Sandy Hart has helped us--or confused us-- a good deal by extracting references to Harris males from the Road Orders prepared by the Viriginia Board of Transportation. One of these extracts for NEW KENT Co. reads as follows: Nov. 30, 1763, N.S., no original pagination visible [new pagination p. 308; Chamberlayne pp. 416-417] [Boundaries of Processioning Precinct No. 6] . . . Lands of James Cawthon, James Crenshaw, John Spraddling, Nicholas Gentry, Samuel Pryor, W;m Berry?s Orphans, William Cawthon, James Philips, William Harris, and that James Mitchell and William Morrice do see the said processioning performed, and return the proceedings according to Law Pursuant to the Above Order, M,r Mitchel being Absent, the Subscriber hath Seen the Lands above mention?d, procession?d, betwixt Beever Creek, and the River, to Ash Cake Road; which ncludes Other Lands, not Mentioned in the Order William Morris My comments - help me with analysis, if you wish, as this is NOT documentation but *testing an hypothesis* Hanover Co. was formed from New Kent Co. in 1721, but most records were destroyed by fire in 1865. A few remainng records have been transcribed and published by Mrs. Rosalie Edith Davis. Some of these surnames, including Harris, appear in the court records 1733-1735. These are not necessarily the persons listed above, but they may be their descendants. It has been fairly well established that Major Robert Harris, later surveyor of Louisa Co., VA, had roots in Hanover Co. Help me compare these surnames with those above: These are the names of persons who appear in the court records of Hanover Co. 1733-1735 Cawthorn, Richard and Thomas Crenshaw, David, John and Thomas Spradling (Spradlin), Andrew, John [refers to admin bond and appraisement of estate] Mary [probably widow of John as she appears on same page] Gentry (Gentrey) James, Nicholas, Samuel Pryor, Benja., John, Samuel Philips, James, Katherine, Richard, Dr. William [Mrs. Davis: see Filips, Fillops] Filips, James Fillops (Filiph) George Mitchell Morrice or Morris Berry George, Thomas HARRIS [many]: David Edward Elizabeth [my note: wife of James] George J. James John John Jr. Mourning [wife of Robert] Richard [many references] Robert [many references] Robert, Jr. Sarah Stephen Thomas William [many references] I suspect Boundaries of Processioning Precinct No. 6 in New Kent Co. later became part of Hanover Co.
