Source: COLONIAL SURRY Pages 106-107 by John B. Boddie Genealogical Publishing Co. The case of Matthew Swan was finally brought before the Council and General Court of Virginia on the afternoon of April 6, 1674 and settled as follows: "It is ordered that the order of Surry Court Against the mutinuss Psons he Confirmed and that Mathew Swan the ringleader of them, who was bound over to the Court be fined Two Thousand pounds of tobacco and Caske and that all fines of the Psons goe towards the ffort at James Citty And that they pay all Just Costs and Charges." (Minutes of Council and General Court, p. 367.) This however, did not end the matter, for there is always a court of public opinion to which even dictators sometimes bow. This action caused so much resentment among the colonists that Governor Berkeley found it advisable to remit the fines which he finally did on September 23, 1674. (W.M. 23, p. 122) It is significan that these events occurred a full two years before the outbreak of the Rebellion, and the case indicates the discontent of the people and their sullen attitude toward their rulers. Only Lawnes Creek Parish men were involved in the above. When the actual rebellion broke out, most of those involved with Bacon --- in fact, a very large majority --- were inhabitants of Southwark, the other parish in Surry. Perhaps the spirit of the Lawnes Creek men had been broken by the condemnation of Matthew Swan and his colleagues. Matthew Swan, the ringleader of this protest against high taxes, has many descendants in Virginia and the South. In 1675 he married Mrs. Mary Spiltimber, widow of Anthony Spiltimber and daughter of Robert Harris. His will was dated December 14, 1702 and probated January 5, 1702/. He mentioned daughter, Elizabeth, wife of John Drew, daughter, Sarah; Elizabeth, daughter of John Drew; son-in-law, John Drew; daughter, Mary, wife of William Phillips; and grandson, John Phillips. Executors were Jonn Drew and Sarah Swann. Witnesses were Arthur Allen, William Chambers, John Allen, and Robert Ruffin. Children: I. Elizabeth, m. (1) John Drew, d. 1703. (See Drew) (2) John Sugars. (No children.) II. Mary, m. William Phillisp of Surry County, Va., who in his will dated Feb. 14, 1720/21, probated April 19, 1721, mentioned wife, Mary; sons, John, William, Swann, and Mathew Phillips (the three last named under 16 years of age); and daughters, Anne, Mary, and Elizabeth Phillips. Executors were wife, Mary, and sons, William and Swann Phillips. Witnesses: Joseph Wattell, William Newsum, Carter Crafford. III. Sarah, m. Carter Crafford (1682?-1743). (See Crafford) Hope this answers some more questions about our wonderful Harris family. Ira L. Harris III Evv., In.

Hi Ira, There is a Howell Harris listed in the Dickson County, TN records in 1824. Also, James Goodrich migrated from Anson Co N. C. to this same area. in 1807. However, this Polly Goodrich who married Howell Harris may have possibly been a sister to James Goodrich. She is not named in his will of 1818 (executed in 1824) Sarah
Fran, No, I didn't. I found this book on a sale rack at my local genealogical library (they are having "Midnight Madness" -- open til midnight, workshops, book sale). Since I don't have a direct Harris line in Indiana, I simply xeroxed out the Harris' and put the book back on the sale rack. That was the only thing I saw by her. Ira

Looking for someone with like photos of Harris ladies or male Harris photos taken in Shreveport in the 1860's by J.H.C. Ahrens. A small photo album given to my grandfather as a child in CA in 1864 contains photos taken (or copied) in Shreveport of a Mrs. Martha Harris and Miss Minnie Harris. Mrs. Martha Harris is young to middle aged, with dark hair. Miss Minnie Harris appears to be a teenager, with dark hair and well dressed. They do not appear in any Harris family census groupings in and around Shreveport. My great grandmother Hypagia/Hypatia Harris was born in VA about 1828, married in Natchez in 1846, was in CA by 1850, and died in 1863. Another photo is of Angie Taintor, who was Angelina Belinda Harris, born in Pittsylvania Co., VA in 1819. She married in Madison Co., MS to Giles Taintor and moved to Shreveport in the 1840's. No male Harris names are known. Liz

Ira Harris has been posting information on Harris-Hunters and Harris-ColonialVA concerning pre-Revolutionary Virginia land patents which pertain to Harrises. At the same time, he is asking about relationships of these persons. The following deed indicates that two Harris men in Lunenburg Co. were known to each other, but it does not state the relationship. Since a consideration (money or goods) is involved, it appears they were NOT father and son, since frequently there is a phrase, *for love and affection* -- but not always. (I have an exception in my colonial Goochland Co. family). Lunenburg Co. DB 2, p. 57: Jul 3, 1757 from William Harris of L[unenburg] & in Cumberland Parish, to Samuel Harris of same, 60 pds., grants 1 plantation & island of 70 acres, it having been patented by William Harris on Apr 5, 1748, and bounded by Stanton River between Byrd's Island and Cargill's Island. Recorded Jul 3, 1750; Judith, wife of William relinquished dower. (TLC Genealogy, LUNENBURG COUNTY, VIRGINIA DEEDS, 1746-1751 [Miami Beach, FL: TLC Genealogy, 1990 & 1992], p. 33) These men also appear as witnesses to several other deeds. So does a Ben [not Benjamin] Harris. Sam. Harris also appears in July 1750 as executor of the estate of Adler David. To those Harris-Hunters who are looking for Claiborne associations with Harrises, several Claiborne males, namely L. Claiborne Jr. and Thomas Claibore [sic] and Ben Harris are witnesses to a deed DB 2-225, Jan 1, 1750 William Reed of Lunenburg to John Ruffin of Surry Co. And that's all I know about these Lunenburg Co. Harrises of early date. E.W.Wallace

My interest is a possible connection to my Virginia born great grandmother Hypagia/Hypatia and her sister Angelina Harris, who was born in Pittsylvania Co., VA in 1819. Angelina and her family moved from MS in the 1840's to Shreveport. Hypagia married Daniel Whelpley in 1846 and went on to CA by 1850. A family album has a photo of "Mrs. Martha Harris" taken or copied in Shreveport in the 1860's. Also have a photo, from Shreveport, of a Miss Minnie Harris. Both are a mystery. Unfortunately, I have no male names to trace. Liz Dear Liz, I think you are asking too many questions at once. You have to break down the problem into little bits, and ask yourself, what one problem do I want to solve today? If you are searching for an answer in Texas, then search the locality where your ancestor lived. Do not try to jump state lines just yet. Do a time line and figure out where the person was for each event in his life. If you don't know the events, then get cracking!!! Where did he vote? Was he in the Civil War? Which side? When was each kid born? Did he pay taxes? Did he own land? And so on. You have some children's names. Note where they were born, according to the census. I note that the father has one birthplace, and the mother has another birthplace. Were they married in the birthplace of the mother? Or did they get married in Texas? Or do you know? Censuses can tell us a whole lot, but sometimes they are wrong. I was studying a census the other day, and noted that the kids, who were not widely spaced, were each born in a different state!!! That provides me with some clues--I have to search several localities, but only a river divided the localities--but records are different!!! Break your problem into little parts. Do not try to connect folks unless you have done a thorough job on each family. Otherwise, you are spinning your wheels. You may be learning a lot--but maybe not what you set out to learn. There are some good guides for research in each state in the Union, plus for many foreign, especially European, countries on this website: www.familysearch.org There are also some census forms on that website which you can download. Also check the 1880 census which is also on that website. It's somewhat tricky to use--don't give it too much information. The computer gets confused, and the misspellings are great and many! Please study the Fam Hist Library Catalog--the link is on the lower right side--for each locality and determine what may be available on film (books you cannot borrow unless they have been filmed) for each locality. Then find an LDS center near your home, call to find out when they are open, and get acquainted with that haven for genealogists. Oh, and check out ALL the guides on that website, but do not DEPEND on the vast databases on that website. There is so much conflicting information for each person that it makes your head swim. Occasionally, there is some GOOD information, but do not rely on it!!! I hope you find your Harrises!!! Some of us are still looking after many decades!! E.W.Wallace

Harris/Red River, TX Does anyone connect with Henry B. Harris, who was in Red River Co., TX by 1846 and died there March 23, 1886? According to census records, Henry was born in VA. His date of birth in the Bluff Cemetery record or tombstone shows as August 3, 1813. Henry's wife is Margaret, possibly Margaret West. She was born in TN c. 1820-1822 and died Nov. 6, 1876 in Red River Co.
