He then married Mary (maiden name unknown) about 1690. Robert was a French Huguenot and immigrated to Virginia before 1689. The earliest mention of him in Virginia is found in the S. Peter's Parish Vestry Book when the land of Robert DePresst was among the property to be processed. Based on the date of immigration, he was probably among the group of Huguenots sent to the New World by the British government to quiet unrest in England over the Huguenots who had arrived from France taking prime English jobs. The location of his birth is unknown, but he probably came from the south of France where several villages were designated "free cities" for Protestant worship by the Edit of Nantes. Robert DePriest most likely left France for England in 1685 when the Edict of Nantes was revoked and violence broke out against the Huguenots. Robert DePriest settled in New Kent Co., VA and by 1704 he owned 354 acres of land (VA 1704 Quit Rent Rolls for New Kent Co.) The early records of the DePriest family are contained in the St. Peter's Parish records. When St. James' Parish was formed from St. Peter's Parish, Robert Depriest's land fell into the new parish. Later his land would fall into the newly created Hanover County. At the time of his death, the DePriests lived on or near the Pamunkey River, near the present day boundaries of Hanover, New Kent and King William Counties. Robert DePriest is one of approximately 450 people whose origins have been proved to the standards of National Huguenot Society and all of his descendants are eligible for membership in the Society.
