he believed that your william harris/ temperance overton traced back to our captain thomas harris of jamestown but he does not.   i also believe, like carol, that it was our william harris and his brother, edward harris, who were the surveyors early there in new kent co, va, having learned this from the ligon family and that it was likely, our william harris/ mary, who, along with george alvis, who was elected vestryman.   again, it was george alvis, who re-married alice, widow of our major william harris and mother of our william harris/ mary giles (?) and his brother, edward harris.   in fact, one of the things i am thinking is that our william harris/ mary and his brother, edward harris, also, wife, mary, per these new kent co, va deeds, were born before  ca 1672 and ca 1674, which has been stated as the dates of when they were born.   so, where do these dates come from exactly and/ or is there an actual basis for them?  all i know is that they were born before our major william harris died there in 1678 in henrico co, va.   again, mary harris ligon, wife of thomas ligon of henrico co, va, was the sister of our major william harris.   i also agree with carol that these connections are really involved and complicated and  does seem in many ways that we are looking at different parts of the same tree but, again, i do not know what the answers are and/ or how we arrive at conclusions.   for now,  all i know is we need to keep trying to learn more and to keep trying to figure this out, etc.   our dna is totally accurate and confirms who we are but it, of course, does not tell us exactly how we get there and also, as we  keep saying, it goes hand in hand with a clear and accurate paper trail.    again, i can also only say i know what my own research has shown and indicated to me.    again, my research definitely indicates/ shows that my william harris, sr/ frances goode there in lunenburg co, va by 1746, and who was the father of my william harris, jr, who died in 1799 in laurens co, sc, was the son of william harris/ judith hudson, who was also in brunswick/ lunenburg co, va by 1743 and who died in 1778 in mecklenburg co, va.   again, what also confirms this is this 1750 dodson survey for william harris, sr and jr for this land on wynn creek, which became a patent to my william harris, sr/ frances goode in 1758, which he sold in several tracts, per halifax co, va deeds, to john camp, who, in fact, was also involved with my william harris, sr/ frances goode there in lunenburg co, va.   again, this wynn creek land fell into halifax co, va and it was my william harris, sr/ frances goode; william harris/ judith hudson; my mackerness goode, sr; peter hudson, sr, etc, who were all in cornelius cargill's district in 1749 and it is cornelius cargill's district which became halifax co, va.   so, the only william harrises i know that this survey would have applied to, and who were in this lunenburg/ halifax co, va area in 1750, were my william harris, sr/ frances goode and william harris/ judith hudson and, in this case, it was my william harris, sr/ frances goode, who was the " william harris, jr," per this  1750 survey, and who, again, obtained this land as a patent in 1758.    i really hope in our working together we can, as i say, continue to learn more and that we can hopefully figure this out re our harris lines and families.    it is obviously important that we keep trying to get this right not just for those of us who are interested and involved in this now but for all of those who come after us.   thanks also for your own interest.   belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8-------26910

    2. DEL HIESTAND
    3. Yes it is a mess and I'm wanting to get it straight too. After re-looking at William Deyo's work, what you have posted and the Depriest journal, I'm more convinced that my Harris line is the DNA group 6 not descending from Capt. Thomas Harris of Jamestowne. Although the families may have had a lot contact with each other. I'll keep researching and reading your posts!
