    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Joel Harris of Early Madison Co., KY but Also of Albemarle Co., VA
    2. Eleanor Homewood is asking for some identification of one Joel Harris of Madison Co., KY. I have collected some notes on Joel Harris, localities specified below, but I do not know who his parents are/were. So--we need your help. (Eleanor- the dates in your e-mail must be typos. I believe the dates should be the early 1800s. Kentucky until late in the 1790s was a *dark and bloody ground*. {lots of battles with our Native American cousins) Submitted by E.W.Wallace Here are some notes: JOEL HARRIS of Albemarle Co., VA and perhaps of Madison Co., KY We do not know the identity of Joel Harris, but his name appears in the deeds books of Madison Co. and also in the early court records of the same county. He apparently lived in Madison Co. KY at times. We cannot identify him as being one of the family of Christopher Harris the elder. At least, he was not named in the Madison Co. will of Christopher Harris ca 1796-98. Madison Co. COB B, 2 August 1796: On the motion of Higgason Grubbs it is ordered that it be certified to the auditor of publick accounts that proof was made to the court that five hundred acres of land given in the name of Joel Harris was also given in by James Berry. (Jackie Couture, MADISON COUNTY, KENTUCKY, COURT ORDER BOOK B, 1791-1801 [Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, Inc., 2000], p. 156.) A later deed identifies Joel Harris as being of Albemarle Co., VA. Madison Co. DB D-561-562: Know all men by these presents that I Joel Harris of the County of Albemarle & State of Virginia do by these presents make and constitute John Harris, Daniel Maupin, James Berry all of the county of Madison and State of Kentucky my lawful attorneys [sic] in my name to demand recover and receive by all lawful means whatsoever all such debts & business of any kind such as securing & dividing & releasing of land & receiving paying & demanding doing all business that may ... before them the above named John Harris Daniel Maupin and James Berry in the state of Kentucky. acknd 6 day Dec 1799 /s/ Joel Harris Witnesses: Robert Rodes, John Miller, Will Kerley, Robert Miller Many of these persons are identified with the extended family of Christopher Harris the elder, and therefore it is assumed that Joel Harris is a close relative of the family. John Harris, son of Christopher Harris, was married to Margaret Maupin. Robert Rodes may have been related to John Rodes who was married to Sarah Harris, a sister of Christopher Harris. John Berry, perhaps related to James Berry mentioned in the deed, was married to Elizabeth Harris, and Robert Harris gave consent to her marriage on 12 Apr 1797, Madison Co., but the relationship of Robert Harris to Elizabeth is unknown. Confession: Being curious about Joel Harris, I did a google.com search just now for Joel Harris + Madison County, Kentucky [lower case OK], and I have *lifted* the paragraph at the end of this e-mail from a long list [with a LOT of notes] of Harrises of Madison Co., KY, many of whom MUST have been born in or near Albemarle Co., VA. Another confession: I do not know to what source the reference at the end of the paragraph refers. I believe the John Harris to whom Joel grants power of attorney is a son of Christopher, probably by his second wife, Agnes McCord. After Agnes was widowed, she granted power of attorney to John Harris to take care of estate matters in Albemarle Co., VA. To muddy the waters further: Higgason Grubbs was of or near Albemarle Co., VA, but apparently was a land agent, as his name--and that of his wife Lucy [Harris] appears many times in the grantor index of Madison Co., deeds. An e-mail correspondent wrote this in 2001: Higgason Grubbs married Robert Harris's cousin Lucy Harris. Lucy was a daughter of James and Mary Harris. This is the James Harris who has been the subject of the many messages lately about his relationship (son-in-law?) to Robert Harris & Mourning Glen(n) of Albemarle Co., VA. [end of msg] Those interested in Harrises of early Madison Co., KY are urged to do a similar google.com search as I did.. The URL is rather long, and google.com is a quicker way to find these *other* Harrises. EWW Dec. 6, 1798. Joel Harris, of Albemarle County, Va., executed a power of attorney to John Harris, Daniel Maupin and James Berry to act for him and convey lands etc. Nov. 17, 1807, the said Joel Harris conveyed to Daniel Maupin an undivided moiety of 1000 acres on waters of Cow Creek and Indian Creek, emptying into the Salt Spring Fork of Licking granted to Joel Harris June 26, 1799, witnesses, John Patrick, John Harris and William Dulaney, and other conveyances as follows: 200 acres to Joseph Holdman, 200 acres to Richard Johnson in the forks of Tates Creek, and 200 acres to John Denham, adjoining above. April 10, 1817, Daniel Maupin attorney in fact for Joel Harris of Albermarle conveyed to Samuel Robinson 288 1/2 acres on Muddy Creek. (See Chap. 111, Sec. IV.) **************Get the Moviefone Toolbar.
