    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] reply again to carol re wilminton harris, etc, # 2
    2.  again, the info on the sherwood harrises seems to be very confused and confusing.   as i posted recently, dolores rutherford, per her interest in her page family, has been very interested in sherwood harris/ hannah page, who she says were married in 1761 in goochland co, va.    again, she said that there were no deeds for this sherwood harris/ hannah page there in goochland co, va and that he also did not appear on any of the tithe lists there in goochland co, va.   she also said that there was an older sherwood harris, who was there in goochland co, va and who was the same sherwood harris, who moved to and died in granville co, nc in 1763.   this is shown/ indicated to have been the sherwood harris, who married jane hudspeth.   again, if you look at this 1752 goochland co, va tithe list, it shows that  this older sherwood harris and wilminton harris were in james holman's district, whereas william harris and this gilliam harris, indicated to have been his son, and this john cawthon, stated to have married agnes harris, daughter of this william harris,  were all in thomas stark's district.   it is also sherwood harris/ hannah page, who is indicated to have also been the son of this william harris/ mary of goochland co, va per deeds and info i posted previously.   again, this is info from this rootsweb site re john page, sr and his daughter, hannah page, who married the younger sherwood harris, who again, is indicated to have been the son of this william harris of goochland co, va and a brother of this gillum/ gilliam harris.   again, the info states that this sherwood harris did not marry hannah page until 1761 there  in goochland co, va.   what this info does show is that sherwood harris/ hannah page did witness/ prove a deed re william page selling land back to his father, john page, sr.   however, as dolores rutherford stated, this deed or proof of this deed was not in the goochland co, va deed books but rather in the gouchland co, va court order book.   again, other info shows/ states that this william harris/ mary, like the page family, lived in this licking hole creek area and were also involved with this same thomas stark.   From: < [email protected]> Subject: Re: [PAGE] John PAGE/Hannah c. 1705-1710/1800 Date: Sat, 12 Feb 2000 07:32:45 EST n a message dated 2/8/00 6:25:32 PM, [email protected] writes: << Regarding the roll call. The Reverend Wayne Dean Sr. >> Wayne, you may already have the following info, which was posted by Dolores Rutherford. I have nothing else on this family. Good luck Linda Date: Sunday, April 26, 1998 10:08:34 PM From: [email protected] Subj: [PAGE-L] PAGE....Part 5 To: [email protected] PAGE - Part 5 J - JOHN PAGE, Sr. >From the ages and marriage dates of his children, it appears that John, Sr. was probably born ca. 1705-1710. When he purchased his first land in Goochland Co. in 1742, just four months after Robert PAGE (R) purchased his, the record gave John's residence as King & Queen Co.. Robert PAGE (R) was a witness to this deed as well as to another deed to John dated two years later. Both tracts of land lay on branches of Lickinghole Creek. In the 10-15 years before John and Robert first appeared here, many famiies from Middlesex Co., VA had migrated to Goochland Co.. It is interesting to note that some of these families acted as witnesses to documents involving the PAGE men in Goochland Co. and, in turn, the PAGEs witnessed theirs. Middlesex Co. borders King & Queen Co. on the north. Familiar names in the Middlesex Co. records that later appear in Goochland Co. are: CHOWNING, DANIELS, GRESHAM, JOHNSON, MOSELEY, PACE, SMITH, THURSTON, TUGGLE (Tugwell), WILBURN, and WILLIAMS, to name just a few. Middlesex Co. was also where an early HEATH family lived. Axol's Swamp was in the part of King & Queen Co. closest to Middlesex Co.. In 1750, John sold his first land (100 acres) to Richard WILBURN, who, as you may remember, was the father of the two WILBURN boys bound out to Robert PAGE after Richard's death about 1759. John purchased two other tracts of land in this county, one of 270 acres in 1751 and another of 100 acres in 1758. In 1761, he made gift deeds of land to his sons, John and William. John received the 100 acres purchased in 1758 and William received the 150 acres purchased in 1744. John, Sr. retained the 270 acres. Son, John, had to mortgage his 100 acres a couple of times and it appears that he eventually lost it as no deed appears whereby he sold it. William evidently deeded his 150 acres back to his father in 1765. Although no record appears in the deed books for this transfer, the court order book shows that Thomas STARKE and Sherod HARRIS proved a deed from William PAGE to John PAGE. It had to be for this land because, in Sep 1767, John PAGE deeded it to Edward SMITH. In the same month, John sold the last of his land in this county (said to be 250 acres) to William BRITT. Because the original deed for this land said it 270 acres, perhaps the land was re-surveyed and found to contain less. He also sold the 150 acres that he had given and received back from his son, William, to Edward SMITH. John's wife, Hannah, released her dower rights to both parcels. Then, the family disappeared from Goochland Co. and later appeared in North Carolina records. During his stay in Goochland Co., John also served as "constable", was on juries, was an Ensign in the militia (1753) and served on the "road gang", both as a surveyor and as a worker. In the latter duty, he was not a convict. In those days, those who lived along or used the roads were charged with the building and upkeep of them. John and Hannah PAGE had the following children: J-1 William PAGE, b. ca. 1731-32. He md. Jean STEVENTON sometime before Dec 1755 when their first child was born. He was first listed with his father in the "Tithable Lists" of Goochland Co. in 1748 and in the deed records in 1765. He can be found later in Pitt Co., NC. J-2 John PAGE, b. ca. 1738-39. He md. Unity HARRIS ca. 1757 as their first child was born in Jun 1758 in Goochland Co.. He was first taxed in his father's household in 1755. John lost the 100 acres that his father gave him there and, after several court cases in which he was the defendant, he left VA and moved to Pitt Co., NC where he was granted and purchased quite a bit of land. J-3 Joseph PAGE, b. ca. 1736-37. He md. Elizabeth STEVENTON on 13 Apr 1758 in Goochland Co., VA (The Douglas Register). He appears in the "Tithable Lists" first in 1760 and last in 1767. In court cases dated 1763 and 1766, when Joseph was the defendant, John PAGE, Sr. gave security for him in both instances. Both cases were later dismissed. The last record of Joseph in Goochland Co. was dated Sep 1767. Joseph's wife, Elizabeth, was no doubt related to William's wife. Joseph also moved to Pitt Co., NC. Some questions remain as to where Joseph was living before his marriage. He was not listed with John, Sr. in the tax lists before his marriage in 1758 as one would expect. However, when his name did appear on these lists, it was in the same district and always next to the name of John, Sr.. J-4 Hannah PAGE, b. before 1743. She md. Sherwood HARRIS on 16 Dec 1761 in Goochland Co.. Sherwood may have been related to John's wife. When his name appears in the tax lists it is next to the name of John PAGE, Sr.. Sherwood ceases to be taxed by 1766. This may have been about the time that they moved to NC. Sherod and William HARRIS were co-defendants in a case of debt in Dec 1763. John PAGE and Joseph HODGES gave security for them. Sherod HARRIS was one of the witnesses to the deed from William PAGE to his father, John PAGE, Sr. in 1765. This deed was not recorded in the deed books, but was proved at court. Sherwood/Sherod and Hannah PAGE may have lived in some other NC county for a while before moving to Anson Co., NC. The courthouses in many NC counties were burned in the 1860's so records of this couple there are difficult to obtain. Another older Sherwood HARRIS also lived in Goochland Co. for a while, but later moved to Granville Co., NC where he died that county in 1763. Sherwood and Hannah had six children, including a daughter Hannah, evidently named for her mother and grandmother. This couple eventually went to Anson Co., NC. Hannah died sometime between 1774 and 1778. Sherwood is reported to have md. again twice and had a second family. His last wife's name was Elizabeth and she may have been the dau. of Sherwood's good friend, William Williams. WILLIAMS is another name that was in both Middlesex and Goochland Cos., VA. William WILLIAMS, in Goochland Co. by 1728 is my ancestor. I do not know if the WILLIAMS mentioned here as a friend of Sherwood HARRIS was related to the Goochland Co. bunch. Sherwood HARRIS died in Anson Co., NC in 1805. Some of the descendants went on to Alabama. Most of my information on the descendants of this couple was contributed by Wm. R. Taylor of Old Lyme, CT. to be continued:   belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8------26910
