1. [HH] Some Notes on Temperance Overton, wife of William Harris
2. Dear Listers, Some Harris-Hunters of colonial Virginia have indicated an interest in Temperance Overton, wife of William Harris, the progenitor of many Harrises of colonial Virginia and of Kentucky and probably many other Southern states. This information I have gathered over the years is not well documented, but there are enough citations that you may be able to find these publications and conduct your own research. If you do enough colonial Virginia research, you will learn that there were some Overton males in Northern Neck Virginia, which I believe have to be distinguished from those in and around New Kent and Hanover Cos., VA, with descendants in Louisa Co., Albemarle Co., and perhaps other adjacent counties. The counties kept dividing. (Overton is a popular place name in England. I visited Cold Overton near the new-old county of Rutland, a few years ago. Of course, Overton is a popular given name with persons descended from the Harris family. I have several in my immediate and extended family.) By the way, if anyone has a list of the alleged thirteen (13!!!!) children of Temperance Overton Harris, will you please share that info with me and perhaps with the list. As I remember my notes about William Harris, her husband, he did not live very long. But so many colonial records are missing, it is difficult to document much about this early family of Virginia. Major Robert Harris and I believe his brother Benjamin Harris are a couple of children for whom documentation can be produced. Here is a URL I picked up in my surfing the net: http://www.rootsweb.com/~vapittsy/Overtongen.html Notes only on Temperance Harris - subject to correction, and, of course, subject to addition: Preparer: E.W.Wallace 9/97 TEMPERANCE OVERTON. (1679 -1710) Dates are open to question based on other information given below. The list of her children may be incomplete. One Jemima Harris is reported, but not proved, to have been one of the children. The International Genealogical Index of May 1988 shows in four places that the parents of Temperance Overton were William Overton and Mary (Elizabeth) Waters and that she was born (not christened) 2 March 1679 in New Kent Co., VA. New Kent Co. was the parent county of Hanover Co., the acknowledged residence of the Harris-Overton families. Films containing this information have not been researched. Reportedly the dates are taken from the tombstone of Temperance Harris, which has now disintegrated, according to Dr. Ben Harris, ltr ca 1996. Two entries in the IGI state Hanover Co. was birthplace of Temperance Overton, which is probably incorrect since Hanover was not formed until 1720. Two entries show New Kent Co., parent county of Hanover, was her birthplace, and this is more probable. But one must recognize that possibly she was born in England. In Vol. 7 of the Lineage Book of the Daughters of the American Colonists, p, 271, the dates given for Temperance Overton, wife of William Harris are 1679-1716. No documentation is presented. (Lineage of Mrs. Virginia Field Walton Brooks, born in Jonesboro, Arkansas.) Tradition is that William Overton, her father, was an officer under Cromwell but was imprisoned at the Tower of London. Old history books of England tell us that an Overton was so imprisoned. Whether this person was the father of Temperance has not been determined. It is uncertain whether Overton was executed or whether he escaped. Francis Stuart Harmon in ADAM'S EVES believes it was William's father (Temperance's grandfather), Robert Overton, a "Roundhead" Major General, who was in Cromwell's army. More research is needed. The June 1714 Virginia Land Patent Book (Patent Bk 10, p. 132) of Charles Fleming, Henrico Co., lists among the 29 persons he claims to have imported one Temperance Harris. This would indicate she, Temperance Harris, may have married Harris in England (or Wales, as some maintain Harris was Welsh). One should bear in mind, however, that much fraud occurred in the patenting of these Virginia lands, and many persons who were transported were claimed by numerous claimants (as evidenced in Northumberland Co., VA court records). Tradition, cited by Malcolm Hart Harris, M.D., quoting William Pope Anderson, THE EARLY DESCENDANTS OF WM. OVERTON AND ELIZABETH WATERS OF VIRGINIA, AND ALLIED FAMILIES, p. 54, is that Temperance Overton married William Harris on the deck of the ship in which she came on 24 Nov. 1670 at Yorktown. ("Major Robert Harris of New Kent Co.", THE VIRGINIA GENEALOGIST, V. ..., p. 195 ff.) The following records at the Land Office of Virginia verify that some Overtons were in Virginia beginning ca. 1663. Several of these entries pertain to transactions of William Overton. 1. 21 Aug 1663 - Overton, Francis & Charlton, Wm., 410 A on the S. side of the Rappahannock --- backing land of David Fox. Patent No. 5, p. 459. 2. 18 Mar 1663/4 - Overton, Roger & Lary, John, [old] Rappahannock Co., 18 Mar 1663/4, 100 A Begin & c on Swamp ground under the hills side & adjoining to a parcel of land formerly belonging to James Ganall & now in possession of Overton & Lary [patent omitted in error]. [This would place this land in Northern Neck Virginia.] Whether these Overtons in Northern Neck Virginia are related to those in Tidewater Virginia is open to question. 3. 23 Apl 1681 - Overton, Wm. & Jones, Evan - New Kent Co., 4,600 A on freshes --- so. side of Pamunky River, Patent 7, p. 78. See CAVALIERS & PIONEERS, V. II, pp. 218-19; Overton & Jones transported 92 persons, including Elizabeth Overton and several persons named Jones, probably all relatives. This person is more probably the father of Temperance as the Harrises as well as the Overtons were located on or near the Pamunky River. 4. 23 Oct 1690 - Overton, Wm. & Lydall, John - New Kent Co. (to be equally divided between them) - 837 A. above the main fork of Pamunkey R. next above a dividend of land granted Jonathan Newell & Ambros. Clara late in the tenure of Samuel Ousteen [Overton?], Patent 8, p. 121. 5. 20 Feb 1723 - Overton, James - Hanover Co. - 400 A. on the N. side the S. fork of Elk Crk. Patent 11, p. 323. 6. 7 Jan 1725 - Overton, Wm. (son of Saml) Hanover Co. - 400 A on both sides the South & North fork of Elk Creek adjoining John Ragland's line. Patent 12, p. 335 In St. Paul's Vestry Book, Hanover Co., VA, not only do we find William Harris, church warden in 1722, but also "Mr. James Overton," was admitted as vestryman the same year. Later there is reference to lands of Samuel Overton and James Overton. Some later Overtons are found in Hanover Co. Land Book of 1782, St. Martin's Parish gives these names: Col. Sam Overton's 1428 A was put at 20 [pds] = 14.5.7 Wm. Overton's 1096 A was put at 20 [pds] = 14.5.7 (Rosewell Page, HANOVER COUNTY, ITS HISTORY & LEGENDS, privately publ. 1926; William & Mary Swem Library F232 H3P13) Overton Harris 1080 A was put at 16 [pds] = 8.12.0. (He most probably is NOT our ancestor of the same name, who died in Madison Co., KY in 1827. Overton Harris of Maadison Co., KY was a son of Christopher Harris, formerly of Albemarle Co. and Louisa Co., VA. Christopher, also of Madison Co., KY, was a son of Major Robert Harris, and thus a grandson of William Harris and Temperance Overton.) Temperance Overton Harris is said to have been the mother of thirteen children, but there is much disagreement about the names of these children and the number. Refer to Virginia Armistead Nelson, "Genealogical Notes on Keziah Harris Nelson Who Lived in Hanover County, Virginia, in the 18th Century," in GENEALOGIES OF VIRGINIA FAMILIES, VOLUME II, p. 756 ff. Give the compilers credit for their work--an excellent genealogical practice and a requirement for lineage societies!!!

1. [HH] William Harris, Brother of Christopher Harris, d. ca 1777
2. Dear Pat, You wrote, in part: Who was Christophers Harris, father and mother, do you have the name of his brothers and sisters. I descend from William Harris wife unknown, father and mother unknown, William had land in different places, but the last was in Prince Edward County, land he bought from Caleb Baldwin, his sons we know of are Ralph,Graves and George, we know that Ralph and Graves married sisters daughters of John Baldwin and Sussanah, of Prince Edward County. Born around 1730 in Virginia and died in 1799. Response: Welcome to the club of persons hunting Harrises--many with the same names!! You will not be interested in William Harris, brother of Christopher Harris, who apparently died without heirs. This deed confirms that William has died, and his widow and his brother Christopher and Christopher's wife, Agnes nee McCord are selling the land: The name of the widow of William Harris--Elizabeth--appears in a 1777 deed in Albemarle Co Deed Bk 1776-1782, p. 56-58. Abstracted, the deed reads: 8 May 1777 between Christopher Harris and Agnes, his wife, and Elizabeth Harris, the widow of William Harris deced. all of Albemarle Co. to Thomas Garth - two parcels of land 150 acres on N. side of Mechum's River and 336 acres on both sides of Mecham's River ... Albemarle Co. Old Line .. John Michie's ln.... said Elizabeth his widow and said Christopher his Brother and Heir, and said Elizabeth his Widow and said Christopher his Brother and Heir .. Elizabeth .. possessed of one third part of each of the parcels of land as of her Dower of the Estate ... and Christopher .. as brother and Heir to said William ... remaining two thirds of each of the parcels and is also entitled to a Reversion after the death of said Elizabeth whensoever the same shall happen... Now the said Christopher Harris and Agnes his Wife and said Elizabeth in consideration of ... 100 pounds .. convey to Thomas Garth in fee simple ... two tracts of land containing by estimation 486 acres. (no witnesses recorded) Christopher Harris Agness Harris Elizabeth Harris (Adapted from Ruth & Sam Sparacio, ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VIRGINIA DEEDS 1776-1778 [McLean, VA: The Antient Press, 1997] pp. 27-29) Suggestion: If you live near a large city or University library, try to find their online catalog and see if you can locate these volumes: Netti Schreiner-Yantis & Florine S. Love, The 1787 Census of Virginia (You can get the ISBN and publisher from the Fam Hist Library Catalog online at www.familysearch.org) These volumes are a compilation of all the 1787 personal property (not real property) tax lists of Virginia (which included Kentucky and what is now West Virginia) and they are excellent people-finders if your ancestors were living in Virginia or Kentucky or whatever else Virginia claimed in 1787. But with a name like William Harris you are going to find many persons with that name. But, if like my ancestor, your ancestor owned property in several counties, you may find him listed at least twice. Perhaps his sons were old enough to be listed--a chance you take in genealogy!!! Happy hunting! E.W.Wallace

1. [HH] Tyree Harris of Caswell Co., North Carolina
2. This appeared in a post in the last day or so. I have quoted only a part of the original post: According to the History of Albermarle County in Virginia by Rev Edgar Woods in 1901. pg. 221. "One of the early settlers on Doyle's River was Robert Harris. He obtained patents for nearly three thouseand acres in that vicinity, his first entry having been made in 1750. His death took place in 11765. He and his wife Mourning had ten children, Christopher, Robert, Tyree, James, William, Lucy, the wife of William Shelton, Sarah, the wife of John Rodes, _____ the wife of William Dalton, Mourning, the wife of John Jouett, and Elizabeth, the wife of William Crawford, and mother of William H Crawford, United States Senator from Georgia, Minister to France" (pg. 221) Sons: "Robert was a Captain in the Revolutionary service, and removed to Surry county, North Carolina. William died in 1776, and Christopher in 1794...James died in 1792. Response: I wish to make a few corrections to the above. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the information about the Dabneys, as I do not descend from that family. I have not included that information here. I do, however, descend from Christopher Harris, son of Major Robert Harris of both Louisa Co. and of Albemarle Co., VA. I also descend from Christopher's second wife, Agnes McCord, who survived her husband. Tyree Harris, son of Robert Harris and his wife Mourning [Glen?] of Louisa and Albemarle Cos., VA died in Caswell Co., NC and not in Rockingham Co., NC. Will of Tyree Harris In his will, made 1 Sep 1786 and recorded in Caswell Co., NC will book B-162, Jan 1787 Tyree named as executors his son Tyree and his son Simpson as well as his son-in-law, Cornelius Dabney.+ His children were Nancy Abercrombie; Frances, wife of Cornelius Dabney; sons Tyree, Simpson, Robert (to receive land in Rockingham Co. on Little Troublesome Cr*.) Other daughters were Ede Harris (wife of Duke Williams), Liddy Harris. He named a grandson William Chapman Abercromby. According to this will in Caswell Co., his son Robert was to receive land in Rockingham Co. Whether Robert migrated there, I cannot say definitively. It appears from the court records of Caswell Co. that several of these children, probably by Tyree's second wife, the former Mary Ann Simpson, were underage: Major Robert Harris had only four sons, according to his will: Concerning Robert Harris [the father of Tyree]: His four sons were Robert, Jr., William, Tyre(e), and Christopher, as named in will made in Albemarle Co., VA. He had a son-in-law named James Harris, which confuses the genealogy. It seems he had another son-in-law Joel Crawford, as a deed of gift appears in Amherst Co. DB B-51, dated 20 May 1765, in which Robert Harris of Fredericksville Parish, Albemarle Co., gives to his son-in-law Joel Crawford two slaves: Lewis, a boy, and Juliany, a girl. I believe Robert Harris's will, as recorded in Albemarle Co. appears in the archives of this rootsweb. It was posted in early March 2003. His will is also recorded in Louisa Co., probably because he owned land in both jurisdictions, and those probates were in two jurisdictions. 18 June 1765. I August 1765. Son Christopher to have 40 acres of land in Albemarle County, known as "Bears Cornfield." After decease of wife, son William to have all land I now hold in Albemarle County. Sons, Robert, Tyre and William Harris to have slaves. Wife Mowrning (Mourning) to have use of all lands during her life. Son William [who was underage] to be under direction of son-in-law John Rodes. Exrs: sons-in-law John Rodes and William Shelton. Wit: Daniel Maupin, John Mullins, Jr, William Maupin and Connerly Mullins. ( J. Estelle Stewart King, ABSTRACTS of WILLS, INVENTORIES, AND ADMINISTRATION ACCOUNTS OF ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VA, 1748-1800, p. 16.) I hope this information leads others to seek the documents pertaining to this family. Question: Are there any subscribers who are descended from the younger Robert Harris, whose wife was Lucretia Brown, daughter of Benjamin Brown? E.W.Wallace

2. Ira, Maynard (Minyard) Harris was the son of Edward Harris, ca. 1706-1782 of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, who moved to Lunenburg County, Virginia in the 1740's. Edward Harris is later found in Charlotte County, Virginia and Burke County, North Carolina. James E. 3. Barbara, you raised one of the questions I have... Was Isham Harris' wife Martha Rowland or Martha Mable (or Mable Martha) Greene? The family records that were passed to me state that Isham's wife was Martha Rowland, daughter of William Rowland of Bute Co., NC. However, there are no sources accompanying these records. So, that's one of the facts I have on my list to things to check out. Isham Harris' will names his wife "Martha", which proves nothing. I hope to be able to find William Rowland's will, and hope it will name his son-in-law. Also, I will check deeds, etc. to see if I can find a wife listed. I've seen both ladies listed as Isham's wife - often with sources for the fact. I'm wondering if he was married twice. If so, which children go with which wife... And, as Jack said, these people tended to use the same names. I'm wondering how many Isham Harrises there were in Bute Co.! If anyone knows the answer to this, please let us know! Otherwise, I'll keep this on my "do list". I'm working on another branch of my family right now - the Smiths from Gloucester, VA - with more missing links and questions than the Harrises. I "should" move to the Harrises while I have all of you at hand to help fill in the pieces! :) Thanks for all the input and info! This is a great group - most helpful! Caroline
