My 23 June 1748 Amelia land record for my Thomas Harris of St. Martin's Hanover Co. purchasing Amelia land from Robert Harris of St. Martin's Hanover Co....wit: Stephen Harris, George Harris, Harrison Deprieart (most likely Harrison Harris noted in the next consecutive deed & "of St. Martin's Hanover Co.) So, we have between 23 May 1748 & 23 June 1748 records involving Robert, Thomas, Stephen, George & Harrison Harris...and now also a William Harris of St. Martin's Hanover Co. noted in the 23 May 1748 Charles Barret deed .... (6 Harris men living in St. Martin's Hanover Co.)....one month's difference in time. Charles Barrett is in the early records of Louisa Co. with Robert Harris, the surveyor. The Robert Harris who sold the 23 June 1748 Amelia land to my Thomas Harris "signed" his name to that indenture....same man in 1771 selling this same land to Stephen Davis "marked" his name....I have all 3 records (from original) that involve this Amelia (Falling Cr.) land...and the Robert in all these cases 1748, 1763, 1771 was noted living in St. Martin's Hanover Co....and he was the "only" Robert Harris who had land in Hanover Co. from 1763 to 1800 (Hanover Co. Tax records)...after 1800, his name no longer is on the tax list. So, when we have documents that show a man signing his name in 1748 & marking it in 1771, we have reason to question the theory of illiteracy on some of these records. Interesting his marked "R" in his 1771 P.E. Co. deed is made very nicely as tho that person could write. Louisa Co.
