Hi, all, I apologize for the expression of my frustration in my previous post, and hope I have not offended everyone. It is just hard, on this big Harris list, to target one particular Harris family, when so very many researchers are trying to discover their own individual particular Harris family lines. It is just a hard format for the descendants of any one particular Harris line to identify their own individual Harris line, due to the sheer volume of people attempting to identify their own lines. So I do apologize to any and all. Nonetheless, here is more information that I already have at hand concerning some of the descendants of Benjamin & Sarah Dumas Harris of Hanover, Goochland, Louisa & Albemarle Cos., VA. I will continue adding more information as soon as I can gather more of what I already have, and also from new books that I have ordered, and try to get it typed up to send to everyone. (I hope those who come from this line can follow all of this documentation.) I don't really have a lot of time to devote to research, but whatever I have accumulated over the years, I will always gladly share. I am getting several notices of people being removed from Harris~Hunters. If you got a notice that you were unsubbed and you did NOT want to be, please write me. The system will attempt to deliver mail to you five times. If it can't deliver it in those five times, it automatically unsubs you. If you mark any message as "Spam" you are automatically unsubbed. Depending on the state, you might also contact by telephone or e-mail a librarian at an Historical Society of that state to see what they have. Before the Kentucky Historical Society got a new building about 20 years ago, I visited the old building and found the minutes of Baptist church in Henderson Co., KY which featured the son of an ancestor. Also, found the names of some associated persons with my ancestors. If this person were from Virginia, the Richmond University in Richmond, VA, as I recall is a Baptist University and has lots of histories I am told on early Baptists. Also, try the Family History Library catalog on www.familysearch.org but don't expect the *usual* cataloging. Evelyn W. Regards, Mary If your Harris ancestor was a minister in the Fayette Co., KY area, you might try locating the 'Draper Manuscript Collection', Series CC (Kentucky Papers) by Lyman Draper. [Use WorldCat _http://www.worldcat.org/_ (http://www.worldcat.org/) to locate a library]. Another researcher pointed me in that direction and I found an obscure notation in Vol.11:297 that broke my brick wall on my GG-Grandmother, Eliza Isabella (Harris) GIBBS. She was the daughter of Edward HARRIS, Jr. & Elizabeth CAMPBELL. Elizabeth Campbell was the daughter of Robert Campbell & Rebecca WALLACE. Elizabeth (Campbell) Harris' brother was John Poage Campbell, a well known traveling minister of his time, b. 1767, Augusta Co., VA, d. 3 Nov. 1814, Chillicothe, OH. >From my notes for John P. Campbell: Annals of Augusta County from 1726 to 1871 by Waddell (Second Ed., 1902) p. 259 "Thomas Poage son of John Sr. was a promising young minister, who died in 1793. He had recently married a Miss Jane Watkins, to whom and his brother John, he left his estate. The witnesses to the will were the Rev. William Wilson and the Rev. John Poage Campbell. The latter and John Poage were appointed executors. Mr Campbell's name was originally simply John Campbell but he added the name Poage on account of his devotion to his friend, Thomas Poage." p. 314 "The Rev. John Poage Campbell, was born in Augusta 1767, and when about fifteen years of age removed with his father to Kentucky. He subsequently studied with the Rev Archibald Scott, in his native county, and graduated at Hampden-Sidney College in 1790. Having been licensed to preach in 1792 he was for a time associated with the Rev William Graham as pastor of Lexington and other congregation. In 1795 he removed to Kentucky, an d on the 4th of November 1814 died near Chillicothe, Ohio. Dr. Dwight of Yale College, pronounced Mr Campbell a remarkably accomplished scholar and divine." A Google search will provide more on John Poage Campbell as well as Lyman Draper. i appreciate all your tips, and I'm sure they have helped your researches to some degree. I've been studying the history of localities along the migration patters for around 5 years, with reference to a variety of original sources, mostly early newspapers. The 1st early Panic was in 1819-20, and probably did much to affect the Carolinas. More important was the opening up of Indian lands and the Gold Rush (one of the reasons why announcing gold was found in the Dakotas post 1865, I think, when it wasn't true). I have found much of value in learning more about Jackson's career, as his friends R.K. Call, Sam Houston (in another line), James Gadsden and John Branch loom large in my studies. Jackson's war on Biddle's Bank of the United States does figure amongst my ancestors, as A.E. and many of those he must have associated with contributed to the state banks that were to replace Biddle's Bank. Also important, as I mentioned, are Masons, development of local schools - primarily Wesleyan Female College in Macon GA - and ARP and the Methodist Episcopal Church, although there are some Baptists here and there.. Most important has been 1st and 2nd Seminole War records - not so easy to come by, but there is more and more interest. I am sure War of 1812 also figures therein, as some of those who were at the Battle of New Orleans are connected to those who followed Jackson to his governorship in FL (Gadsden, McCall), followed by his friend Eaton. The later Eaton affair also greatly affected more people in my stories - NC and FL governor John Branch, who was Jackson's 1st choice to succeed him amongst them. Group 3 dna Harrises married into the GA Shackelford and Brodnax families. Gen. Edmund Meredith Shackelford took over after the Winfield Scott debacles and before Thomas Jesup arrived. Eli Harris 1st married Ann Hall Brodnax, Eli being a son of Thomas and Mary Baker Harris, Thomas being the aforementioned sheriff of Mecklenburg County. Ann's sister Rebecca Power (or Powers) Brodnax was Gen. Edmund Shackelford's wife. A.E.Sr's name is listed in a reference book on Indian War disturbances, GA militia prior to FL militia. His brother John J.H. Harris was a neighbor on the 1850 census to GA militia General James Watson Armstrong, who early organized militias in our north of Milledgeville location, and of course may be a source of Ebenezer's son James Armstrong Harris' name. As for loyalties, Ebenezer was perceived as a bit of a Georgian in his politics. He was a kind, sociable, caring, teetotalling family man who saw all of his brothers and all but one of his children die before he did. After the War, he did become a Republican and represented Marion county for three years, helping to put down a race riot (from one news story). But during his last year, he mostly stayed home in Ocala and went back to the Democrat party. His nephew, Frank Harris, was a proud Confederate veteran, always publishing news of the CV camps. They were all Jacksonian democrats. As for the Revolutionary sword, I understand that it might not have been my ancestor's own sword; many swords were taken as booty. All more questions to be answered some day... All this is probably waaaay more information than anyone wants, and my expertise - limited as it is - doesn't extend any further than what we know and have tried to find out about our own people. It's the result of pouring over census records for years, following intuitions and a little research, and that's all. Just a comment or two about some of the events mentioned in the following *biography*. Florida has a different history than the 13 original colonies (and those states formed from the original 13 British colonies.) For example, Kentucky was formed from Virginia in 1792. Tennessee was formed from North Carolina at a later date. And then, an expert on NC genealogy states that in the early days, if not later, many of the early residents of North Carolina came from Virginia, as the barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina do not permit safe boat landings from the Atlantic. A long time acquaintance told me some years ago that one of her ancestors was a Loyalist during the Revolution and sought refuge from the turmoil in Georgia by going to Florida. Does your ancestor have this kind of historical/personal background? Something to think about. Another historical event which may affect migration: My Revolutionary war ancestor, a sergeant in the latter part of the war in upcountry South Carolina, had seven sons, who migrated to early Louisiana (two son were in the War of 1812). Reading a county history of their home county in SC, I learned that the cotton gin had been invented, and thus the seven sons of this patriot (and multiple other families) could grow more cotton (and own more slaves) than they could in the high country of South Carolina. The author of the book, a noted historian of SC, commented that there was much migration of families going on at this time and passing through the sons' upcountry county in SC. About the surviving sons, they moved over to another part of Mississippi after the *Choctaw cession*. (We sent the Indians on the Trail of Tears, it seems.) Question: What social and historical events were taking place when your ancestor, probably from an earlier state, migrated to the place where you can now find records. Since almost everyone had a farm, I have found land records are helpful for the earliest Americans. But, do NOT overlook court records. As some genealogy experts say, nearly everyone sued his neighbor, etc. In the late 1830s-1840s, Andrew Jackson, as I understand [I am not good with details here] veoted against the continuation of the Federal Bank. A huge depression or panic occurred in the old South, in particular, and many migrated to the Republic of Texas. Unfortunately, the used history books which my husband used to buy at book sales skip some of these important events which affected our ancestors. Bah! Boyd Harris, kit # 235875, just completed the Family Tree DNA. We are confirmed in Group 3 as descendants of Edward Harris and Flora Douglas. Prior research had greatly indicated this, as my ggg-grandfather Alexander Ewing Harris Sr. was City Marshall of 1840-1841 Tallahassee and thus would have associated with James Moore Harris who ran stagecoach lines in 1830s “Middle Florida” and whose son, Isaac Ross Harris, was the 1st Mayor of Quincy, Gadsden County. James Moore Harris was the grandfather of Isaac Leonard Harris, whose extensive 1930s records of the descendants of Edward Harris and Flora Douglas ought to be well-known to Scots-Irish Harris researchers. Given other associations with Masonic leaders – Florida Grand Master Mason, and builder of the Florida Old Capitol, Richard Alexander Shine Sr. was the administrator of my ggg-grandmother Violet Alexander Harris’ estate – and A.E. Sr’s appointment as Sergeant-at-Arms for the Florida Territory at the same session that General Leigh Read turned down the election as Speaker of the Florida House (due to his wounds suffered in the 1st assassination attempt by Willis Alston), it made sense to me that a relative of Thomas Harris, 1st Sheriff of Mecklenburg County, NC would have been so received. Unfortunately, we do not yet know precisely how we plug in. But this DNA result will help confirm this track a bit. We know that my gggg-grandmother Esther was in Abbeville SC from about 1784-1828 from her obituary. We know that “Brick Wall” had lost his fortune in the 1820s because Ebenezer had never attended school but for a few months and had lamented no formal schooling. Any information or guesses appreciated. If you connect to these lines, hopefully you will find this information helpful. As we have just received these results, more study will be forthcoming once we get the results analyzed and compared further. For genealogists searching for known (or unknown) Baptist ministers, first, you might try searching google or google.books for terms like this Baptist ministers + state I have found such books (in the past I have prowled library shelves--someimes the battered one provides me with a previously unknown clue) for North Carolina and for Virginia. Evelyn W. Central Daylight Time, marybill60@att.net writes: I may never know who was the father of my Archibald Harris born ca1770's in NC, and died before 1830 in Fayette County, Illinois. But I keep searching anyway. He was an ordained Baptist preacher. Spent time in Fayette Co., Kentucky 1801-1809; Christian Co., Kentucky 1810-1817; Jefferson Co., Illinois 1817-1826; Fayette Co., Illinois 1826 when he ceased to make records. Annals of Augusta Co., VA is available on Internet Archive Digital Library _http://archive.org/index.php_ (http://archive.org/index.php) Good luck with your search. If you have NOT become acquainted with your local--or nearby--Family History Center, do a search on www.familysearch.org to try to find one in your general neighborhood. And check out the hours. The centers are manned/womaned by volunteers, who do not get paid, so their hours are irregular. At any rate, if you live in the boonies, you can at least use the online FHL catalog--and other databases which you MAY find online at that website. Much material for some localities is being digitized, and you can sit at home in your PJs and read away. (What databases does your local--or nearby--public library carry?) One of the *people-finders* which you may use--in person--is called [short title] AIS, This stands for Accelerated Indexing System compiled many years ago to help some of us who are stumped by when and where our ancestors were living--and at what time. Some kind volunteer lectured on this resource some years ago, and I have found it wonderful to find my wandering ancestors, many of whom have common surnames. What is this database (not totally accurate, but, oh, well, neither is a lot of other stuff on the internet or in books or other indexes)? This database is an index to all the US censuses through 1850; and for some western states, the index goes beyond 1850. Some of your single ancestors may have been in the western United States during and after the gold rush. He may be listed in the later Searches for the western states. Now, if you do not have a copy of *The Source* [several editions] at your library, or at your FHC, you will just have to wade in and teach yourself about AIS and other resources at that vast Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Each census year in AIS is called a SEARCH. Search 1, because the 1790 census is largely missing, is composed of early tax lists in the then United States. If you are looking for Harrises, see what Harrises are listed--and where. State and boundary changes changed a LOT during our early years, so even if the PLACE is strange for you, take a look at that geographic area. (I found my great-grandfather had left Kentucky and was down the Mississippi River in the Vicksburg area. In 1850 census, he was a co-owner of a tavern [an inn full of flat boat men.) What else is in AIS? Take a look (or lots of looks), but toward one of the last numbered Searches are mortality schedules (probably incomplete, but useful, nonetheless) for 1850 and 1860. I was fortunate enough to find two of my ancestors, and enough information that helped me go backwards in time. AIS 1860 mortality schedule told me how my 2nd great-grandmother died, when, and other information. The mortality schedule for 1850 told me that my Rose ancestor had been born in North Carolina, which helped me narrow *Which Rose? and what birthplace?* If you thought genealogy (or family history) was easy, you are wrong. You have to learn to use ALL kinds of information, which seems to be increasing every day. But always be critical of the source. For example, one of my Harris ancestors, from colonial Albemarle Co., VA, went to Madison Co., KY beginning ca 1787 (Source: The 1787 Census of Virginia by Netti Schreiner-Yanits and Florine S. Love.) These tax lists do NOT list the real estate but list the tithables, horses, cattle, slaves, etc. You may be surprised to find your ancestor having personal property in two (or more)places. The so-called 1787 census of Virginia: These are tax lists of each county claimed by Virginia in 1787, including Kentucky and West Virginia (formed 1862 or so and whatever land Virginia claimed in 1787.) These are personal property lists, which will list tithables of widows, etc. See if you can find these three volumes in your nearby LARGE library--perhaps a college or University library. They are costly to buy. There are many Harrises listed in the index. This is what I did: I photocopied the index, took a large piece of paper and arranged the list of Harrises by page number, so that I could use the busy photocopier and copy each page, if necessary, for a known Harris (belonging to my Madison Co. KY and Albemarle Co. VA; Louisa Co. VA; and Hanover Co. Harrises). May the AIS be of use to you. I was glad I attended that long ago lecture wherein the lecturer found her New England ancestor in a different state than she had anticipated. E.W.Wallace
