    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Harris in US Census 1800 for Louisa Co.,VA
    2. Schomakers
    3. A transcription of the Louisa Co., VA, Federal Census of 1800 is published in Louisa County Historical Magazine, Vol. 4, No. 1, June 1972, pp.21-49: "The Manuscript Return of the Census of 1800", by Ransom B. True. As far as I know, it has not been published anywhere else. The census was taken as of Monday, August 4, 1800. The manuscript was alphabetized by first letter of the surname. Here is an extract of the Harris entries: 1800 US Census, Louisa Co., Virginia Key: Name; Free White Males: <10, 10-16, 16-26, 26-45, >45; Free White Females: <10, 10-16, 16-26, 26-45, >45; Other free persons; Slaves. ...Robert Harris 12010 31110 0 10 ...Nelson Harriss 20010 40010 0 12 ...William Harris, HC 01011 00001 0 17 Moses Harris 21010 11010 0 3 ...Nathaniel Harris 40010 11010 0 2 ...Fanmy Harris 12100 10001 0 6 ...Samuel Harris 10010 20010 0 6 Overton Harris 21010 30010 0 6 ...Job Harris 01110 01010 0 1 Nathan Harris 11201 01311 0 6 ...Frederick Harris 00001 00000 0 7 ...Damon Harris 30011 00010 0 0 ...Benjamin Harris 20110 10100 0 3 ...Wingfield Harris, Over. for Mrs. Darracott 00100 20100 0 17 ...Patrick Harris 20001 02110 0 0 ...Henry Harris 21010 20010 0 4 Richard Harris 00010 00100 0 3 ...Ester Harris 00000 00001 0 2 Micajah Harris 00301 00100 0 3 ...Cyrus Harris 01010 12110 0 0 Here is the same list, with my best guess about identities and relationships in brackets [ ] : ...Robert Harris 12010 31110 0 10 [born 1763/4, son of Benjamin d.1765; brother of Overton and Benjamin and nephew of Frederick also on this list; m.1784 widow Mary Davis] ...Nelson Harriss 20010 40010 0 12 [born 1758, died 1837 Louisa Co., son of Overton and Ann (Nelson) Harris of Cedar Hill, Hanover Co.,VA; m.1789 Mary Pryor; He is said to be grandson or great-grandson of William and Temperance (Overton) Harris.] ...William Harris, HC 01011 00001 0 17 [HC=Hickory Creek] [born bef.1737, died 1813 Louisa Co., m1.bef.1758 Mary Hudson, m2.Elizabeth?] Moses Harris 21010 11010 0 3 [born bef.1767, m.abt.1785 Judith; probably son of William Harris HC] ...Nathaniel Harris 40010 11010 0 2 [born 1762, Rev War vet, died 1854; m.1788 Martha Byers; by 1810 has left Louisa Co. for Smyth Co., VA.; descendent DNA kit #66623 in Harris DNA Group 2] ...Fanmy Harris 12100 10001 0 6 [I think this may be widow Mezzapina (Walton) Harris, who was sometimes referred to as 'Peeny', which might be mistranscribed here. In 1799 her husband Robert Harris Sr (brother of Frederick Harris) died in Louisa Co. and she was made guardian of three sons and a dau, which matches with the under- age-16 children counted here. There doesn't seem to be any other widow with that combination on this Louisa Co. census.] ...Samuel Harris 10010 20010 0 6 [born 1755-1774, m.1794 Rhoda Davis; possibly son of Jerusha (Davis) and Edward Harris d.c.1796; Next to him is Overton Harris, whose brother Robert was guardian to Edward's other children, perhaps because of the Davis connection rather than the Harris connection?] Overton Harris 21010 30010 0 6 [born 1762, Rev War vet, died 1834; m.1789 Jemima Harris his cousin dau of Frederick; He is brother of Robert and Benjamin also on this list. He moves his family to Todd Co.,KY, in Oct 1819] ...Job Harris 01110 01010 0 1 [born 1755-75, died 1809 Louisa Co., possibly a younger brother or son of Nathan?] Nathan Harris 11201 01311 0 6 [born bef. 1755, died 1829 Louisa Co.; m.Sarah Knight; descendent kit #47884 in Harris DNA Group 2; related to Nathaniel also on this list] ...Frederick Harris 00001 00000 0 7 [born bef.1743, died 1801, father of Richard on this list; also father of Charles, George H., Frederick O., not married by 1800 - but where are they?] ...Damon Harris 30011 00010 0 0 [born bef. 1770, m.1790 Susannah Woolems; He is brother of Patrick and son of Stephen Harris d.1770 Hanover Co.; Stephen Harris is believed to be one of the seven sons of Thomas Harris (some say William) of Wales, about whose family a great-grandson Gideon Harris provided an account in 1829. DNA submitted by this family is in Harris DNA Group 8, though I am not aware of any kits submitted by descendants of this Stephen Harris.] ...Benjamin Harris 20110 10100 0 3 [born 1765, died 1846 Louisa Co.; m.1790 Sarah Overstreet. He is brother of Robert and Overton also on this list.] ...Wingfield Harris, Over. for Mrs. Darracott 00100 20100 0 17 [born 1774, m.1797 Sarah Attkisson, who may have been his stepsister. He is found in Hanover Co. in later censuses.] ...Patrick Harris 20001 02110 0 0 [brother of Damon and son of Stephen Harris d.1770 Hanover Co.] ...Henry Harris 21010 20010 0 4 [said to be from Caroline Co.; may be cousin of Cyrus Harris also on list. Cyrus' sister Juliana (Harris) Talley sold Aspen Hill on N. Moved his family to Kentucky about 1819.] ...Ester Harris 00000 00001 0 2 Micajah Harris 00301 00100 0 3 [possibly siblings of Wm d.1799, children of John Harris d.1774 of Great Rocky Creek in NE Louisa Co.] ...Cyrus Harris 01010 12110 0 0 [born 1760, Rev War vet, m.1783 Elizabeth Bond; may be cousin of Henry Harris also on list] (Sources include "Marriages of Louisa Co. Va 1766-1815" by K. B. Williams, the Douglas Register, "Old Home Places of Louisa County" by C. A. Chisholm and E. G. Lillie, "A History of Louisa County, Virginia"' by M. H. Harris, the deed and probate records abstracted by Janet Abercrombie at www.trevilians.com, Glenn Gohr's Harris DNA Results page http://www.harrisdna.org/results.html and tax lists from Louisa Co. and Hanover Co.) I think there are at least five distinct Harris families represented here! However, as far as I know, only descendents of Nathan and Nathaniel have submitted DNA kits, both testing into Harris Group 2. Hope this helps, Christine Schomaker
