    3. Gary, As I have explained before... this DNA testing takes time. After the test are returned to the FamilyTreeDNA.com people they are grouped into batches and sent to the lab every 2 weeks. The test take at least 2 weeks to come back so it takes at the best (almost) a month to get results back. Of the test sent in so far... only 2 have come back with results. There have been 2 previous test taken (before the study started) and those results are also back but unfortunatley none of the test show any type of match so far. As soon as there are results to report with any connections there will be an announcement made on all the Harris groups that I belong to. Jeff Harris Harris DNA Study Group Administrator I am a Cooper so I am not eligible to donate DNA. One of my grandfathers was Wm. Harris/ wife Temperance Overton. I have good research from this pair down to me. I would very much like to connect this William Harris to the earlier Harris men in Jamestowne. Have you donated DNA, or do you know if the Harris DNA group has a Group Administrator? Thanks, Gary

    3. Ira, I was amazed that no one added information to what you posted across Alabama and Mississippi on the Land Patents. I did wonder if you thought no one was alive and reading the material in this area. I kept thinking I would find something on my Harris family that went to Alabama and Mississippi, but no such luck. So don't think no one was interested, as I read all the postings with interest. Larealia Camp

    1. [HH] Thank you Ira!
    2. Dear Harris researchers: I would hope that no one wants to discourage the posting of the basic research information that is being posted. This is being done in a very unselfish manner and for anyone that needs this information it is absolutely wonderful. If you don't need it......hit the delete button but don't ruin this extraordinary effort for the rest of us. This information would take hours upon hours of work to gather but here it is at our fingertips, already typed in and all we have to do is hit the select all key, copy and then paste. What wonderful technology........but only because someone was willing to spend their time to type it into their computer in the first place and then send it out to us. My only regret is that I don't know if these are my Harris line or not. Maybe with the help of folks like Ira, I'll find out one of these days. Thanks to Ira and everyone else that shares their information. Chuck Harris .

    1. [HH] Edward Harris of New Kent Co., 1664 - Some Speculation
    2. Ira Harris posted this info: Source: CAVALIERS AND PIONEERS         Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants         VOLUME ONE: 1632-1666         Abstracted by Nell Marion Nugent EDWARD HARRIS, 730 acs. New Kent Co., 19 Dec. 1664, p. 117, (616). On S.W. side of Yorke Riv. By land of George Smith, by tankes Pasbehaies to Cattaile Sw. & Adj. Edmonds land. Granted to Charles Edmonds, 29 June 1657, by him deserted & granted by order of court &c., 30 Sept. 1663 & due for trans. of 15 pers.* What Edward Harris is this? What line does he fit into? Any insight is appreciated. Please respond through HH or H-COLONIALVA so that others may be helped. Response: Genealogists should always keep an open mind. I am unsure that a man named Edward Harris, living in 1734 in Hanover Co., may be the same person who many years earlier patented the cited land. There seems to be a great gap in the time span. However, we know that part of New Kent Co. became Hanover Co., one of those infamously "burned counties" of Virginia. Dr. Malcolm Hart Harris in one of his articles about some of the Harris family members, published a number of years ago in The Virginia Genealogist, differentiated one William Harris, who was associated with the Alves/Alvis family, from the William Harris who married Temperance Overton. Can we speculate that Edward Harris is of the extended family of that William Harris, who, I believe bore the prefix Major? >From ca Aug 1734 court minutes, Hanover Co. is a long inventory of the estate of David Alvis in the hands of David Crenshaw his late Guardian. (p. 123-126 of Hanover Co. court minutes). Immediately following that inventory is that of one Mary Alves, dated May 25 1732. The relationship of Mary Alves to David Alves is not stated. These inventories are followed by these minutes: In obedience to the order wee the subscribers met Michael Holland and being absent the parties viz. David Crenshaw late Guardian of David Alvis Infant and Edward Harris his present Guardian consented that we should settle all account to the Estate of sd. orphan and accordingly wee find to be due from ye sd. orphans Estate unto David Crenshaw Ten pounds 6 pence three farthens Currt. money and that the sd. parties did agree that wee should settle an account hereunto annexed to the estate of Mary Alves deceased. Wee find to be due from David Crenshaw administrator of sd. Mary unto David Alves Orphan Ten pounds-15 sterling. Cha. Chiswell Richard Clough 4 Oct 1734 Settlement of the Estate of David Alves Orphan of George Alves dec'd was recorded. (Source: Rosalie Edith Davis, HANOVER COUNTY, VIRGINIA COURT RECORDS 1733-1735: DEEDS, WILLS AND INVENTORIES [Manchester, MO: Published by author, 1979], pp. 35-37) Further Speculation: Please refer to your abstracts from Nugent's Vol III 1695-1732: New Kent Co. Refer to the second entry for a William Harris who patented land in New Kent Co.... beg. on the South River over against George Alvis' land.... 16 June 1714. Can there be a connection? I think for many years to come, genealogists will be pondering the answers to your questions. There seem to be few clues among the currently searchable documents for any of us to be clear about these relationships. E.W.Wallace

    3. Several Harrises are listed that had property in Isle of Wight County, VA. I don't know if these are the ones or not but these were in that county and the time frame is correct. Thomas Harris 1636 - 1688 married Ann Martin and his son, Edward 1663 - 1734 married Mary Turner. Robert Harris in his book "From Essex England to the Sunny Southern USA states on p. 12 that Edward received several land grants in Isle of Wight County including 540 acres on the south side of the main Blackwater Swamp beginning at the fork of the Warrick (Warreck?) Branch. Also on March 24, 1725 he received 250 acres on the south side of Brushy Branch. This would seem to tie them in with the abstracts listed. If these are the correct Harrises, they are descended from Arthur, William, John 1588 - 1638 and Thomas 1616 - 1672. One line of descendants from this Edward is West Sr., Rowland, Daniel and Thomas Augustus. I would be interested to hear if anyone can verify or discredit the above.
