Dear Carol: Although I have studied early records of Goochland Co., VA, I did not recognize the Harrises there. I should go over my notes and books, but this is heavy housework day--and dinner needs preparation.. About Granville Co., NC, however--I have a good many books of early Granville Co., and I do NOT find a Wilmington [that's the way I think I have seen it spelled] in any of the indexes. Sherwood Harris, yes, in Granville Co.. I think I posted something the other day of an elder Sherwood Harris will, Gravnille Co. NC, in which he named his son Sherwood Harris, whom I seem to recall was a minor at the time of the will being written. When I study Madison Co., KY [Boonesborough is in that county], the name Sherwood Harris shows up a fair amount in the early deed indexes. I am not sure these Sherwood Harrises are linked, but since Transylvania/Boonesborough scheme was headed by Col. Richard Henderson of Granville Co., it seems likely Sherwood of Madison Co., KY is the same son of the elder Sherwood Harris. This does not mean they were not linked, but, as far as the abstracts of early Granville Co. are concerned, Wilmington does not show up in the indexes of sthe several books I have. I find relatives of some of my Granville Co. folks had land in Lunenburg, Charlotte, and counties adjoining North Carolina. A distant cousin pointed out that many of the same creeks flowed into North Carolina. (I hope you have an atlas which shows the watercourses which are in both states.) A DAR staff genealogist gave me some great tips some years ago: 1) Find out who the associates are -- such as you have with Hix, Holeman, etc., in Goochland Co. [part of it became Albemalre Co. and that part below the James River became Cumberland Co.] 2) Determine on what watercourse your *suspect* held land. Another professional genealogist says Virginia bridegrooms found their brides downstream!!! A lot of transportation was by watercourse--until decent roads were built. So gather up the neighbors on that same watercourse--swamp, run, creek, etc. Also, I have two recent books of Goochland Co. court order books--Bk No. 3 and Bk. No. 5. The first one is dated 1731-1735 and the second one 1741-1745. Although there are many references in the index to a John Harris, there is no Wilmington Harris of these time periods. From your notes, I see he showed up at a later date. Did he get a land patent? The Library of Virginia website which lists land patents should help you eliminate some folks!!! Harris surname in COB 3 - Goochland Co.1731-1735 David, Esther, John [many references], Thomas Harris in COB 5, Goochland Co., 1741-1745 Benjamin [many references], James, John, William If your people were in Lunenburg, you need to find out what other counties were formed from Lunenburg. I think [but I am not checking my atlas about county boundary changes in Virginia] these were progeny counties of Lunenburg: Charlotte, Halifax, and so on. (and then look across the state line!!!) If you can access HeritageQuest, look for books by Landon C. Bell who wrote of Lunenburg Co. - something like Sunlight on the Southside. I am sorry I cannot recall right off the bat the titles of his books. Best of luck with your Harrises--who seem to use the same given names E.W.Wallace PS Where did you find records of the will and/or guardianship of Daniel Hix? Book or film? The reason is in one of his land patents in Goochland Co., he claimed he had transported one John Williams. However, John Williams had been in Henrico Co//Goochland Co., later Hanover Co.,. long before Hix named John Williams as a *transportee*. Some of my genealogical friends speculate Hix was a kinsman of John Williams. Not unlikely!!! EWW In a message dated 1/12/2009 12:11:33 A.M. VA???? To: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii I've studied the records of Wilminton Harris for some time finding him in early 1746/47 Goochland Co. tithables as Sexton of St. James Northam staying in Goochland for years after that when he started showing up in records of Lunenburg Co. (1750's) and in 1768 (of Charlotte Co. VA) selling his Goochland Co. land (w/wife Joanah). Recently, I ran across his name in a 1759 Amelia Co. VA record as a witness to a deed of Child/Chiles to Southerland with the land in Amelia being the same as the land mentioned in the next Amelia Co. deed (DB 1, p 20) indicating Timothy Harris having the earlier patent on a portion of this Amelia land on Nummisseen Cr. Wilminton Harris was witness in the Goochland Co. 1734 will of Daniel Hix/Hicks along w/Capt James Holman (also Burgess of Goochland Co.) mentioned as possible guardian of Hix' two children so we can get some idea here as to Wilminton's age being at least 21 in 1734 = b ca 1713 & apparently Wilminton lived near Sherwood Harris in 1749 Goochland tithables. Kathryn Wiggins has both Wilminton & Sherwood as sons of Timothy Harris/Eliz. Womack as her "speculative research" and given the information I've gathered on Wilminton, I believe Kathryn's speculation could very well be correct on Wilminton being s/o Timothy but as far as the other children Kathryn notes for Timothy....I don't have anything more except Sherwood lived near Wilminton. Also, I don't know where Wilminton Harris finally settled & died...my last record shows him in Charlotte Co. VA (1768) but I have seen him noted as being in Granville Co. NC but have seen no record to justify that. Additionally, there is a Harris DNA from another Wilmington Harris b 1811 which they claim John Harris/Eliz. Overstreet (m 1789 Charlotte Co.VA) as the parents of this later Wilmington but that's as far back as they have for their line...which is in the unmatched section of our Harris DNA project.
