    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Greetings and Other Material
    2. EVELYN WALLACE
    3. Dear Harris-Hunters Based on the experienced judgment of my main doctor, I did not undergo the planned surgery--just continuing chemotherapy, which has side-effects of course.  Some lousy days! Therefore, I have resubscribed to Harris-Hunters.  Thanks for ALL the lovely cards which I got via the postal service - many from subscribers from Virginia and from North Carolina (of course, some of our early Harrises are found in those colonial records.) Speaking of whom - Virginia - I am assuming you are using the Library of Virginia website to track Virginia land patents (even through the early 21st century) for Harrises and their associates.  The oldest land patents will be listed at the very end.  On the index of the Library of Virginia website, click down to the L list - and find Land Patents - the entry which includes *Northern Neck land records*  Enter the surnames you seek and go to the end of the long list for Harrises to find the OLDEST Virginia land patents. Here is a *people-finder* which I use frequently.  Most all VA land patents mention a watercourse (that is how tobacco got shipped out).  The eight volumes of Cavaliers and Pioneers have indexes of the watercourses (creeks, rivers, branches, fords, etc.) and if you can trace the neighbors via these watercourses, you may find the families with whom the Harrises intermarried.  And many of whom migrated when our Harrises migrated. For those who are descended from William Harris and his wife Temperance Overton, also look up the Overtons.  The Family History Library in Salt Lake City has a book on the Overtons in Virginia, and you may find some clues in there.  Just check out the facts, however.  Many family histories are being filmed, so search for a film of your family histories. North Carolina - The University of North Carolina has digitized the 20 plus volumes of North Carolina Colonial and State Papers  and there is a rough index.  In my studies of colonial Granville Co., NC, I find many Harrises are listed.  In the early days, Granville Co., I am told by NC genealogical experts, Granville Co. comprised the top half of North Carolina.  Furthermore, since the barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina prevent easy entry by boat from the Atlantic, many early settlers in North Carolina came from Virginia.  (quote from Helen Leary, expert genealogist from North Carolina.) Margaret M Hofmann [note spelling of surname]has compiled about four-five volumes of these colonial land grants of North Carolina.  The books are well indexed. Be sure to check with your librarian about interlibrary loan.  You may even be able to borrow from the Library of Congress (check on that) which has a LARGE genealogical collection. A friend of mind with a degree in Library Science tells her audience that most libraries (and even community colleges) agree to ILL their books.  Years ago, I was surprised to learn that a book I borrowed on ILL came from a community college in North Carolina, far from my home in California. Again, thanks for all the lovely cards I got, and for your best wishes.  May those of you in areas which are having terrible weather and storms and electric outages soon see better days. Best wishes to all Harris-Hunters--and their in-laws and their cousins, et al. Evelyn W. Wallace

    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Some Harris Deeds (and probably witnesses) in Louisa Co. VA
    2. EVELYN WALLACE
    3. Thanks for all the communications (mostly by US Postal service) I have received from various persons wishing me good (or better) health.  Next week I start chemotherapy again.  Thank you for your good wishes. In the meantime, in trying to straighten up all my loose papers, I ran across this handwritten list which I have labeled: Harris - Louisa Co. VA Deed Book E & F, 1774-1790 (This time period began just before the American Revolution and came up to the early United States. Louisa Co. was a parent county of Albemarle Co, and was a progeny county of Hanover Co. VA.  Unfortunately, Hanover Co. is one of the unfortunate *burned counties* of war-torn Virginia. I wrote out this list of Harrises, taken from the surname index of this book: Rosalie Edith Davis, Louisa County, Virginia Deed Books E & F 1774-1790 [Manchester, MO, 1983, published by author] Mrs. Davis is no longer handling orders but someone else seems to have taken over that job  Perhaps a google.org search will help you locate the present dealer.  These books on Louisa Co. and one of surviving records of that *burned county* Hanover are paperback, but Mrs. Davis did a very careful job of abstracting the records, which she located in Virginia in what is now the Library of Virginia.  Perhaps your local librarian can help you locate some copies of these paperback books, but also a google.com search may help. As is expected, the Harris grantors, grantees, and witnesses are mostly male.  As noted, this index is for later residents of Louisa Co. From the index of cited book: Harris - 30,50,69 Anna 71,95 Archelus 3,90 Benjamin 68      (after this name I seem to have inserted a note about a land patent; PB 31-p 745)  An abstract will be under Land Records on the Library of Virginia website.  Of course, the colonial Virginia Harrises will be listed at the tail end of all other Harrises, who may have been acquiring land patents as late as 2012!!!  I use my copies of Cavaliers and Pioneers [8 volumes now] almost daily as my Dad had a good many colonial virginia ancestors.) 2. Dear List Members FTDNA is having a sale until July 15. My own personal opinion is that the Y dna tests and the Family Finder are the best products they offer. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] A Harris in Sam Walton's Biography
    2. Ira Harris
    3. Source: Sam Walton: Made in America, My Story By Sam Walton with John Huey Bantam Books, June 1993 Copyright 1992 by the Estate of Samuel Moore Walton In Sam Walton's biography he mentions a man named Claude Harris who was Wal-Mart's first buyer. He talks about Claude Harris in pages 69 - 72, 82, and 235 - 237. Claude was running a Woolworth store in Memphis, Tennessee when they first met him. "He was from Muskogee, Oklahoma, and about one quarter Indian, and had started with Woolworth out of high school. None of these fellows like Don or Claude had any college, and they did not want me hiring any college men." I hope this may help someone in their research. You never know where you may find information or a clue to get over your brick wall, so I thought I would pass it on. Ira L. This county is in North Georgia and not far from Tennessee, as well as North and South Carolina. The census shows Elijah was born about 1780 in North Carolina and his occupation is blacksmith.? He is the only member of household 813.? Elijah Harris is living next to Henderson and Elizabeth Anderson, both? from Tennessee and other families in this direction are the families of Robert Williamson, John Martin, Eslingers, Blairs, Wards, Nations, Orrs. Hugh and Margaret Burke both from Virginia are on the other side with family including a 100 year old Elizabeth Huffman from VA in the household.? Around them is the family of William Neal born about 1800 in South Carolina and his wife Rebecca born in Georgia.? Other families include the McAllisters, Strawns, Crow, Deavers and Hartsells.? Also a Thomas Wiley born about 1785 in South Carolina and his wife Elizabeth born about 1802 in South Carolina. The names of their children include a son named Elijah.? Also close by is a John Mackey born about 1784 in Virginia. Elijah Harris is listed on the 1860 Whitfield census.? According to the US Federal Census Mortality Schedules, 1850-1885, he was widowed and died June 1860 in District 11, Whitfield, Georgia, occupation of farmer. Also a Thomas Wiley born about 1785 in South Carolina and his wife Elizabeth born about 1802 in South Carolina. The names of their children include a son named Elijah. According to the US Federal Census Mortality Schedules, 1850-1885, he was widowed and died June 1860 in District 11, Whitfield, Georgia, occupation of farmer. 3. Hi Harris Hunters, I found an Elijah Harris on the 1850 Murray County, Georgia census and wondered if someone has more info on this family? This county is in North Georgia and not far from Tennessee, as well as North and South Carolina. The census shows Elijah was born about 1780 in North Carolina and his occupation is blacksmith. He is the only member of household 813. Elijah Harris is living next to Henderson and Elizabeth Anderson, both from Tennessee and other families in this direction are the families of Robert Williamson, John Martin, Eslingers, Blairs, Wards, Nations, Orrs. I am going to change my Paf program file to John Hudson, hoping that is correct. 2. Ann Gary
    3. Good morning Catherine, A note to supplement your statement regarding "a relative of Thomas Harris, 1st Sheriff of Mecklenburg Co., NC." in your below posting. 'THOMAS HARRIS Son of Samuel Harris and Martha Laird Grandson of Robert Harris and Dorothy Wiley Great grandson of Edward Harris and Flora Douglas. 3. Thomas Harris, b 4 Jun 1739, PA and died 17 May 1791 in Greene Co., GA. Note: His Bible says born in Fluvanna, VA; in 1739 this may have been what was later PA. In her book, Mrs. Wright has Hancock Co., GA. Thomas served as a Major in the North Carolina troops from Apr. 1776 to Jan. 1778. NOTE: Whitaker Bible below states Thomas & Mary Baker married in Ireland; I do not think this is true. Resided in Georgia and was the first sheriff of Mecklenburg Co. NC. He married 2 Apr 1763 Mary Baker b 5 May 1744/d 4 Dec 1818 Putnam Co. GA. From Georgia Journal 12 Jan 1819: “Died Mrs …Harris, 75 years, widow of Maj. Thomas Harris, formerly of Greene Co., died at residence of Maj. Eli Harris, Putnam Co., GA. 50 years a Presbyterian”' The above is from my research on the family of Samuel and Martha Laird Harris which you probably have, but passing also to the others in our group. Ann ----- Original Message ----- Our cousin W. Boyd Harris, kit # 235875, just completed the Family Tree DNA.  We are confirmed in Group 3 as descendants of Edward Harris and Flora Douglas.  Prior research had greatly indicated this, as my ggg-grandfather Alexander Ewing Harris Sr. was City Marshall of 1840-1841 Tallahassee and thus would have associated with James Moore Harris who ran stagecoach lines in 1830s “Middle Florida” and whose son, Isaac Ross Harris, was the 1st Mayor of Quincy, Gadsden County.  James Moore Harris was the grandfather of Isaac Leonard Harris, whose extensive 1930s records of the descendants of Edward Harris and Flora Douglas ought to be well-known to Scots-Irish Harris researchers. Given other associations with Masonic leaders – Florida Grand Master Mason, and builder of the Florida Old Capitol, Richard Alexander Shine Sr. was the administrator of my ggg-grandmother Violet Alexander Harris’ estate – and A.E. Sr’s appointment as Sergeant-at-Arms for the Florida Territory at the same session that General Leigh Read turned down the election as Speaker of the Florida House (due to his wounds suffered in the 1st assassination attempt by Willis Alston), it made sense to me that a relative of Thomas Harris, 1st Sheriff of Mecklenburg County, NC would have been so received. Unfortunately, we do not yet know precisely how we plug in.  But this DNA result will help confirm this track a bit.  We know that my gggg-grandmother Esther was in Abbeville SC from about 1784-1828 from her obituary.  We know that “Brick Wall” had lost his fortune in the 1820s because Ebenezer had never attended school but for a few months and had lamented no formal schooling. Any information or guesses appreciated.  If you connect to these lines, hopefully you will find this information helpful.  As we have just received these results, more study will be forthcoming once we get the results analyzed and compared further. My wish lists are visiting the Florida Masonic Museum, getting Violet's estate records (I tried emailing Leon County but these were never answered) and the guardianship files for AE Jr. and FE Sr. in Houston County, GA.  Unfortunately, it appears John J.H. Harris died just before the outbreak of the War.  We also cannot find his daughter Emily - she probably married or died, hopefully we just don't know whom her husband was. Below are three generations which should assist those who have gotten to at least where I was when I started my Harris investigations.  Our migration pattern is the typical PA/NC>Abbeville SC>Henry/Jasper/Bibb/Houston/Decatur Counties GA>FL or AL>TX of this Scots-Irish Revolutionary era family branch.  Ebenezer was also noted as having a sword from some ancestor in the Revolution... 1.  “Brick Wall” HARRIS, b.  NC (per later descendants’ census records); d. abt 1826/27  Prob Abbeville, SC.  Mar. 2. I think I have an error in my research. Found on findagrave that the man I call John Henry Harris is probably John HUDSON Harris. Don't know where I found the name John Henry so I will have to look back throught the mountain of notes I have on the Harris. Any help appreciated.
