    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Harris in Edgefield South Carolina
    2. Wren Harris
    3. My great-great-great grandfather was George Harris. He died in Edgefield County, South Carolina in 1819, and left heirs William, Micajah, Craven, John, Joshua (my ancestor), Jane, Elizabeth, Thomas, and George. My great-great grandfather was Joshua Harris. He was born about 1788 in South Carolina, married Elizabeth Wren about 1828 (his 2nd or 3rd marriage, lived in Edgefield County, South Carolina, and died there sometime after 1870. His children were Aramenta, Amanda, Mary, Sarah Zeline, John B., Martha Sylvesta, Jennie, Frances, and Joshua Wren Harris (my ancestor and namesake). Although I would welcome hearing from anyone researching this family any time, I plan to be in Edgefield, South Carolina on September 28 and 29, 2012, and I'm sending this hoping that you might be there, too. The Old Edgefield District Genealogical Society and Old Edgefield District African American Genealogical Society are hosting a "Southern Studies Showcase" in Edgefield on September 28 and 29, 2012. Genealogical and historical societies from all over South Carolina and parts of Georgia are being invited to participate in this two-day event that is expected to bring over 150 people to the Town of Edgefield. Go to <outbind://24/www.oedgs.org> www.oedgs.org for more details. Hope to hear from you soon, J. Wren Harris, Jr. Harris dna group 5 Columbus, GA

    3. Yikes! I have put my foot in it, for sure. I apologize to everyone. I showed Obediah & Rebecca Johnson Harris' younger daughter, Judith, as 16 in 1790, when she was, in fact, only 6 years of age. And I just found a record that proves that the "J. Cook" in Guilford Co., NC in 1810 was NOT Jacob that was the husband of Judith Harris. Sorry for the misinformation! Anyway, here are more records. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Some Suspects I am rounding up -colonial Virginia
    2. EVELYN WALLACE
    3. Discovery - I have found on Ancestry.com Genealogical Publ's book Virginia Land Records--and some entries for Hanover Co. VA--in the pages .  (Of course, this is kind of like a scrapbook--some citations and some not.  These were submissions to such as Tyler's Quarterly, William and Mary Quarterly, etc. For Pat--there are some Sneads whose naming patterns don't seem to match those of my kin of colonial Granville Co., NC later of Person Co., NC.  But, who knows? Deloris--Some folks (or at least their namesakes) later found in Granville Co--at least in the Lord Granville land patents compiled by Margaret M. Hofmann, Vol. 2-- are found in Hanover Co. VA land records--namely Luke Waldrop and probably the descendants of Henry Graves [2nd wife reportedly Mary Williams, per Martha Hiden's abstracts re Graves families.  This Mary Williams is reportedly a sister of John Williams II, who migrated from Goochland Co., VA [good records]to Granville Co. in the mid 1740s.] Luke Waldrop of Hanover but later of Granville Co. is a person of interest--he was mainly illiterate, but he was a witness to 1759 NC will of my ancestor, Daniel Williams (wife Ursala, whom I suspecting may have been a sister of either Luke or his wife [always suspicious!]. And I am beginning to collect suspicious characters with the surname Trevillian [variant spellings]  Could Luke's wife and Daniel's wife have been sisters?  Some suspicious documents here and there.  (And how many Southerners were there in the 1740s?) (Nell Marion Nugent, CAVALIERS AND PIONEERS, Vol. III, 1695-1732 [Richmond:  Virginia State Library, 1979, p. 317)  Benjamin Brown seemed to be a very generous man, making several deeds of gift of land to his children.  See Louisa Co. deeds and biography of his daughter Lucretia.  His wife is reported to have been related  to Sarah Dabney.  However, an Albemarle Co. deed dated 1762, apparently the date of death of Benjamin Brown, Sr. seems to indicate that Sarah may have been his second wife.  Refer to deed executed by William Brown cited later.  William Brown, it is inferred by the deed, was a child by a previous wife. 1743 - Louisa Co. 3. Hi Wanda - - Burning the records poses all sorts of annoying roadblocks for genealogists in subsequent years. However, I heard a story about what happened tin one No Tennessee courthouses in - - not only did the invading army burn the papers, but threw the clerk (or whomever it was who way trying to stop them) on top of the fire along with the documents! That puts thing back in perspective, doesn't it. Sandy

    3. I have not completely established that this Mary was the d/o of our Harris ancestors (John Harris and Susannah Wingo), so I haven't researched them very intensively. Here's what I have: William Isaac Estes, born May 17, 1744 in King & Queen, VA/died Mar 18 1780 in Halifax, VA He was probably the s/o Moses Estes 1769 - Amelia CoCo PPTLs In Thomas Muford’s list. . William Estes, no tithables 1779 Will of William Estes (Halifax Co, VA) lists wife, Mary, Brother John, and children: Partick, Ezekiel, Leana, Levina, Sala, and Drusilla Witnessed by James Hardwick and Elizabeth Harris Wife, executrix Security, Micajah and Moses Estes (the Elizabeth Harris mentioned could have been the Elizabeth who married William Harris, John's son. She would have been William's sister-in-law) There were 3 early Halifax Co men’s marriages, but couldn’t find theirs In Amelia Co., this Estes family lived in the same tax district as John Harris and William Harris (DNA Group 30). William Harris of Amelia Co. bought land in Halifax Co. in 1778 and then sold land to John Harris of Amelia Co. and to James Harris in 1779. Mary Harris was born ca 1746 (or 1755) in King & Queen, VA. Most agree that she died in Missouri, but dates vary all over the place.

    3. Hi Sandy, I don't have a William Harris marriage to a Mary Estes in my index. If you'll send me their dates, I'll scrutinize the info closer. Also, I don't have any DNA information on the Harris's or the Estes' since I daughter'd out on each. I haven't spent much time learning about DNA either, but it's something I hope to do soon. It sounds very complicated to my older mind. I'm hoping I can find the parents of my Henry Harris, b 1742. If I can, maybe I can connect to a DNA line. Finding our families would be much easier if soldiers hadn't burned so many records. What was their purpose anyhow? Does any have an answer? Thanks for your input, Sandy. I'll watch for your dates on William and Mary. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] More About Henry Harris, Orange Co VA
    2. Wanda Flesher
    3. Evelyn, Thanks so much for the reply. Your remarks are always very helpful. My Henry Harris was born 16 June 1742 in Orange Co VA. He died 28 Jan 1835 in Madison Co KY. He was married to Anna Bird on 26 Feb, 1766 in Orange Co VA. He first enlisted in the Rev War in 1776 in Orange Co VA. By 1778, he was in Henry Co VA. per road orders. (My Notes - "Henry Court Order Book 2, June 15, 1778 Court: John Heard, Samuel Byrd, Thomas Jamison and Henry Harris or any 3, appointed to view a road from about a mile below Gorden's Quarter across Cole's Road. Note: The location of Col. Gordon's Quarter was near Snow Creek. (See HC Order Bk 1, Feb 17, 1777 Court"). He served several campaigns in the Rev War per his pension application. I have recorded in my notes: " That at the commencement of the Revolutionary War he resided in Orange County, Virginia--that early in this war was he thinks in 1776. He volunteered and went on a campaign against the Cherokee Indians & was about 6 months the names of his officers he cannot _____ that he afterwards moved to Henry County, Virginia & went as a volunteer on a tore (tour) into North Carolina against the tories & was absent about 3 months. Early in 1781 as he thinks he went out as a volunteer in the militia & marched into North Carolina in order to join Genl Green was absent about 3 months & returned un_____ again volunteered in the militia & was in the service about Jamestown & Yorktown till a few days before Cornwallis surrendered. He thinks he was in command of Genl Lawson last tour he was out & knows he went home a few days before the surrender of Cornwallis in consequence of Lick__ He states that his memory has failed him very much of __ that he knows he served the four tours He has __ but the names of his officers most __ particulars have gone from him that he has no documentary evidence in his possession of his Services. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present & declares that his name is not on the pension note of the aging of any State Signed Henry Harris __________ this day & was aforesaid" (Pension was granted). Several have gone into the DAR through this Henry Harris. His children per my record are: 1. Winnefred HARRIS, b 15 Jan 1767 in Orange Co VA. She married Joshua DILLINGHAM (his 2nd marriage) in 1786 in Henry Co VA. 2. Elizabeth Betty HARRIS, b. 15 Aug 1768 in Orange Co VA., d. probably Madison Co KY. Married John JAMISON abt 1786. There were Jamison's in Henry Co VA at that time. They later lived in Madison Co KY. 3. Martha Patsy HARRIS, b 23 May 1770, Maryland. d before 10 Feb 1842, Franklin Co, MO, USA. Married Samuel DENT abt 1790. They lived in Madison Co, KY before moving to MO. 4. Nancy HARRIS, b. 6 May 1772, Maryland. d 23 Oct 1848, prob Madison Co KY. Married Elisha ESTES III, 29 Aug 1791, Franklin Co, VA. (Elisha died in Madison Co KY, sometime after 1832). 5. Rhoda HARRIS, b 9 Mar 1774, of Orange Co VA. d. No Info. Married Sam KELLEY abt 1792. 6. Zebulon HARRIS, b abt 1775, d. No Info. Married Elizabeth Dillingham, 14 Dec 1793, Henry Co VA. They were in Madison Co KY in 1821 per Madison Co KY deed records. I have researched Henry quite a bit, and there's always more to do. I know others have done some searching too, since they've gone into the DAR through him. I once found info on-line listing his ancestry way back to the earliest days, but no sources were listed and I want something concrete. One pedigree gives Henry's father as Thomas HARRIS, whose parents are Edward HARRIS and Mary NEW - going on back from there. If anyone can site sources about this family, I'm open to any help or direction. There were several Henry Harris's back then. Finding the right one is the key. 2. No, Nicholites came from Joseph Nichols of DE/MD and were actually meeting on land that may have belonged in my Mason line of DE/MD in Kent DE. notes: In the 1770's there was a migration of people into the Deep River section of Guilford County that has been completely overlooked by historians. These people belonged to an obscure sect known as Nicholites. They have been so overlooked that even their descendents do not even know of them. A case in point is the recent history of Deep River township written by Will Pegg in whch he makes no mention of the Peggs being Nicholites. Richard Mendenhall married Mary Pegg a Nicholite, who was the daughter of Valentine Pegg, one of the original Nicholite emigrants into this area. Other prominent families in the area who were Nicholites were the Chipmans, Charleses, Horneys, Joseph Standley, and the Wheelers. _http://66.218.69.11/search/cache?p=nicholite&prssweb=Search&ei=UTF-8&u=www. fmoran.com/mdstand.html&w=nicholite&d=YhcKEW1aMHV2&icp=1&.intl=us_ (http://66.218.69.11/search/cache?p=nicholite&prssweb=Search&ei=UTF-8&u=www.fmoran.co m/mdstand.html&w=nicholite&d=YhcKEW1aMHV2&icp=1&.intl=us) (add Manloves to the above list, too) PMH It has been difficult for some NC researchers to separate the Standley family of DE from the VA lines, but this Joseph Standley/Stanley was definitely of DE/MD. 1. Re: [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Speculating
    2. EVELYN WALLACE
    3. Dear Wanda, Let's go to your last paragraphs below.  Have you any clues as to the probable residences of Henry Harris, the dates, the names of the children, etc.? In 1742, Henry's stated birth year, Virginia' boundaries were barely getting to the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains.  Orange Co. and Prince William Co. (both of which later divided), were on *the frontier*.   (Source:  Michael F. Doran, Atlast of County Boundary Changes in Virginia, 1634-1895 [Athens, GA:  Iberian Publishing Co. 1987] [now called, I believe, New Papyrus Publishing, still in Athens] I covet my eight volumes of Cavaliers and Pioneers, but the Library of Virginia Land Patents (online) may help you narrow down where the parents of Henry Harris may have been hanging their axes (hats).  Go to the topic Land Patents (the subject will include the Northern Neck land grants).  The earliest land grants (covered by the abstracts in above-mentioned eight volumes of Cavalies and Pioneers) will be at the very end of the LONG lists for Harrises!!!!  (The oldest patents are at the end.) I heard a couple of lectures in the past five years by Thomas W. Jones, who until rather recently was co-editor of the National Genealogical Society Journal (quarterly).  He gave me a lot of hope, as my Dad's ancestors all (except for some colonial Germans) had common names.  Jones lectured on collecting all the bits and pieces of the jigsaw puzzles; they don't fit when you stumble on them, but they may in the future. Also, he says--watch those naming patterns!!!!  (Of course, I cannot believe all those Overton Harrises are cousins!!!!  I am descended from one Overton Harris, son of Christopher Harris who died testate [both of them did--died testate] in Madison Co., KY.) Again, what were the names of the children of your Henry Harris?  And Thoma W. Jones believes in *inferential genealogy*.  (With common surnames, one needs a lot of inference--especially if they were in burned counties!!!) Another lecture by Jones was on *inferential genealogy*.  I like that.  You have to infer a lot, but it helps to know (or keep learning) history and geography of the places you are studying.  I had to learn early on that my great-grandmother, quite a bit younger than her elderly spouse, had made an error in giving her deceased spouse's birthplace in Kentucky. At the time, he was born that part of Kentucky between the Mississippi and the Ohio rivers belonged to the Chickasaw Indians!!!!  Back to square one--until my aunt sent me transcriptions of old letters which she and a cousin had discovered in an old trunk at the old ranch house.  Ah--another place to study in Kentucky!!!  And maternal cousins in Illinois and Missouri!!! A few years ago, I spent half a day at the Orange Co. VA courthouse as we were vacationing in that area.  The deed indexes of early date were so full of names which I recognized as antecedents of my Rev. Andrew Tribble (early Baptist minister in and around Madison Co., KY.)  I ordered quite a few photocopies of the indexes alne [no deeds], but the clerk, who was quite timid, had to confer with her supervisor.  The supervisor would let me have only about ten photocopies, and the underclerk said, She is afraid you will put them on the internet!!!!  I thought to myself, this clerk is behind the times!!!!  As she was speaking someone was probably already inputting!!!  Orange Co. ca 1740s was the Virginia frontier on the North and Brunswick Co. was the frontier on the south.  (I discovered some of my early Surry Co. and Isle of Wight families were later found in Brunswick county, a huge county!!!) Good luck with your colonial and later Harrises! They had a son Elisha Estes Jr, b 1729 in Henry Co VA who married Frances Bottom.  I'm descended from their dau Dicia Dicey Estes who married Jesse Kirby.  The Kirby's son, Elisha died in Madison Co KY. Elisha Estes Jr and Frances Bottom also had a son Elisha Estes (I term him, III), b1754 of Henry Co, VA and died in Madison Co Ky.  Elisha Estes III married Nancy Harris, a dau of Henry Harris and Annie Bird Harris.  Henry Harris was born 16 June 1742 in Orange Co, VA, lived in Henry Co VA before migrating to Madison Co KY where he died 28 Jan 1835.  The family would have moved to Madison Co KY between 1790 and 1798.  His property lay very close to Christopher Harris' as noted in a deed dated abt 1825.  From my notes, "On 1 Apr 1816, he attended estate sale of Wm Harris, deceased, purchased a waistcoat, a pair of shears. Other Harris's at sale were Foster Harris, Overton Harris, and Polly Harris." Henry and Ann had 5 dau's and probably 1 son, Zebulon Harris.  From my notes, "Zebulon is BELIEVED to be son of Henry Harris.  Zeb married Elizabeth Dillingham dau of Joshua and Sarah Graham (lst wf) Dillingham.  Joshua's Dillingham's 2nd wf was Winnifred Harris dau of Henry Harris and probable sister to Zebulon...Winifred Harris Dillingham would be the step mother of Elizabeth Dillingham, Zebulon's wife.."  Are any of Zeb's descendants researching the family and are there any DNA records for this family? I, personally, daughter'd out with Henry and Annie Bird Harris. Thanks to all who contribute to this list.  I really enjoy it. Unfortunately, I'm still searching for any proof of Henry Harris's (b.1742) parents.  Any info is greatly appreciated. I still don't know where Obediah & Rebecca's eldest son was at that time, but I do know that their son, Benjamin 1764-1850) was not in either Surry Co. or Guilford Co., NC. However, I did find two of Obediah's daughters' families, and have put the additional information into the family records. I realize that few persons on this list may be interested in the Mendenhall lineage coming into this Harris line, so I will just state that there is clear proof that Mordecai & Charity Mendenhall, a newly-married couple, moved from Pennsylvania to the Hopewell Monthly Meeting in Virginia in 1736, and were granted a certificate with their family to North Carolina in 1756. Their oldest child was Richard Mendenhall, b. 1737, and who was "LOST" in 1773, whose wife was Jane. 3. Hi Wanda, If I follow what you posted and remember what I posted, several male descendants of Abraham Estes/Barbara Brock married Harris women who are related to different Harris yDNA lines! I've never been terribly successful in tracing the descendants of William and Mary (Estes) Harris. Perhaps I'll give it another try! They sure didn't make it easy for us to figure them out 200 years later! What is your Harris yDNA connection? 3. Have you looked for these names on the Land Patents list [newest patents first--even the 21st century] of the of the Library of Virginia website?  Google for Library of virginia.  (You will need some approximate dates for these fellows.)  There is an alpha index.  Go to the L's for Land Patents--and you want the title which includes *Northern Neck land records*.  The oldest patents will be at the very end--and be patient, as the Harris list is LONG.  The oldest counties are near the Atlantic, and as we took land away from the Indians, we then moved inward.  And the counties kept dividing, so don't e hung up on one county.  E.W.Wallace ________________________________ From: Anne Harris <amh504@yahoo.com> To: "harris-hunters@rootsweb.com" <harris-hunters@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, August 31, 2012 7:07 AM Subject: Re: [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Major William Harris Does anyone know Who Major William Harris, son of Captain Harris married? 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] 2nd Chancery suit Lewis Harris Southampton Va
    2. Mary Kennedy
    3. Hopefully when this shows on list the puncuation will be ok...there should not be any question marks on page so if they appear it will represent quotation marks , brackets, parenthesis etc. I am the proven descendant of Williamson , the proven son of Howell. I only included text from the frames that had actual records on them and I did not include texts of all that was on the frames of account figures or the numerous pages of insolvents nor did I include the frames of the outside folds which only had suit identifier on it. Chancery Suit # 2 Southampton Co. Va. Chancery Papers Dated 1830 This suit may be found on Southampton Co. Va. Chancery Causes Library of Va. Microfilm # 421 starting frame #484 which is the frame of the folder suit is in. This second chancery suit was filed by the heirs of Lewis Harris deceased against Lewis Harris , the son of deceased Joel Harris, as the administrator of his Uncle Lewis’s estate. This cause was filed after Lewis did not pay them their share of the estate as decreed by the court in the first suit. The sum of which amounted to over $11,000.00. He claimed he had held the estate before the first suit by reasoning the estate might not be sufficient to pay the debts. He had already sold the perishable estate and hired out the slaves by the time the rest of the heirs had filed the 1st suit, around 2 years after Lewis , the elder, died. While it is identified in Microfilm records on cover folder as 1830 , the first papers entered Aug 1829 are the copied list of complainants and reads the same as the 1st suit until the second page where for a space of 6 inches or so there are wavy lines to separate the names from the text that is found at the bottom of the page . There must have been attachments of exhibits as they are mentioned, order of admin. and 1st decree. Pages were microfilmed with some out of sequence in part due to folds and also perhaps pages not in order when folded . The pages are usually microfilmed in the order as first unfolded. The papers were often folded and on the outside was written the info of those particular papers and then after settlement all the different orders, decrees etc. were folded together. the cover in which the entire 2nd suit , was folded and filed in states : 1831 June decreed as for (smudge) filed (possibly the date filed after final decree or settlement) Note: Lewis SR. and JR. are used in 2nd suit, however, we know that Lewis Harris who had died and left estate now in chancery was” unmarried and without issue” per 1st suit and this one. Therefore he is not technically Sr. and Lewis Jr. admr. is actually referred to as “his nephew” on more than one occasion in the 2nd suit. Once on frame # 487 8th line from the bottom of the page and again on frame # 492 8th line from top of page when all are noted as being “nephews and nieces of the intestate”. He also got his part(refer to 1st suit in which he is noted as being “as well as in his own right heir” or similar wording) Since Lewis (Jr.) admn. is actually the son of Joel , the brother of the deceased Lewis(see first suit), he is not a Jr. at all. This was only used in the 2nd suit to distinguish the two apart. Some pages have repeats of the same thing but in different handwriting and are a part of different documents. The original suit had estimate of 40 heirs but some knowledge had been gained of Suckey Rick’s children by the time of Cobb’s decree. The decree has a number of names repeated , others left out at times but included in next line etc. due to Mr. Cobb or his clerk‘s error when writing Frames 486, 487 The first page has same exact names copied obviously from first suit‘s decree ,which has been already sent to list, but written more neatly, the names extend to the top of the second page Frame 487 then About 6 inches or more of wavy lines without text Presumably this was to indicate between the list of heirs/ complainants and where the "exhibits" mentioned below would be, however none were with papers Followed by this text: That Lewis Harris (noted Sr here) late of the county departed this life posesed(sic) of a considerable personal estate--that he was unmarried & without issue--that admin. Of his estate was granted TO HIS NEPHEW Lewis Harris Junior ---as will appear by an attested copy of his letters of adms. Cobb’s charge of $13.00 is on frame #497 Lewis Harris died in 1826 but the accounts must have been done after original order as it starts with date of 1827 then 1829 items and then 1828 and after that more 1828 accounts ..so the dates of accounting are definitely not in sequence There was $160.33 cash found in house , this was the first item noted, a year after Lewis died. The final accounting also lists a payment to Geo. M Gray Dec 1827 for a survey fee…this is a survey of a portion of Lewis Harris Jr. land as the survey for 307 ½ acres is recorded in Procession Book p. 35 with plat and was done Dec. 1827 --below that are 2 other surveys done for others and signed by Gray. The survey would have been under the name of the owner on record of the property who had been known as Lewis Jr. before 1802/03 in Southampton records. The day in Dec. is blank and Gray did not sign as he did the others but the date for pmt., from the estate, was Dec 4, 1827 for $12.07...with rect(receipt) The chain bearers were also paid for chain carrying ..they received $1.00 each. His “shrouding clothes” were paid for as well as his coffin and then follows a list of persons paid and expenses. The next page continues much the same with perhaps a jumble of paids mixed in with receivables. The sales that are due the estate follow next in Dec. 1828..some of which appears due by 1829 and are listed under the acct. paid out for some reason Clerk may have been a little too lavish with his “ “ (dittos). The rest of expenses are on this page. After the debts owed are the amounts that came to the estate and these start with date of Dec.1829 so apparently no money had come to estate until then which is about 3 years after Lewis died. After debts were paid and all that could be collected was received from others the bal. in the estate was $11,739.63 to be distributed. Frames #498- 501 can be found the list of insolvents who owed the estate. By my quick addition the estate was owed over 200pd. (sterling S used in front of amounts which included shillings and pence) and over $200.00 with $ sign used . The oldest that I noticed was from the 1780’s..this was quite a large sum of money for those days!! It might be best to copy and paste each segment seperately for better reading. Hope this helps someone Mary
