Hi Evelyn Speaking of our Vardeman ancestors. . . I ran across a series of interesting findagrave sites yesterday about yet another family of intrepid Vardeman pioneers. James (ca 1750-1797) was the 4th son of "our" William Vardeman with his 2nd wife Bridget Tinkler. James and his 2nd wife Sabra Lyles had a son, William (1775-bef 1840) in the old 96th district in SC. He married Ruth Vining (two of his brothers also married Vining sisters). William, Ruth, at least four of their children and three other families traveled by wagon and raft from Putnam Co, GA deep into Alabama. The area where they settled in 1819 was then populated by Creek Indians who were not happy about their arrival. It is now Talladega Co, AL. Two Vardeman sons and two daughters married two Robeson daughters and two sons. If you follow the links starting with William and Ruth, you will find dozens of gravestone photos and interesting family stories about one line of Vardemans about whom I had know little. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=34923240 On Oct 18, 2012, at 4:40 PM, EVELYN WALLACE wrote: > I was very pleased recently to discover that on HeritageQuest, a database to which many public libraries subscribe (check with your State library if no local one has this database) to find this book. > > > (Do you have Scotch Irish who came down the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and are found in the records of such counties as Albemarle, and surrounding counties? > > The title which I found was by John Craig. > > > List of baptisms by Rev. Hi, all, Further records of the descendants of Benjamin & Sarah Dumas Harris through their son, Obediah & his wife, Rebecca Johnson Harris. Recall the much earlier documentation of the marriage of George Shugart in North Carolina to Mary Davis? Here is where the family tie-in finally shows up. Pam pamstone@cfl.rr.com ============================= YOUNG, op. cit. pp. 229-230: GREEN TOWNSHIP. . JOHN LEWIS was born in Guilford Co., N.C, in the year 1765, and was married to Sarah Ruct. In 1810, he came with his family to Wayne Co., Ind., and settled half a mile south of the present town of Williamsburg. His eldest son, Richard, who had attained the age of majority, accompanied the family. These were the first settlers in what is now Green township. Hence it will be readily presumed that he had a thorough experience in all that pertains to pioneer life in a timbered country. He lived on the farm on which he first settled until his death. His children were: 1. Hannah, who married Thomas Lamb, of Green township; 2. Richard, who married Lavina Hall; 3. Sarah, wife of Obadiah Harris, who lives near Indianapolis; 4. Naomi, who married James Harris, and died in the township; 5. Martha, wife of Samuel K. Boyd, died in the township; 6. Priscilla, who married David Martindale, and died near Indianapolis; 7. He had nine children: 1. John, who married Sarah Ratliff. 2. Sarah, who married, first, Joseph Ratliff; second, David, son of Obadiah Harris, 2d. 3. Mary, who married Thomas Harris. Ira, My notes show a possible lead on Obadiah Harris, strictly a shot in the dark. My Louisa Harris, born 1820 in Warren Co., KY, was married to a Caleb May. They moved to Postoak, Johnson Co., MO between 1830 and 1840. JohnsonCo. is not too far from Cooper Co. Louisa was a daughter of Graves Harris. Many of the records from the Cedar Creek Meeting House have been transcribed into book form and are available online as a FREE E-Book: Our Quaker Friends of Ye Olden Time, Being in Part a Transcript of the Minute Books of Cedar Creek Meeting, Hanover County, and the South River Meeting, Campbell County, Va., by James Pinkney Pleasant Bell. Mary Marshall Brewer also published additional records in her book, Quaker records of Cedar Creek Monthly Meeting, Virginia, 1739-1793. Lewes, Delaware : Colonial Roots, 2002. 205 p. I have found reference to some Harrises in DNA Group 20 mentioned in the Cedar Creek Monthly Meeting records. These are Quakers (of course) and include John Harris (Bet. 1662-1771-ca. 1745), his son Daniel Harris (ca. 1705-???) and grandson, Cornelius Harris (1735-ca. 1807). John married Mary Stanley, and the Stanley family is well-known in Hanover and Henrico Counties. Some other families listed which may be of interest include Cheadle, Chiles, Dabny, Goode, Johnson, McGeehee, Moorman, Stanley, and Watkins. Here are some transcribed records. Hi, Harrises, Here are more records of the descendants of Benjamin & Sarah Dumas Harris through their son, Obediah, and his wife, Rebecca Johnson Harris. As I previously said, I am trying to present all the information in approximate chronological order, but it is really difficult to do so, given all of the various records & sources for this end of this family. (The county histories, while providing valuable information, are particularly difficult, as there is not any chronological order given at all in them.) Anyway, I hope the information will be comprehensible to everyone if you put it all in the same folder and study it all. Pam pamstone@cfl.rr.com ======================== YOUNG, op. cit. p. 298: NEW GARDEN TOWNSHIP. . At the time of the Indian alarms during the War of 1812, the inhabitants of the township, like those of other settlements, fled for safety to Richmond and other places. Only George Shugart and Obadiah Harris Sen., it is said, remained in the settlement and were unmolested. . --- --- pp. 218-219: FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP. . BENJAMIN HARRIS, from North Carolina, settled, in 1807, about six miles north from Richmond, and four miles southeast from Newport, in the south-west part of the present township of Franklin. He was a son of Obadiah Harris, Sen., elsewhere noticed. He died about the year 1850, on the farm on which he first settled. He had fifteen children, thirteen of whom attained to the age of majority, and were married: 1. Obadiah, who married Sarah, daughter of John Lewis, of Green, and settled on Green's Fork, near Williamsburg, now resides near Indianapolis. 2. Pleasant, who married Hannah Massey, and settled in New Garden; afterward on Nettle Creek, near Dalton. He has since lived at South Bend, and last in Iowa, where he died. 3. James, who married Naomi, a daughter of John Lewis, and settled on Green's Fork, where he died. 4. Beersheba, who married Job Coggeshall, and settled near Newport, where she died. He resides at Williamsburg. 5. John, who married Nancy Harvey; settled in Center, removed thence to Newcastle; thence to Iowa, where he died. 6. Benjamin, who married Lydia Hiatt, lived on his farm three years, and then settled near Williamsburg, where he lived until 1868, and now resides one mile from Richmond. Mrs. H. died in July, 1867; and he married in April, 1870, Hannah Ann Estell. 7. Rebecca, who married Henry Dutterow, and settled in Franklin township. 8. Sarah, who married John Catey, of Green. 9. Margaret, who married John Gardner, and lives in Oregon, where he died. 10. David, who married in Illinois, and died there. 11. Aaron, who married Martha, daughter of Richard Lewis, and resides in Huntington County. 12. Elizabeth, who married Seth Gardner, and lives near Arba. 13. Nathan, who married, first, Hannah Thompson; second, Mrs. Edith Anderson, and resides at Union City. OBADIAH HARRIS, from North Carolina, father of Benjamin, came several years later than his son, and still later, Obadiah, another son. They settled in New Garden, a mile south from Newport, whence they removed to Randolph County. Both father and son were preachers in the Society of Friends. . --- ============================= END OF FILE =============================
Hi, all, Here is more on the descendants of Benjamin & Sarah Dumas Harris. As I am sure many of you noticed, I have been unable to locate the 1820 census records of Obediah Harris III & Pleasant Harris (sons of Benjamin & Margaret Ingle Harris,) who were both disowned by the Whitewater Monthly Meeting in 1813 for marrying contrary to discipline. I do find later records of each, however, but their descendants are not as clear as many of the others from this line. There are several county histories of Wayne & Grant Cos., Indiana, and each provides different information on a few of the numerous descendants of this line. Here is information from the earliest county history of them that I have located. The history is confusing, I think. Stitt as follows: At the June term, 1811, the commissioners appointed by an act of legislature, having failed to discharge their duty according to law, in selecting a seat of justice for the county, the court declared their duties ended, and appointed in their stead Samuel Walker, Richard Maxwell, and Benj. Harris. Richard Rue and Ephraim Overman were members of the territorial legislature of 1810, from the county of Dearborn, of which the present county of Wayne formed a part. There were then but three counties in the territory, Knox, Clark, and Dearborn The Commissioners to locate the county seat were John Addington, George Holman, and John Cox. The law prescribing their duties and fixing the time and the place of their meeting, did not reach the court, then held at Rues, until about a month after its publication And the court ordered that the town in Wayne, or the seat of justice, shall be called Salisbury. This action of the court was denounced by friends of the central location A paper was circulated to take the sense of the citizens in respect to the legality of the action of the court, designed to be presented to the court. The result showed 330 in favor of the report of the legislative committee [two of which determined that the seat should be in the center of the county], and 150 approving the action of the court. Efforts were soon made for the removal of the county seat to Centerville. In the midst of the bitter strife between the Salisbury and Centerville parties an act was passed in 1816, authorizing the removal of the county seat to Centerville --- p. 83: Organization of Townships The first Constitution of the State of Indiana was adopted in 1816. Its principal stream is the middle fork of Whitewater, which enters the township from Ohio, about 2½ miles south of the north-east corner, and runs almost directly south, about half a miles from the Ohio line, to the south line of the township. --- ========================== END OF FILE ==========================
Hi, all, Continued records of the descendants of Benjamin & Sarah Dumas Harris through their son, Obediah. I am trying to send all of this in a chronologically-based manner, but it is difficult to do so because there are so many different sources and so many different parts of this line. So as I have previously said, please place all the files I have sent & am sending into one folder on your computer, where you can then look at each posting, and coherently connect them all together. The dreary part of this county history is not so dreary when you realize that the Benjamin Harris, and his son Pleasant were the son and grandson of Obediah & Rebecca Johnson Harris. Hi, everyone, Continuing records of the descendants of Benjamin & Sarah Dumas Harris through their son & his wife, Obediah Rebecca Johnson Harris. You will notice in some of the historical records later presented that there was definitely a "change of heart" by the civil authorities regarding the Quakers (at least in the case of this particular Harris family.) The authorities appear to have finally realized that the Quakers were hard-working, honest, and trustworthy, and began to select them to perform some civic duties. This was a significant change of attitude by the civil authorities. (Remember the numerous instances in the 1700s Virginia records when the Quakers were jailed for failure to pay for the salaries of ministers of the Church of England, or for refusing to fight in the various military conflicts?] Pam pamstone@cfl.rr.com =============================== Extracted from: National Archives Microfilm Roll # M33_94 1820 Federal Census, Montgomery County, Ohio Key: Free White Males: Under 10, Of Ten and Under 16, Of 16 to 17, Of 18 and Under 26, Of 26 and Under 45, Of 45 and Upwards Free White Females: Under 10, Of Ten and Under 16, Of 16 and Under 26, Of 26 and Under 45, Of 45 and Upwards Number of Foragers Number of Farmers Number of Merchants Number of Mechanics - pp. 100: "Randolph" [Township] .
