    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Dabney Papers at Library of Virginia
    2. Please forward this information to others whom you think may be interested in learning more about Virginia ancestors. This refers particularly to Dabney Papers. (One lecturer of North Carolina states that most early North Carolinians came from Virginia because entry from the Atlantic was too dangerous. Later North Carollians came from everywhere!!! Including some of my Moravian folk from New York, Pennsylvania, and probably Maryland to Western North Carolina And, of course, the Boones came from Pennsylvania;. and Scotsmen to Cape Fear country, near Wilmington. Dabneys of colonial Hanover Co. VA and adjacent counties married into the colonial Harris family of the Pamunkey area of Hanover Co., and later of Louisa and Albemarle Co., VA and still later, some members in Madison Co., KY. A friend in Virginia told me in part how to navigate parts of the LVA website--other than looking at the Land Patents and Grants and the recently completed Chancery records. On the opening screen of the LVA website at _www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave_ (http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave) Remove punctuation fore and aft which I am told AOL adds to such a link. on the left side of the screen, near the bottom, is a link called Site Index. Click on that link. There is an alphabetical index, mostly of proper surnames names. Go down to the D list for Dabney, of course. (Gee, I had better check the H for Harris--and for many other Virginia surnames which I research--some in counties where large chunks of records are missing.) As an added note about Virginia research. Incidentally, if you ever have the opportunity to research in Richmond, VA, take a taxi to the Virginia Historical Society, out near the art museum on Broad St. This is a private institution, and, if you are NOT a member, you have to pay a daily fee. Besides, the photocopying is rather costly, but if you find a gem, it's worth it to pay the fee. I am told that many county records which may have been tossed out by county clerks have been donated to the VHS. The card catalog, when I was there a number of years, takes a whole day or more to examine. There is much cross-indexing. No doubt, there is something there to entice the true genealogist. This is a time-eating adventure!!! Better count on several days! I found VHS had large boxes, nay, cartloads, of records of Virginia genealogists such as Judge Leon Bazile, George Harrison King [there is another name in there somewhere]!! My English friend, whomn I met on the steps while we were waiting for the opening,k was researching for more information about John Rolfe [husband of Pocahontas [sp?]. She has named her dog Rolfe. Anyway, you may find some indexing of the Dabney file at LVA of interest to you, if you are descended from that family. Many colonial families are linked to the Dabney family--Winston, for one. E.W.Wallace desc. of Christopher Harris whose first wife was Mary Dabney but whose second wife was Agnes McCord **************Life should be easier. So should your homepage. Try the NEW AOL.com.
