this info appears to answer part of my question showing that this elk creek and horsepen swamp were the same area.   actually, the patent for william harris, jr in 1725 says that it was on overton fork of elk creek but james overton in 1723 had a patent on the south fork of elk creek adjacent john ragland.   again, this has also said to have been captain william harris/ temperance overton's son, william harris, jr, who obtained this patent:   william harris, junr, of hanover co, va patents 1500 acres in same bounded by land of mrs arnold, george woodroof, the corner being on overton fork of elk creek, march 24, 1725.   also, james overton of hanover co, va patents 400 acres in same on the south fork of elk creek on john raglin's line, 1723.   this info below certainly appears to refer to the same george woodroof/ woodruff and does also show that this elk creek area would have been the same as this horsepen swamp area.   Book A, p. 361-363. 16 Oct 1749  Dabney Pettus of Louisa Co., Planter, and Elizabeth, his wife, to Joseph Bickley of Louisa Co., Gent . £110-1s-3d currt. money.  250 acres; given sd.
