This is just to advise that there was a Sherwood Harris in Granville Co., NC who wrote his will 15 June 1763. The will was proved August Court 1763, Granville Co. NC. In he will he named these persons [not in the order in the wil] Wife - Jane - one white horse and furrniture Sherwood Harris - son - two parcels of land; a horse plus bridle and saddle Mary Hix - dau - land [her husband Absolom Hix] Absolom Hix - son-in-law "all sums of money due from him to me Sarah Harris - dau - horse and bed & furniture John Harris - son - all my waring clothes and rifle gun Jemima White - 5 shillings Sterling money of England Mercy White - granddaughter - 20 pds. when she attans the age of 18 years or marries Joshua Hays - [relationship not given] - land upon paying executors 60 pds. Will lists youngest children; Anne, Sherwood & Elizabeth Harris Executors My loving wife Jane Harris and my loving brother Robert Harris In the source cited below, there is an abstract of the will of Absolom Hiks [sic] dated 8 Feb 1770. Whole estate is to go to his wife as long as she remains in widowhood. Should be marry a second husband, she to have equal part as one of the rest of the children being in life at the time of the marriage. Executors: wife, Jecob Waddall, Sheerat Herris,\Wit: Sherwood Harris, Jacob (X) Waddell April court 1770 proved by oath of Jacob Waddall. Mary Hix the Executrix qualified as such.. If one reads the early deed indexes of Madison Co., KY [where Boonesborough is located], one will find listed under the H's one Sherwood Harris. A number of people from Granville Co., NC are found in early deeds of Madison Co., KY. There are several references to one Sherwood Harris in the Madison County, Kentucky Court Order Books A and B. Book A is for the years 1787-1791. My comment: Based on the excerpt from Madison Co. COB A, I deduce that Sherwood Harris is the younger man named in the will of his father, sketched out above. Why? Because the person granting the power of attorney is from Granville Co., NC and a close associate of Col. Richard Henderson, whose dream was Boonesborough, which was to be the 14th colony of what was not yet United States of America!!! The Revolution intervened and authorities in both North Carolina and in Virginia objected!!! Oh, yes, the man Searcy who proved the power of attorney was the son, I suspect, of Bartlett Searcy, formerly of Granville Co., NC. His widow Lucy and family remained in Madison Co., KY. Many of the children were underage. Here is the excerpt concerning Sherwood Harris [Note Kentucky did not become a state until 1792. In 1788 it was still part of Virginia.] At a court held for Madison County on Tuesday the 26th day of February 1788. A power of attorney from Len Henly Bullock to Sherwood Harris was proved by the oaths of Charles Searcy and is ordered to be recorded. If persons are interested in the activities of Sherwood Harris in Madison Co., KY, I highly recommend you order through your local LDS family history center the filmed deed indexes - both grantor and grantee - for Madison Co. Sherwood Harris is NOT my ancestor and I do not follow him, but when I am looking for deeds for Harris family members in the Deed indexes mentioned above, I cannot help but note his appearance.
