It is with pride and pleasure that one can recall the life of a nineteenth century teacher who taught for a period of more than fifty years, extending through the seventieth of his life. Daniel Seaborn Harris was born on October 5, 1825, in Green County, Alabama, the son of Sherrod Harris II (1797-1869) and Winnie Wells White Harris (1801-1833). Both parents were of Scott-Irish descent. Sherrod Harris II was a native of North Carolina and a devout member of the Primitive Baptist Church, which he joined in 1832. While a youth, D.S. moved with his parents to a location near Colliersville, Tennessee, where his father built the first church in that area called the "Shiloh Baptist". This church stood until it was destroyed by a cyclone in 1840-43. Shortly after th e Chickasaw Indians migrated to Indian Territory, now Oklahoma, Sherrod Harri s II and his family moved to Marshall County, Mississippi. Here they acquired more than 6000 acres of land, and Sherrod II was listed as the second highest  land taxpayer in this county. Winnie Wells White Harris was the daughter of Dr. Samuel White of Union District, South Carolina. D.S. was the second child born to his parents, the first being Tillman Jefferson who was born in 1823. Two years younger than D.S. was Hudson Laben who was born in 1827. A sister, Parmelia (Townsend) was born in 1829, and finally Lucy Miram (Greenway) wa s born in 1832. Tragedy came early in the life of D.S.; for when he was eight years old and his sister Lucy Miriam was only an infant, their mother died. After the death of Winnie Wells White Harris, Sherrod Harris II married Rebecca Kirby of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. To the union were born eight children. These were Maben (1835-?), who took over his father's plantation when Sherrod II retired and moved to Memphis, Tennessee; Norwood (1840-1908/09); Caladonia, who died young; Elizabeth (Betty) (1835-?); John Sherrod (1841-1898); Madison (1842-1901); Mary Rebecca (1846-?); and Julius B. (1848-?). Life must have been interesting and exciting for members of the Sherrod Harris II family. D.S. grew up in a most unique situation. He was the second of twelve children whose ages ranged from three to twenty three years - - some were his own siblings while others were his half-brothers and sisters. One can well imagine the experiences they had on the big plantation in Marshall County, Missis sippi, where the spiritual life of each member was soundly stressed according to the Primitive Baptist faith. The theology of this church was strictly for those who believed in practicing daily the theory of "Begin with Thyself." They did not believe in missionary work. The holdings of this family must have been extensive; for in his will Sherrod II speaks of his "stock of horses, mules, cows, hogs, and all other stock together with my farming utensils,  wagons, buggies, and carriages." Their dwelling must have been quite adequate too. A recent visitor to their old home (1968) remarked: "The main structure is still standing, although crumbling and the roof has fallen in - but there is still enough to tell that it was an imposing home." Apparently the family lived quite well, for Sherrod II became a wealthy man (Long afterwards, D.S. listed his father's "fortune" to be more than $200,000.00) and provided well for his family. It is interesting to note that the spiritual convictions of Sherrod II increased; for in 1836 when his son D.S. was twenty years old, Sherrod II was ordained a minister of the Primitive Baptist Church. D.S. graduat ed from Transylvania Union in Lexington, Kentucky at the age of 16. It is recorded that he was so physically weakened by this endeavor that when he returned home on horseback his father's slaves Father: Sherrod II HARRIS b: 25 Jul 1797 in Union County, NC Mother: Winnie Wells WHITE b: 26 Apr 1801 Marriage 1 Mary Elizabeth WOFFORD b: 1830 Married: 27 Jan 1847 in Tippah Co, MS 1Children John S HARRIS b: 20 Dec 1847 Larkin L HARRIS b: 11 Jan 1850 Robert B HARRIS b: 27 Jun 1852 Daniel HARRIS b: 5 Jun 1854 Lucy Miriam (Lutie) HARRIS b: 5 Aug 1855 Infant Son HARRIS b: 26 Jun 1857 Winnie B HARRIS b: 13 Jul 1858 Benjaman Naud HARRIS b: 16 May 1860 Mary Elizabeth HARRIS b: 24 Dec 1862 Willie Douglas HARRIS b: 1 Jan 1866 in Mississippi Daniel Huger HARRIS b: 4 Jan 1870 Marriage 2 Alice HINSON b: Abt. 1843 in Milan, TN (Gibson Co) Married: 7 Feb 1878 in Hickory Plains, Arkansas 1 1 Note: [1469835 Burbridge.FTW] Roland Theopolis Cook died in the war between the states. His widow, Alice Hinson and Jerome Bonapart's slave from Gibson County took a herd of cattle along with the children to Texas. When the war was over, the slave deserted. Alice and the children started back to Jonesboro, Arkansas via Old Washington. Daniel Seaborn Harris was teaching high school at Hazen, Arkansas and posters were posted for a teacher. Alice applied and was hired. They later fell in l ove and married. He was a widower with several children. They raised their own families and even took in children and chartered schools of higher education in the area. This is the reason errors are made in listing Daniel Seaborn Harris as Professor Harris. Also note that Alice's last name was Henson on reports rather than Hinson.Children Alvin Virgil HARRIS b: 1 Jan 1879 in Center Hill, AR (White Co) Cora M HARRIS b: 22 Sep 1880 in Faulkner Co, AR Nina HARRIS b: 22 Aug 1882 in Arkansas Alice Seaborn HARRIS b: 16 Aug 1884 in Vilonia, AR belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8-------26910
