    1. Re: [HARRIS-HUNTERS] [VAALBEMA] [changed subj - W. H. Miller Histor& Genealogies..
    2. Thank you for reminding us that the thick book--but flawed genealgieis--done by William Harris Miller of Madison Co., KY long ago--is on the internet. You say it is on Ancestry.com, about which some subscribers complain about the search engine and its clunkiness!! I thought the book was on HeritageQuest, but I had trouble remembering the LONG title of the book I have copied the HQ catalog item, and I found it by choosing from your posting the family with the most unusual name--Maupin. Up came the catalog entry. I will paste it at bottom because the formatting in the catalog is frequently lost in rootsweb. Caution: Do check out every statement which Miller gives. Too bad he did not go to the courthouse in Richmond, Kentucky and check some of the facts. The facts about the Oldham family, of which I am a descendant, is particularly flawed. Lately, I had some correspondence with a person who pointed out some flawed information about one of the marriages of a Harris male. She had good circumstantial evidence to refute the conclusion Miller had made. Nowadays, if we cannot do the research in the films or books of Madison Co., many of us could employ a genealogist who lives near the Family History Library in Salt Lake City to check the filmed records of the counties in which these folks lived--in particular, Madison co., KY. Virginia counties are a little harder to research if some of the records have been destroyed. I generally check the Family History Library catalog and do a PLACE search in the catalog to determine 1) when a county was formed and 2)whether any records have been destroyed. For Virginia, not many marriage records preceding the American Revolution still exist. These, in order to be legitimate marriages, had to take place under the auspices of the Anglican Church--which was THE OFFICIAL church of Virginia. Hope this translates from the HeritageQuest catalog entry: Miller, William Harris, History and genealogies of the families of Miller, Woods, Harris, Wallace, Maupin, Oldham, Kavanaugh, and Brown (illustrated) with interspersions of notes of the families of Dabney, Reid, Martin, Broaddus, Gentry, Jarman, Jameson, Ballard, Mullins, Michie, Moberley, Covington, Browning, Duncan, Yancey and others. Richmond KY: Miller, 1907, 859 pgs. HeritageQuest can be found at some public libraries, and some correspondents some State Libraries, such as Texas and North Carolina, also have HeritageQuest. Do some telephoning around. You may have to pay a fee to a nearby public library to obtain a valid library card, but it will be worth it to do some research in your pajamas!!!
