Hi, You ask. When and why Isham moved from Isle of Wight, VA to Granville County, NC. According to Robert E. Harrris' book, West, Sr. and Mary moved there with their family about 1746. At that time Isham was five years old. West moved from there to Montgomery County by 1774. At that time Isham would have been 33 years old so apparently he stayed in Granville. My wife is descended from Rowland who is Isham's brother. Most of Rowland's descendants settled in Stanly County, NC which was split off from the western part of Montgomery. So many of you have offered to help me with my Harris family from Ga-Ala-MS, that I think I need to outline the problem a little. It is lengthy, but here goes. About 90 years ago a descendant of this line did some research or hired research done and got it published to the detriment of fact-seekers. I prefer to think she did this unintentionally. This invented line was grafted in at least two places onto other Harris lines. One of the problems is that the invented line leads to Pocahontas. So I suspect that some or many people were satisfied to accept it as it was presented which I did initially. Summer of 2002 we made a trip from Ga. to Cumberland and Surry Co Va. seeking proof of this line to the Richard said to be father of my Thomas who died in Baldwin Co., GA. I needed this proof for the DAR. What I found did not pan out. After I got home with my wills, etc. and examined them further I found that Thomas, the son, died before Richard, the father, yet was left income by Richard. Further questions in my mind led to a second trip to VA the same month. My Thomas from Baldwin Co., GA is not the son of this Richard from Cumberland Co., VA although Richard did have a son named Thomas who married Jane Taylor. This Richard from Cumberland Co. also has descendants who know who some of Richard's children were. So that is all I really needed to know to learn I must look elsewhere for parents of my Thomas. However, I then learned that Richard from Cumberland Co. was not the son of John Harris and Martha Eldridge from Surry Co., VA but was the son of John Harris (d. 1795) and Eliza from Cumberland Co. VA. who left a will in Cumberland. Further the John Harris from Surry Co. who married Martha Eldridge of the Pocahontas family did have a son named Richard who never married. Further research with the help of Paul Tobler has led me to Granville Co., NC to a Thomas Harris who was a minor when his father, Thomas Harris, died about 1779 (memory). Guardian papers are recorded for this son although he was not in his father's will. He is also named as the son of Thomas in his grandfather, Robert Harris', will. The area in Granville Co. where this family lived is near the Warren Co/Halifax/Edgecombe area where my Thomas' wife is from. This looks the most promising of any of the many Thomas Harrises I have researched. If anyone has a clue, please tell me. Please read Paul Tobler's post below. Thanks and apologies for the length. Larealia Camp Below is a post from Paul Tobler to Harris-VA list last year. These are facts he has found: Thomas Harris b. VA, d.Bet. 12 December 1816 - 08 January 1817 Baldwin Co.,GA. Wife was Sarah Gardner Also found out they were members of the Baptist, member of Church of Christ on Long Creek of Ogechee, Warren Co., GA in 1804. The Gardner's were from the Edgecombe Co.,/Halifax Co., NC area prior to removing to GA. Is not the son of Lt. Richard Harris & Mary Ann Harris Lt. Richard Harris is found to be the son of John Harris & Eliza rather than John Harris and Martha Eldridge John Harris and Martha Eldridge had a son Richard who died testate without issue leaving a violin in his will. This was proven by following statement in Lt. Richard Harris will: Item 3rd I give to my son Thomas Harriss fifty pounds annually for five years, and also my interest in the following slaves to wit Hannah and her children and my little bay mare now at Jno Harrisses. (since you don't leave a 5 year income to a dead child it became clear something was awry) With Fran Fletcher's help we have managed to get some of this straightened out but now we are left with no parents for this Thomas Harris that married Sarah Gardner as well as no parents for the father of Lt. Richard Harris namely John Harris and his wife Eliza. Paul Tobler - -----------------------------------------
Dr. Malcolm Hart Harris, now deceased, did a good deal of research on William Harris and Temperance Overton and some of their descendants. His later studies were published in volumes of The Virginia Genealogist edited by John Frederick Dorman. Dr. Harris did not link William to the Jamestown Harrises. Those of us who have studied this couple--William and Temperance--have reservations that they are linked to the Harris who was early at Jamestown. I have not studied those Jamestown folks a good deal, but enough to rule out that William Harris is linked to Thomas Harris, I believe his name was, of Jamestown. If you can interlibrary loan Adventurers of Purse and Person, the latest edition by John Frederick Dorman, and published by the First Families of Virginia you will find that the first four generations of that Harris are given, and William is not among those. The book itself, I believe, costs in the neighborhood of $85.00. How are you descended from William and Temperance Harris? I may be able to share some information with you, but I have not studied all their children--too many Harrises in colonial Virginia--and too many "burned counties." E.W.Wallace
THANK YOU IRA, FOR ALL THE HARD WORK AND TIME THAT YOU HAVE PUT INTO ALL THE INFO THAT YOU HAVE SO WILLINGLY SHARED WITH ALL OF US,SO FAR NONE OF THEM HAS BEEN MINE ON THE ONE YOU DONE LAST BUT YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN MINE OR YOURS WILL BE THE NEXT ONE. Oh, I know I can find the records if I know who to look for. What I had hoped for was someone to speak up who knew something on that line. My Harris family there are the children of Thomas Harris (d. 1816 Baldwin Co., GA) and his wife Sarah (Gardner) Harris who then married James Powell. Their son, Thomas Harris, went to Mississippi as well as their daughter Frances m. Wesley Anderson who are my ancestors. The Andersons then went back to Randolph Co., AL. but others of the family stayed in Miss or moved on to Texas. I just held out high hopes all those land records being posted would get some new information to surface. Larealia

I want to thank Ira for sharing the data. I have been doing genealogy for 5 years now and alot of people do not want to share the data because they have done all the work and feel like a newbie should do the same. Kudos to Ira. My Harris line has not shown up and I get a litte jealous to think someone has traced their line way back to the 1600's and beyond. We all came from the same line from the beginning of time and will be that way when our time ends. My line comes from Mississippi around the Hinds, Copiah and Simpson Counties. Thanks Ira for your hard work to get the information out to the rest of us and don't let one sour puss ruin the fun for the rest of us. Robin Mitchner
I look forward to the postings that Ira has been doing. I am a newbie and have learned a lot from just reading Ira's postings. I know that each of us needs to thank this gentleman for the many hours he has dedicated to our cause.
