Dear Harris-Hunters of whatever colony or State: Since genealogy/lineage of early American ancestors, at least in the South, where all my ancestors (except for one Ulster Irishman who came prior to 1820) originated, is by guess and by gosh, I am sending you some material which I cut and pasted from Christopher Harris's will. Ira Harris is right are right -- no person named Elizabeth appears in Christopher Harris's will, proved in Madison Co., KY. So my information posted earlier seems to be incorrect. Thanks for catching this. Ira is of the opinion that a child of Christopher Harris named Elizabeth did not survive to adulthood. (I believe some of the dates we have the older children of Christopher Harris came from an old DAR application, which may be very flawed.) I know that Christopher Harris was married to Agnes McCord by about 1776 as there is an Augusta Co., VA deed executed by this couple. (An abstract appears in Lyman Chalkley's Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish in Virginia--last time I looked it was on the internet.) By the way, Ira (or other interested parties), have you ever found the name Mary Dabney in any Dabney or Harris documents? I know traditionally a Mary Dabney is Christopher's first wife, and the fact that Chris has a son named Dabney Harris (I have some slight info on him) and that Christopher mentions Cornelius Dabney in his will would seem to indicate a close relationship. (There are so many Cornelius Dabneys that I am unsure whether the reference may be to the father of Mary Dabney or to a brother.) Madison Co. A guess: She is the daughter of John Harris. Perhaps if the researcher obtains a copy of the original bond [which MAY exist and may have been filmed], he find out the relationship. Some Kentucky marriage bonds give very specific information about the parents of both the bride and the groom as well as their ages and their places of residence, but the early bonds may not give this information. To Chuck Gibson's recent query about an Elizabeth Harris who married a Tyre Davis. Chuck wrote: Uriah Davis Married Elizabeth Harris November 29, 1812 in Madison County, Kentucky Bond By : John Harris - November 27, 1812 Oath of age for Bride By : John Harris I don't have a complete list of their children but my line is Tyre Davis. Elizabeth Harris was born in N.C. What relation John is, I don't know. My response: As far as can be determined from the abstract which I have of Tryee Harris's Caswell Co., NC will, he had no daughter named Elizabeth. I think your supposition that Elizabeth was born in North Carolina may be a stab in the dark. Tyree Harris, formerly of colonial Louisa Co. and Albemarle Co., VA, but who migrated to Orange Co., NC in the 1760s, had a brother, Christopher Harris (d. ca 1796 in Madison Co., KY) who migrated to Madison Co., KY. As far as I can determine, many of Christopher's older children married in Virginia and not in Madison Co., KY. However, some of his younger children (19 children by two wives) did marry in Madison Co., KY. A flying guess: The Elizabeth Harris to whom you refer may be a daughter of Christopher Harris of Madison Co., and John Harris MAY be her brother. This is just a supposition--one has to form hypothesis in order to test it against the official records. You will have to study the Davis line (gosh, is that as hard as the Harrises?) Here is some info about the will of Tryee Harris of Caswell Co., NC: Will of Tyree Harris In his will, made 1 Sep 1786 and recorded in Caswell Co., NC will book B-162, Tyree named as executors his son Tyree and his son Simpson as well as his son-in-law, Cornelius Dabney.+ His children were Nancy Abercrombie; Frances, wife of Cornelius Dabney; sons Tyree, Simpson, Robert (to receive land in Rockingham Co. on Little Troublesome Cr.) Other daughters were Ede Harris (wife of Duke Williams), Liddy Harris. He named a grandson William Chapman Abercromby. Tyree's first wife is said to have been Elizabeth Chapman. I have no information concerning her maiden name, but there is a Virginia deed in which Tyree's wife Elizabeth relinquishes her dower. The fact that a grandson has the middle name Chapman gives a possible hint that there may be a connection to the Chapman family, but such naming patterns are NOT reliable clues. About Christopher Harris of Madison Co., KY: He had a daughter named Elizabeth (named in his will), but I have no information about a marriage. She was not given a married name in the will of Christopher Harris. Christopher also had a son named Tyree. Suggestion: As I have time (increasingly rare these days with multiple duties), I am slowly going through the deeds of Madison Co., KY which have been filmed or held by the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. The deed indexes (both grantor and grantee) have been beautifully typed and one can frequently determine family relationships from these deeds. Especially if (at least in Madison Co., Kentucky) there is a commissioner's deed. Such a deed is generally a partition deed in which the heirs of a decedent are selling the property, sometimes to another heir or two. Some of the heirs may even be from out of state (Missouri, for instance), although the deed may not state the residence. (I found out by checking census indexes.) If you are serious about finding out about this couple who married in Madison Co., I suggest you try to borrow films from Salt Lake City of the grantor and grantee deed indexes and search for the surnames of interest to you. If you have not read deed indexes before, you will have train yourself to read them, but once you have done that, you will be able to spot the names for which you search. Happy hunting! E.W.Wallace If you find out that the Elizabeth Harris of Madison Co. to whom you refer is daughter of Christopher Harris, please let me know. All Tyree Harrises are not necessarily linked. I am told by e-mail correspondents that there are living persons bearing that name. Tyree is a favorite name among Harrises, and among their kin, but trying to unravel their lineages would be extremely time-consuming!!! Here is some information about one Tyree Harris, the son of Christopher Harris of Madison Co., KY: Tyree Harris & Sarah Garland, 28 May 1803; Higgason Harris was bondsman; Thomas Garland, father of the bride. Returned 2 Jun 1803. E.W.Wallace
Are you stuck on Which Harris? Of course, you must have a place to begin, and a time frame. Otherwise you are up a creek without a paddle. Here is an idea: The Family History Library in Salt Lake City has many county histories, and many of them are filmed and can be borrowed through your nearby LDS center. DAR Library in Washington DC also has many county histories. There may be some in a University or college library near your home--try searching the local history shelves. Although some professional genealogists pooh-pooh such county histories as *mug books* where persons had to subscribe to have their biographies included, still there is a grain of truth in nearly all these county histories. (These county histories are still being published, and, again, for a fee, you can insert info about your family. Let's hope you have the facts straight.) Where the county courthouse has burned, sometimes the only info you have about the persons featured in these county histories is from that surviving biography. For example, my great-grandfather, who lived in Texas beginning ca 1852, had relatives in Illinois, and, of course Kentucky--across the river. We had letters mentioning these Illinois folks. I was greatly disappointed to learn that one man--mentioned in two letters--lived in a county where the courthouse had burned, and I was going to have difficulty checking out the county records. Fortunately, this man seemed to like to have his name in the county histories--two of them, in fact. In one, he gave detailed info about his family's migration to Illinois, naming his parents and their residences. Furthermore, he gave good details of his own three marriages, the first two wives dying. (Divorce wasn't such a popular item those days.) The first marriage seemed to link him to my great-grandfather. His first wife's surname was the same as that of my great-grandfather. He told the date they got married, something of her migration from Kentucky with her family, that she had borne him several children, but had died after the birth of the fifth child! Then he gave info about his subsequent marriages, much of which I was able to confirm with census searches. If you are looking for a Harris and you have exhausted censuses, whatever deeds may have existed, court records, tax records, try to find a county history. The county or counties in which your ancestor lived may have an old county history. If you cannot locate a filmed copy which you may want to borrow on interlibrary loan, then write to the county library in which your ancestor lived and ask about the existence of such a county history. Some of these stories are garbled--some horribly so--but still there MAY be a clue which you can proceed to investigate in official records and censuses. Just a hint from a person who has a lot of common surnames in her lineage!!! And who never overlooks a county history for places where my ancestors lived. E.W.Wallace

Hi Harris Listers, Looking for any genealogical info on Paul P. Harris (1868-1947), founder of Rotary Club. His lineage is William^1, Salathiel^2, Howard^3, George^4, Paul P.^5. Lewis Harris, Jr. Lharris4@tampabay.rr.com
I have a William Harris in my family, born November 28, 1809. He married Tacy Saltzman in Beetown, Grant County, Wisconsin on July 10, 1849. However, family legend has it that he was married before. Given his age at almost 40 when he married Tacy, it's almost a certainty that he had been married before. He came to California in 1850. Supposedly he was accompanied by a son of a first marriage, Israel Harris. William Harris was accompanied by a Silas Beasley. There is a William Harris and a Silas Beasley in Posey County on the 1830 census. It could be that my William Harris married Margaret B. Waller on November 6, 1828. He was just a couple of weeks short of age 19. In any event, it's not unreasonable and Waller is certainly a better name to look up than Harris. Does this story resonate with anyone? Ken Harris
