Ira Harris has posted On Harris ColonialVA some abstracted North Carolina wills, among them an abstract of the will of one Matthew Jouett. The Jouett family is closely associated with Harris family in Albemarle Co. and perhaps previously in other counties. And, of course, one of Major Robert Harris's sons, Tyree Harris, migrated to North Carolina--Orange Co., ca 1763, part of which became Caswell Co., NC in 1777. Some comments about this Matthew Jouett of Caswell Co. MATTHEW JOUETT (grandson of Matthew Jouett the elder of Hanover Co., VA) According to John H. Gwathmey, TWELVE VIRGINIA COUNTIES WHERE THE WESTERN MIGRATION BEGAN [Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1981] p. 339, Matthew Jouett was a son of John Jouett of Albemarle Co. and his wife Mourning Harris. He was killed in the Battle of Brandywine, as a captain in the Revolution. Reportedly he was commander of 7th Virginia Regiment of Foot. Matthew Jouett had his will probated in Caswell Co., Sept court 1779 (WB A-80). The will names a son named Matthew, as well as a number of other children and a wife named Sarah. The other children were: John, Susannah, Nancy, Polly, Thomas, Betsy, Washington. The executors were his wife and Thomas Brooks, Absaolm Tatom, Richard Moore. Test: Jere Poston, Henry Cobb, Chas. Taylor. (Katherine Kerr Kendall, CASWELL COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA WILL BOOKS 1777-1814... [Baltimore: Clearfield Company, Inc, 1997 reprint of 1979 original], p. 4) I believe Matthew Jouett was awarded bounty land by the State of Virginia, but further research is in order. E.W.Wallace

Some of the family lines are easy to pick out (IOW line for instance), while others are harder to ascertain. If you have noticed, the last several lists of marriages gave Harris' from other counties, who married in that particular county. To really have a good opportunity to find and document our lines, we will probably need to study the whole state of Virginia. The families moved around so much, and borders changed so much, that you find a piece of information in this county, while you might find a piece of information in another county. This is not a new idea, but I think it is probably a good habit to get into when working in Virginia. Ira L. Harris III Evv., In.

You were asking about a Samuel P. Harris. I am not sure this is the answer to your question. I do not have time to do further research at this time. I suggest you do a www.google.com search for Christopher Harris [put in quotation marks], and I believe an undocumented descendancy chart will appear for Christopher Harris. There are some major errors in it, which should be checked against actual Madison Co. records. Much of this chart was based on a flawed genealogy by W. H. Miller, published many decades ago, if not a century ago. Several books of Madison Co. marriage records, cemetery records, court records have been published in the last few years, and the Family History Library in Salt Lake City has MANY films of this early Kentucky county. The deeds make an interesting full-time job!!! E.W.Wallace Rev Nov 2002 SAMUEL HARRIS, SON OF CHRISTOPHER HARRIS. b. 1 Sep 1777 His birthdate, apparently unconfirmed, is taken from DAR application 598925. Those of his siblings and most of the marriages are given, indicating the applicant MAY have used a Bible record. According to a letter from a distant cousin, he died ca. 1840. This needs to be verified. According to marriage records of Madison Co., KY, Samuel Harris lived in Madison Co., KY. He was the father of Agnes McCord Harris who married Milton Oldham in 1831 in Madison Co. (I believe Milton Oldham is found later in the census indexes for Missouri ca 1850 or so.) Questionable: He probably is the Samuel Harris who married Sarah Province, 1 Sep 1795. Her mother was Mary Provine [sic], and Andrew Province was bondsman. More research is needed. Other records, not thoroughly examined, are that his wife was Nancy Wilkerson. More research needs to be conducted. Note that on 2 Sep 1820, John Province married Anne McCord, John McCord, father of bride. The McCords no doubt were related to Agnes McCord Harris, second wife of Christopher Harris, the father of Samuel Harris, the subject of this abbreviated bio.

After the information put on the board yesterday, I got to thinking about how the families moved and their paths of migration. Recently I bought a book of Abstracts of North Carolina Wills by Fred Olds. So I got it out and went looking through it to see if any Harris' or Glenn's showed up. I was surprised at some of the things I found. In regards to the Glenn family this is what I found. ************* Surry County, North Carolina, p. 292 Will Date 1775: Glenn, Tyree, Wife (not named); Thomas, Sukey, Jeremiah, Aggie and Jenny. Will Date 1781: Glenn, James, Wife (not named); Lucy, Susanna, Elizabeth, Nancy, Martha and Thompson. ************** Tryon & Lincoln Counties, North Carolina, p. 173 Will Date 1794: Glenn, John, to Daniel Blotsback *************** Onslow County, North Carolina, p. 230-231 Will Date 1776: Glenn, Hugh, Susanna (wife); Jones and Sarah (children); John and Thomas (brothers). Will Date 1791: Glenn, Margaret, Sarah, Mary and Nathan (children); Thomas Glenn (brother). **************** The two Glenn's from Surry County were part of the previous discussion. Whether or not the other citations fit into the same family, I do not know. This was all of the Glenn's that I found in this source. Ira L. Harris III Evv., In.
Hi, everyone, Forgive my late response to these Culpeper, VA messages-- I have been busy reading census microfilms of my Harris family, and not looking at my mail much... I am very familiar with many lines in the Spotsylvania/ Orange/Culpeper area of Virginia, as that is where my Will Harris came from when he moved to NC just after the Rev War. All in all, researching this area of Virginia has been a highly frustrating experience--having looked under rocks in these (and many other) counties, I have yet to find any document that clearly defines a relationship between any of several Harris men, other than this John Harris, grandson of John KAINS, apparently being the son? or brother? of the Joseph Harris mentioned in the will, along with what seem to be John's sisters, Barbary and Eve. I have been unable to identify where, exactly, this land was--- Comical Run, wherever it was, is no longer named that. Does anyone out there have any document that names this particular stream or know what it is now called? If so, I would greatly appreciate any help. I strongly suspect that KAINS' land may have lain in what is now a county bordering West Virginia---or even in what is now that state. And who were the children of John, and/or children of Joseph? I don't have a clue. Does anyone have these people in any other documents? (Even John Blankenbaker, the gifted and generous Germanna Colony researcher, has expressed curiosity and a little frustration with this KAINS. This appears to be the sole document for him and his little extended family of Harrises...) The lack of further records for this little group is particularly frustrating to me---because there is a very good possibility this bunch MIGHT be ours.) - If David Harris of Culpeper was related to Francis Kirtley, I have found no proof of it in these counties. If they were somehow related, the documentation that would show it, if it still exists, would be found earlier and in another county. (I should state that the Francis KIRTLEY in the documents below, and that was named executor of David HARRIS, was the second of that name in this area of Virginia. Francis KIRTLEY, Sr., died in 1763.) The second Francis reportedly married a daughter of Honorious POWELL; he, along with the STANTON (i.e., Staunton River,) STROTHER, MADISON, JEFFERSON, and MARSHALL families, to name a few, were large landowners in the area that included what is now Shenandoah National Park (Francis KIRTLEY, Sr., at one point, owned at least 20,000 acres.) --- Allow me to share some more history of this area of Virginia (I think it helps put into perspective what a massive area we are talking about here...I apologize to those of you who are uninterested, and you may skip the rest of this mail if you are "not into it"...) I will post HARRIS records for this area in another mail or two (or so,) so those of you who stop reading here but have interest in those records should check them out. - Pam pamstone@digital.net --- I have studied this area a lot, trying to sort out the migrations of Harrises into it, within it, and out of it. - Some other large landowners or grantees of large portions of land for the purpose of group settlement in the 1730's and 1740's in this area of Virginia (which included a very large section of central and western Virginia, as well as a portion of what is now West Virginia) were: - John & Isaac VAN METER, from whom Jost HITE purchased a large portion of their combined 40,000-acre grants (a lot of which he sold to numerous Orange/Culpeper families, as evidenced by many deeds from him in the Orange records.) - William BEVERLEY of Essex Co., VA, with his 118,000+ acres known as the "Mannor of Beverley", most of which was in what later became Augusta Co., VA (which he had jointly patented in 1736 with "Sir John RANDOLPH of the City of Williamsburgh, Knight, John ROBINSON of King and Queen County, and Richard RANDOLPH of Henrico County, Gent" and from those partners Beverley purchased their shares.) He also owned land referred to as "the Octuna Tract"--I don't know whether that was another name for Beverley Manor, or whether it was another tract altogether. Does anyone know? - Andrew ROSS and Morgan BRYAN, who together obtained a grant in 1730 by order of the Governor and the Council of the Virginia Colony for 100,000 acres on which to settle families from Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. ROSS was from Pennsylvania, and a Quaker, BRYAN was from Delaware, and was not---how this partnership came to be is a little mystery all by itself. Ross' own 2,300+ was in what is now Frederick Co., VA, while Bryan's land on which he resided [he owned 4 tracts totalling 2,100+ acres] was in what is now Berkeley Co., WVA, on Mills' Creek. Morgan BRYAN moved from Orange Co., VA to Rowan Co., NC in 1748, and died there in 1763. Numerous histories of this area of the Virginias and of northwest North Carolina incorrectly state that Morgan Bryan's [also as BRYANT] wife died in Virginia, and that his son, Joseph, did, too, and that Morgan himself died in 1793 at his home on the Yadkin River, "The Point". All of this information is wrong, and is caused by a mixing up of generations of Morgan Bryans. [If anyone has Morgan as an ancestor, let me know, and I will share documents on him.] - Morgan ap MORGAN, or "Morgan an", as he later signed himself, was one of the settlers of Ross and Bryan, with 1000 acres, also on Mills Creek in what is now Berkeley Co., WVA. A well-educated Welshman, Morgan was prominent in his adopted town of Christiana, Delaware, and became so in his new home in Orange Co., serving in many public offices. He is said to have left a very large family---probably Morgan Morgan X still lives in that area of West Virginia! - Well, that's it for this one. - Next come the docs! :-) - Pam pamstone@digital.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ira L. Ira and others, If this is a daughter of a Dabney Harris it is surely not the daughter of the Dabney who was the son of Christopher Harris. I agree that this could be a grand daughter of Dabney of Albemarle VA and later Surry NC but I have found nothing to indicate that he ever had a son named Dabney Harris Junior. Surry Co., NC census records indicate Dabney Harris had several sons and daughters living in his household but a son named Christopher is the only name I have seen some proof of. The daughter of Dabney named Sarah that you mentioned is not a name I can confirm but here is some info from a Austin family tree. Benjamin Austin, son of David Austin of Surry Co. NC (I can confirm there was a David Austin in Surry) supposedly married one Sarah Harris, dau of Dabney Harris. In 1930 they were living in Boone Co., MO. This I have not had time to confirm. Solomon Harris as an actual son of Dabney Harris amuses me. My direct line is Solomon Harris of Surry Co., NC who married Nancy Blackwell and they migrated to Garrard Co., KY. I do not know who the parents of Solomon are but have sent numerous emails, concerning Dabney and other Harris males of the correct age, and indicating I was trying to locate a parent for Solomon. So suddenly Solomon has a father. If you have any source info please help me but I suspect that someone has made up a connection. Concerning Susannah Sladen/Sladden/Slatton (depending on which Slatton family tree you are looking at on the internet), I have only seen Sladden/Slatton trees which claim she married a Dabney Harris and so far every time I contact the author for proof I am told the info came from some one, some where but a source is not available. If someone can point me to some proof that Dabney ever married a Susannah please do so. I have collected quite a bit of documentation on Dabney Harris of Surry and Wilkes counties in North Carolina and would gladly share if you want. On Sun, 29 Jun 2003 14:40:54 -0500 (CDT) "Ira L. After posting the previous query information about Dabney Harris, it struck me that this might be the daughter of the son, Dabney. If that is so, then I only know the supposed names of four of the children of Dabney Harris and Susannah Sladen Harris. What do you think? Ira L. Harris III Evv., In.
