Every name index (as well as indexed separately by place, county and slave names). It is extensively documented and footnoted, also accompanied by a comprehensive bibliography. Mr. Brayton explains that, while his book, The Five Thomas Harrises of Isle of Wight County, Virginia (see review TVF, vol 5)was not designated as volume 1, he has now embarked on a series of books relating, not only to the Harris family, but to neighboring and related families in the same area.(see TVF, vol 6)He sorts out the Robert Harrises, then admits Robert Harris of this book did not have male descendants; however, his two daughters deserve recognition. From this he traces their descendants who represent many Southside Virginia and North Carolina families. Through five generations, he presents the families of :Crafford, House, Spiltimber, Sugar, Swann and a number of collateral lines. His research is meticulous and his conclusions drawn from extant records. Where these are not available he has carefully explained his inferences and added the necessary caveats. Mr. Brayton has once again made a major contribution to researchers with his scholarly work. Order from Genealogical Services, John A. Chris, Greetings. There are several of those wills that I would like to look at, especially those in York and Henrico counties. You would probably have to contact the Clerk of the Circuit Court to see about them. I may try to get the phone number of the Clerk at Henrico, and see what I can find out this coming week. IF anyone gets any of these wills it would be wonderful if they would be so kind as to post them on HH or H-COLONIALVA so that others may have access to them. I thought maybe that this would help to possibly clarify some dates and provide some ideas so we could run the family lines through the various counties they were in. For instance, the IOW line: look at the names and dates of IOW, Southampton, Nansemond, Sussex, and Surry. Do they seem to cluster into the IOW line? For instance the Capt. Thomas Harris line: look at Henrico, Chesterfield, etc. Do they seem to cluster into the Captain's line? It is just an idea. Ira
Ira, Is there a place to write for or a site on line to look at these wills? Sure would like to check out some of the names and who their beneficiaries were. Chris MAY YOU ALWAYS WALK WITH ANGELS

Does anyone have any information on Benjamin Harris who was on this census: 1850 Census, Warren Co IND, roll 178, page 21. Benjamin Harris, 50, M, farmer, $500, Born in Kentucky Mahala, 32, F, born in Kentucky James W., 22, farmer, born in Indiana Andrew, 19, farmer, born in Indiana Artimitia, 13, F, born in Indiana I have the marriage record of Benjamin Harris and Mahala Smith - they wed on 22 July 1826 in Lawrence Co Indiana. I believe that the age on this Mahala was written down in error by the census taker. I believe this Andrew to be my gg grandfather who moved his family in the mid to late 1850's to Edgar Co IL which was just over the state border line. Andrew Jackson Harris married Mary Ann Gilreath in Martin Co IN in 1852 where her parents lived. Cathea Curry LaGGato@AOL.com

Harris (November 18, 1819-November 18, 1888) ***************** pp. 92-93 George Winston: The Jacob House and The Richmond Friends Meeting by Charles Pool Para. 3: "Professor Arnold Ricks, of the Department of History at Bennington College, and a birthright Quaker, has written the following concerning the historic Jacob House and its builder, Geroge Winston: We know that this house was constructed about 1817, the first imporvement in the ambitious 500 acre 'development' project undertaken by Jacqueline Harvie, Benjamin J. Harris, and George Winston known as the 'Town of Sydney', encompassing what is today the Fan District as well as Oregon Hill. Winston (1759-1826) was the builder among the partners; it was he who erected the original Friends Meeting House at 19th and Cary Streets in 1797, the first hoouse of worship built in Richmond after St. John's Church. Himself a prominent Friend, he like other Friends of the period had manumitted his slaves, and --- as has been detailed especially in a recent study by Gregg Kimball of the Valentine Museum --- he made a practice training and employing free Black apprentices in his extensive building operations, which included work on Jefferson's Captiol and Virginia's pioneering Penitentiary. Benjamin Harris, brother of Winston's wife, a major entrepreneur of the times as a cotton and tobacco manufacturer, was also from a Quaker family; his father, James Harris, was the first General Manager of the James River Navigation Company (George Washington, President), and as a Friend served as a member of the executive committee of the rather short-lived Virginia Abolition Society founded in 1790. Benjamin Harris himself owned the house for a few years in the 1820s. John Jacob, a Friend whose house it was for more than twenty years, expressed a characteristic Quaker concern for penal reform in serving as Assistant Superinetndent of the penitentiary under Samuel Parsons (another Friend) as Superintendent." The article was dealing with the possible destruction of the Jacob House or removal by Virginia Commonwealth University for parking space for their proposed engineering school. "Built circa 1817, the Jacob House is probably the last physical link that we have to the important early Quaker heritage of Richmond." Does anyone know whether or not Jacob House was preserved?
