I believe the David you are asking about is David T. Harris son of Thomas. David was born in Feb. 7, 1826 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. His son Andrew Johnson Harris actually grew up close to where I was born and raised. Of course he was years before my time and I didn't know it until I began researching the family. I am sending to your email a lengthy .RTF file with several generations of info. Look forward to corresponding with you. Finally there is a question I have some information about. This is information I collected from many different sources in the search for my Thomas Harris from VA. So far I have had no luck, but I have learned about some other Harris families. I will try to give my sources, but I may miss some inadventently. Richard J (or I) Harris who married Phebe Harris was the s/o Richard Harris who died leaving a will in Cumberland in 1817. According to a descendant, Sue Hawks, Richard married Sarah Unk. STATE UPDATES Here's what's making family history headlines in Ohio, Texas, Maine and New Jersey: * If you haven't ordered copies of your Ohio ancestors'vital records, do it soon. As early as July 1, Ohio counties will charge an extra $5 for obtaining certified copies of birth and death records. That means certified copies will cost at least $12, because counties currently must charge at least $7. This price hike stems from a proposed state budget bill-pending approval by state legislators--that would require the fee to help fund digitization of vital records. The bill also would prevent the issuance of uncertified copies of vital records--now available for mere pennies-in order to curb fraudulent use of the records. * Proposed budget cuts threaten to close the University of Texas' Center for Studies in Texas History, a genealogical gem in Austin. The center works with the renowned Texas State Historical Association to publish the "Southwestern Historical Quarterly," now in its 107th year of publication, and "The New Handbook of Texas," a six-volume guide to Texas people, places and history that's now searchable online at http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online. Learn more about the Texas State Historical Association and Center for Studies in Texas History at http://www.tsha.utexas.edu * Good news for Maine researchers! Rather than cutting programs--as every other state seems to be doing of late-legislators are working on the New Century Community Bond, a provision to allocate $4 million for cultural improvements. The bond would provide $500,000 to the Maine Historical Society to upgrade the Maine Memory Network, an online database of the state's historical documents, including letters, journals, photographs, maps, and sound and video files. Visit the Maine Memory Network Web site at http://www.mainememory.net, and urge your local legislators to support the New Century Community Bond. * There's even more good news for New Jersey researchers: The New Jersey Division of Archives & Records Management has launched a browsable online catalog of its 27,000 cubic feet and 25,000 reels of historical and genealogical records at http://www.njarchives.org/links/catalog.html. Now, you can see what the archives holds before planning a trip to Trenton. Plus, the catalog includes a New Jersey county map with information about when each county was formed, as well as a place-names search. *** Reprinted with permission from Family Tree Magazine Email Update, copyright 2003 F&W Publications Inc. Do you have an exact page (or exact pages) of the Virginia Magazine of History & Biography that you want? If so, you can write to either to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and request copies (there is a form, I believe, on www.familysearch.org - look for a link to Forms) OR you can write to the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne Indiana. Ask your public librarian to get you the exact address--or look for their website, which I do not know--it must be among my LONG list of several hundred websites. Use a search engine such as www.google.com or a newish one www.kartoo.com If you do not know the exact pages of this publication which you want, then I suggest this: Are you near a large genealogical library? If so, call them up and ask if they have several volumes of "Swem's Index", more formally known as Virginia Historical Index. It is conceivable that it MAY be at a large university or community college near you--anything is worth a try when a genealogist is on the trail of ancestors. (I have lots of material overlooked by college students - which are chuck full of genealogy - a bit at a time, but all useful. Books are generally shelved in Local History, but also check Immigration, and plain old genealogy. If the library uses the Library of Congress cataloging, you will find local history under books whose call numbers begin with F; immigration under Z; genealogy under CS; English records begin with DA and so on. Prowl around the open shelves and see what you can find. They may even have the Virginia Mag which you are searching for.) If you are near an LDS family history center, call them up and ask for their opening hours (and closing hours, of course). At the same time, ask if they have a microfiche collection. If they do, chances are they have Swem's Index (aka Virginia Historical Index) on 27 microfiches, No. 6046961. According to the online catalog of the FHL in Salt Lake City, this index is part of the microfiche project for FHCs and probably they were furnished with this index when the center opened. If you are near an LDS center, also ask whether they have hundreds of microfiche called the AIS = Accelerated Indexing System. This is a comprehensive census index for the whole US through 1850 census. There are some mortality schedules also. Each census year is called a Search. The earliest censuses, including some early tax lists, are on Search 1. Each Search generally (not always) is a subsequent census. There should be a free four-page index explaining this census. If not, there should be a notebook explaining the use of AIS. This is a tool which many professionals use to locate a family when they are beginning a search for a new family. Otherwise, dive in and teach yourself. You will find errors in duplication, omissions, misspellings, etc. But still it (AIS) is a useful tool. The AIS is flawed, but if a tool works, it works. It is a good way to pick up migration trails for your folks. If you know where your 2nd great-grandfather was in 1850, start with that census, and then work your way backwards in time. (I should have done that with more of my people--then I would have discovered [perhaps] that my migratory ancestors, from MD to NC to KY had spent a few years in TN. Oh, well, live and learn!!!) Dear Harris Hunters, Concerning some early marriages of Pittsylvania Co., VA, here is some information I have gathered concerning Agnes Payne. Her first husband was Robert Harris. She subsequently married Marmaduke Williams of Caswell Co., NC. I have some information on Marmaduke Williams, but not a great deal on Robert Harris, son of Tyree Harris of early Caswell Co., NC, formerly of Orange Co., NC, and formerly of Albemarle Co., VA and formerly of Louisa Co., VA Submitted by E.W.Wallace ROBERT HARRIS, son of TYREE HARRIS and 2nd wife Mary Ann Simpson. (b. ca 1768, probably in Orange Co., NC; d. bef Dec 1798, Caswell Co., NC) Refer to the biography of his father Tyree Harris concerning Robert's guardianship Oct 1787 (Caswell Co. court minutes). His brother, Sampson [Simpson] Harris also choose the same guardian in 1787. (If Robert had children by Agnes, please share with Harris-Hunters. I may find more information.) E.W.Wallace AGNESS HARRIS NEE PAYNE. (1775-1850 dob unverified) According to a long-ago query, 1896, in VIRGINIA MAGAZINE OF HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY, v. 3, concerning the Williams family, Hon. Marmaduke Williams (see Wheeler's HISTORY OF NORTH CAROLINA, PART II, p. 78), "a great-grandson of the emigrant above [John Williams I and wife Mary]," married Mrs. Agnes Harris nee Payne, the widow of Robert Harris (son of Tyra Harris and Mary Ann Simpson). She was a cousin of Mrs. Dolly Payne Madison. They had, among other children, one named Madison Williams and one named Dolly Payne Williams (the writer's grandmother). Can any one give exact relationship to Mrs. Madison, names of Agnes (Payne) Williams' parents, and sources for a full account of the Payne family?" /s/ Descendant." Supposition is that this unidentified query was submitted by Thomas McAdory Owen, Sr. (1866-1920), of Alabama State Archives, who was conducting much research of the Williams family during this time period. Rather recently in the 1990s some of Owen's notes on Granville Co. (but not Caswell Co.) residents have been published by Southern Historical Press. The book is entitled (loosely) History and Genealogies of Granville Co., NC. Maud Carter Clement in THE HISTORY OF PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VIRGINIA has a footnote on page 144 concerning the Payne family. Agnes Payne was one of several children of Robert Payne whose will was probated at Pittsylvania Courthouse 19 Dec 1785. His wife was Anne Burton of Goochland Co. The info does not state the date of marriage of Agnes to Marmaduke Williams, and it provides no info re Marmaduke. [Lynchburg, VA: J. P. Bell, Inc., 1929) Quoting from the lineage of Thomas McAdory Owen, Jr. (1894-?) in Virkus's The Compendium of American Genealogy, , Vol. V, Agnes Payne's lineage is linked with that of Dolly Madison. Agnes's father was Robert Payne. Her grandfather was Josiah. This is according to "The Payne Family of Goochland County, Etc." as appears in GENEALOGIES OF VIRGINIA FAMILIES IV, He-S (Family Archive Viewer, CD 162), p. 638. According to the history of the Payne family, cited above, Robert Payne removed to Pittsylvania county. He married, July 22, 1762, Ann Burton, of Goochland. His will was proved May 16, 1791, in Pittsylvania County. At any rate, these Payne males were in Caswell Co. in 1777, at its formation: Robert Payne; John Payne. (Katherine Kerr Kendall, CASWELL COUNTY, 1777-1877 HISTORICAL ABSTRACTS OF MINUTES OF CASWELL COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA [Raleigh, NC: Published by author, 1976], p. 1) MARMADUKE WILLIAMS. (1774-1850) (M. Oct 1798 Caswell Co., NC to Agnes Payne Harris) From BIOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY OF U. S. CONGRESS, p. 2059 "Williams, Marmaduke (cousin of John Williams, of Tennessee, Lewis Williams, and Robert Williams), a Representative from North Carolina; born in Caswell County, NC, April 6, 1774; completed preparatory studies; studied law; was admitted to the bar and practiced; member of the State senate in 1802; elected as a Republican to the Eighth, Ninth, and Tenth Congresses (March 4, 1803-March 3, 1809); was not a candidate for renomination; moved to Mississippi Territory in 1810 and later to Huntsville, Madison County, Ala; in 1818 settled in Tuscaloosa, Ala; delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1819 and the same year was an unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Alabama; member of the Stqte house of representatives 1821-1839; judged of the Tuscaloosa County Court 1832-1842; died in Tuscaloosa, Ala., October 29, 1850; interment in Greenwood Cemetery." You wrote: John Watts wife, Lucy Dalton Watts, received the pension for her husband. On that form she claimed her two son's, Tyree and Thomas Watts, had died without children. Thomas Watts married Sarah Head, and moved to Tenn. and Kentucky with the head family. I beleive Tyree and Johnston moved to to North Carolina and Kentucky. Lucy Watts's mom was Rachel Harris. Lucy's father was William Dalton. Also, I found a William Dalton as a Cherokee trader in South Carolina extremely early. Do we know for sure how far back our Dalton line can be proven Response: I cannot answer your first paragraph. Here is a suggestion about your last paragraph: Have you searched the land grants (really, patents before the Revolution) on the Library of Virginia website? (I prefer the seven volumes of Cavaliers and Pioneers---because they are indexed by surname, by watercourse, by neighbor, etc.) A land patent in Virginia may give you a clue as to how early Daltons can be traced--at least in Virginia. Many Carolinians came from Virginia. Outside the lowlands of South Carolina, there was not much early settlement in upcountry South Carolina. Because North Carolina has no good seaports until you get to Wilmington (Cape Fear country), most early North Carolinians came from Virginia. Western NC is another matter entirely. Since land patents in Virginia (and later Kentucky) were a somewhat lengthy process, add approximately seven years (a guess) prior to that date which you find in the first Dalton land patent. First you got a warrant from the government (probably at Williamsburg), then you got a survey, and then you presented this to the Government again, and your land was patented. Dalton is NOT my line, so I do not collect them, unless a few are in the neighborhood where the Harrises were. Here are some notes, which I may have already sent you. Maybe you can pick up some clues from these notes: WILLIAM DALTON. (married by 1751, suggesting birth ca 1730 or earlier) The following deed shows Dalton's relationship to Robert Harris of Louisa Co. and sometimes of Albemarle Co.: 25 Nov 1751 I Robert Harris of the Parish of Fredericksville in County of Albemarle for divers good causes and considerations me thereunto moving but more especially for the natural love and affection I have and beareth my Son in Law William Dalton and to his heirs two negro slaves to wit Rhodo a girl and Sampson a Boy and their Increase.. Robert Harris Presence Thomas Walker, Mildred Walker (Deeds adapted from Ruth & Sam Sparacio, DEED ABSTRACTS OF ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VIRGINIA, DEED BOOK 3, 12 FEBRUARY 1761-9 AUGUST 1764 [McLean, VA: The Antient Press, 1988], p. 33) Immediately following the deed of Robert Harris is one executed by Samuel Dalton and his wife to their son William Dalton. 12 January 1762 between Samuel Dalton Senr. and heir Wife Anne of one part and their Son William Dalton, of the other part all that piece of land lying in the county of Albemarle and formerly Louisa and Fredericksville Parish on both sides of the North Branch of the North Fork of James River above the Little Mountains containing estimated 404 acres ... survey taken up and pattented by said Samuel Dalton.. Wolf Trap Branch.... together with one Negro man Slave named Joseph. Samuel Dalton Presence George Martin, Isaac Davis, Thomas Burrus, John Henslee (Ibid., p. 33) Dalton was in Albemarle Co. in 1762. His name appears in DB-? -p. 190, 8 Jul 1762 Jno. Mitchell, Great Britain, and Andrew Shepherd, Orange Co., factor, and merchant, to Wm. Dalton for 30 pds, 277 acres adj. Jno. Enniss. From subsequent deeds on the same date, recorded on adjoining pages, we learn that these same parties bought other lands in Albemarle Co., probably from Dalton's neighbors. The grantors were Gabriel Maupin, William Keaton, Jr. Other Daltons in Albemarle Co. One William Dalton was the son of Samuel Dalton. Samuel patented land in Louisa Co. on the same date, 12 Jan 1746/47, that Christopher Harris patented land in that same county. They were not near neighbors, it seems. Pat. Bk 28-19 Samuel Dalton, 404 acs. Louisa Co. on both sides of the North br. of the North fork of James Riv. beyond the Mountains, Beg. on Wolf Trap Br., on S. side of Jacobs Run; 12 Jan 1746/47 2 pds. (Adapted from Dennis Ray Hudgins, CAVALIERS & PIONEERS, V. V, p. 304) In Albemarle Co. Wills & Deeds 1748-1752 there is reference in a deed 1752 to "Robert Dalton's old field," north side of Rivanna by Lynch's Ford, line of Merriwether, John Clark's moiety. Some Louisa Co., VA deeds show deeds of Saml. Dalton of Fredericksville Par., Louisa Co., wherein his wife Anne relinquished her dower. (DB A-p. 279-280) At a Fredericksville vestry held probably in 1767, there is indication of the location of Dalton's land. "Order'd that Isaac Davis and David Spradlin do procession all the lands the upper side of the River between the Road Crossing at Wm. Daltons the Orange line and upward to Wm. Goldens." (Rosalie Edith Davis, FREDERICKSVILLE PARISH VESTRY BOOK, 1742-1787, Vol. I [Manchester, MO: privately printed, 1978], p 85) Several Daltons filed Revolutionary "Publick Claims." Those from Albemarle were David, Samuel, and William Dalton. Those from Pittsylvania were David and John. There was a William Dalton from Frederick Co. 1783 At a vestry held for Fredericksville Parish at Charlottesville on the first day of March 1783: Present Doctor Thomas Walker, Isaac Davis, Nicholas Lewis, William Sims, Doctor George Gilmer, James Minor, William Dalton & Robert Mechie, Vestrymen. (Davis, Fredericksville Par, p. 122) At that vestry meeting, William Dalton was one of those ordered to "possession" the lands between the river by William Carrs and up the road to Durrets lower line, thence a Cross to Isaac Davis's lower corner and so down to the beginning. (Davis, p. 126) The 1787 tax list for Albemarle Co., VA lists the following Dalton males: "Self" refers to person charged with tax. Col 1=No. of males above 16 and under 21 Col 2=Black above 16 Col 3=Black under 16 Col 4=Horses, mares. colts & mules Col 5=Cattle In this transcription the name is spelled Dolton, not Dalton; however, these are the only ones of this name in Albemarle Co. Dolton, William (Capt.) self 2-7-7-11-16 Dolton, Samuel William Dalton [person charged with tax] Dolton, William self 0-0-0-2-5 Dolton, Isham William Dalton [person charged with tax] ............ From Albemarle Co. Wills, there is another Dalton: Dolton, Timothy. 3 Oct 1755. 10 Feb 1767. Of county of Louisa. After decease of himself and wife Elizabeth all estate to son William. Exr: son William Dolton. Wit: Giles Rodgers and Beasley Meredith. (J. Estelle Stewart King, ABSTRACTS of WILLS, INVENTORIES, AND A DMINISTRATION ACCOUNTS OF ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VA, 1748-1800) Migrations to Madison Co., Kentucky? We lack information on the extended Dalton family; however, it seems that some descendants may have migrated to Madison Co., KY as the names of Daltons appear in the early marriage records. One or two appear earlier in Caswell Co., NC deeds. Possible descendants in Madison Co., KY were: 1. Isham/Isom Dalton (wf. Elizabeth), Marriage records seem to indicate he was: a. Father of Caty Dalton (m. 1818 to James Lainhart; David Dalton, bm.) b. Father of Lucy Dalton (m. 1812 to Jesse Todd) c. Possible father of David Dalton (see a. above) d. Father of Sally Dalton (m. 1822 William F. Daughterty; Elizabeth Dalton, mother of bride gave consent, indicating Isham was probably deceased) 2. Polly Dalton, possibly a sister of David Dalton; he served as bm to her marriage Jeremiah Todd 1817. (Comment: A number of Dalton males are found in Deed Bk 1 of Pittsylvania Co. ca 1768-1769: John Dalton, Robert Dalton, Jr., David. Refer to Lucille C. Payne and Neil G. Payne, PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VIRGINIA DEED BOOKS 1, 2, AND 3 (SLC 975.5665 R2p)) Is there a Dalton rootsweb?
