Catsmaw, A simplified explanation would be: That Davis Harris received land warrant # 4167.0 from the State of Virginia in the amount of 100 acres, on June 5, 1786, for his service in the Revolutionary War. It is likely that he was a Private in rank, based on the size of the warrant and he served in a Regiment of the Virginia Continental Line which was an American Army Regiment, not Militia. Hope this helps, James E. Hargraves In a message dated 9/26/2003 10:51:32 AM Pacific Standard Time, CATSMAW@aol.com writes: can some one tell me what this means i found it on line warrant id 4167.0 veteran name Harris David acres 100 soldier unit Virginia continental line branch unknown date 6/5/1786

This is some information concerning the above couple that I have picked up over the years. In July of 2002 I posted the abstract of his will on HARRIS-HUNTERS. I got it from Abstracts of The Wills and Estate Records Of Granville County, North Carolina, 1746-1808, by Zae Hargett Gwynn. Starting there, I have added bits and pieces based on the information I have found. As with all information it should be checked and rechecked. Robert Harris, b. Abt. 1710, Virginia m. This is one of the Richmond Terrell's in my database: Richmond Terrell, b. in St. Martin's Parish, Louisa Co., Va. Married Anne (Nancy) Overton (1725-1790), d/o James Overton and Elizabeth Trueheart Garland. Children 1. Elizabeth Overton "Eliza" , married Frederick Harris, "of Frederick's Hall" 2. Richmond 3. Samuel 4. James 5. Richard M. , married Lucy Maria Carr 6. Ann Overton , married Col. Zachary Lewis 7. Mary Overton , married Col. Garrett Minor 8. Barbara Overton, married Aaron Fontaine 9. William , married Martha Winston At least part of the citations, E. W. gave concerning Frederick Harris and others seems to fit this family. I would suspect that any of the citations dealing with the Terrell's fits into the information dealing with Frederick Harris, of Frederick's Hall, s/o William Harris and his wife, Anne Elizabeth Burnett. (As with all information it needs to be checked and double checked.) Incidentally, at least one Terrell line, associated with the Dabney family, ended up in Alabama, where two of the Terrell men became Judges and quite well known. Ira
E. W. and List, In Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine, Vol. XXVI, there is an article on the Nelson Family. I have Frederick's wife as Fanny Overton. The article had Frederick's daughter Keziah who married James Nelson, son of Edward and Mary (Garland) Nelson. According to what I have, Keziah and James had 12 children. Ira
A Robert Harris, residing in Granville Co., NC in 1761, apparently had a wife named Leminder, although the relationship of these Harrises is not spelled out in the will abstract which I have at hand. One George Jordan of Granville Co. on 30 Mar 1751 wrote a will which had these witnesses: Robt Harris Leminder (her V mark [or some similar mark]) Harris Mary Harris 12 May 1761 Court proved by Robert Harris who made oath he saw Leminder Harris & Mary Harris subscribe to the same. Sarah Jordan qualified as Exectrix. Another later will of Granville Co., that of Joseph Cash, dated 21 Jul 1779, was witnessed by both a Robt Harris and a Robert Harris, Jr. Comment: Note the difference in the dates of the first will and of the second will. Junior does not necessarily mean that he is the son of the older man, but this information always bears further investigation. (Source: Timothy W. Rackley, GRANVILLE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA ORIGINAL WILLS, VOLUME 1, 1749-1810 [Kernersville, NC: Rackley Publ. Co., 2002) To Harris Hunters of colonial Granville Co., NC: I have the e-mail address of Timothy Rackley who has recently abstracted a number of deeds of Granville Co., picking up where Zae Hargett Gwynn's published abstracts left off. Also, as noted, Rackley has abstracted wills to 1810. He has just now released some early tax lists, which are ALWAYS a good substitute for censuses, although they seldom list women, unless those women are widows. E-mail me privately if you want Rackley's e-mail address. By the way, some tell me that Zae Hargett Gwynn's abstracts of early Granville Co., NC (deeds, court records, wills and estate papers) have been reprinted. Does anyone have information about these reprints--publisher, etc.? E.W.Wallace Whose Granville Co. colonials scattered everywhere after the American Revolution

Recently I took an 1830 census and then plugged in the information I knew about Azael Daniel Harris and his family. I found that he had four daughters that I had not found. Does anyone know of 1-3 Harris women who would fit this family, that you have no family for? Can anyone fill in any of the missing blanks of information. I have quite a bit about this family, but am always checking and re-checking and trying to find more. I descend through Azael & Patience's son, William Wilson. Some have suggested that Patience's maiden name may have been Thompson, White, or Wilson. Does anyone in those families have a Patience? What family(s) do Nancy Ann Brown and Rachel Brown come from? Any insight or information is appreciated. Ira L. Harris III Evansville, Indiana
Some time ago Rich Boyd wrote a review of a book entitled ALBERT MATTHEW HARRIS AND OLA RICHARDSON OF ARKANSAS AND OKLAHOMA. The book was written by my husband Lester L. Harris. He died in 2000, but I continue to get queries from possible interested descendants, My computer was down for quite some time, and I am hoping that any of you who were interested in the book or the information it contained will try again to contact me. There are some copies of the book left and are available if you are interested. I will be glad to answer any queries that you have about the line so that you will know if there is any relation to your lines. I,too have sent out queries in answer to articles and heard nothing from the person I contacted. It is disappointing to a searcher who is chasing those elusive relatives. Dear Harris-Hunters, particularly of Colonial Virginia, I need help in sorting out the identity of a Frederick Harris of Louisa Co., VA. He apparently was the brother of Robert Harris (Major) and of Benjamin Harris of the same county. However, I may have information here about two Frederick Harrises in the same locality. Can you help me straighten out the identity? Submitted by E.W.Wallace FREDERICK HARRIS OF LOUISA CO., VA Brother of Benjamin Harris and Robert Harris, presumably his contemporaries in colonial Louisa Co., VA. He resided in Louisa Co. It is unclear whether he is the same Frederick Harris who was a justice of Louisa Co. as late as July 1789, well after the American Revolution. Louisa Co. DB F-446-447 in 1789 labels Frederick Harris and William Phillips as Justices of Louisa Co. They were granted power to take examination of Barbara Barret, wife of Robert Barret as Mrs. Barret was unable to travel to Louisa Co. court. Frederick's Brothers It is stated in the will of Benjamin Harris, Trinity Parish, Louisa Co., dated 30 July 1765 and recorded 14 Oct 1765, that his brothers were Frederick Harris and Robert Harris. The latter two men plus Benjamin's wife Mary were to be executors. Witnesses were James Overton, Charles Nuckolls, and Mary Ratliff. (Louisa Co. Wills Bk 1-72 on SLC film 32,191). 1785 Louisa Co. Will Bk 1-72 "Will of Benjamin Harris of Trinity Parish. Wife Mary. 3 sons: Robert, eldest son Overton & ---. Dau: Nancy. Lands to be divided among my eldest son Overton & son Robert at death of my wife. Excrs: wife Mary Harris & two brothers: Frederick Harris & Robert Harris. Signed: Benjamin Harris. Wit: James Overton, Charles Nuckolls, Mary Ratlif. Dated 30 July 1785. Rcd 14 Oct 1785." (Nancy Chappelear & Kate Binford Hatch, ABSTRACTS OF LOUISA COUNTY WILL BOOKS , p. 13) The relationship of Frederick to Benjamin Harris is implied (not proved) in this excerpt: p. 53 [of Guardian records] Gdn. Bond. Frederick Harriss Gdn to Overton, Robert, Benjamen & Nancy Harriss Orphans of Benja. Harriss Dec'd; 2,000 pds currt. money. Sec. David Anderson & Garrett Minor. 13 Mar 1774 (Rosalie Edith Davis, WHERE HAVE ALL THE CHILDREN GONE?.... [Manchester, MO: Published by author, 1980], p. 8) Frederick, then, is one of the sons of William Harris of Hanover Co., VA. He apparently died in Louisa Co. and his will is recorded in book Louisa Co. WB 5-20. However, WB 5 reportedly begins in 1801, and it is doubtful Frederick Harris, brother of Major Robert Harris lived that long. More research is needed. (Had the probate extended that long?) Little is known of Frederick Harris of Louisa Co., VA, who owned land in Kentucky. According to abstractor Mrs. Ardery, citation below, he had at least two sons: Richard and Richmond. Frederick and his sons were associated with members of the Overton family, implying that there may have been a relationship with the family of William Harris (qv) and his wife Temperance Overton. The transactions of these three men, Frederick, Richmond and Richard are combined here. Richmond and Richard Harris An early Kentucky land record signed by Richmond Harris: "Ky. Land Office - VA Surveys, Bk. 11, pg. 87 - Wm. B. Harris and Jas. Overton's Hrs., assee [assignee] of Wm. Steward, assee, of David Tanner, assee of Emanuel Kelly, assee of Chas. Patterson, 1800 A. part of a 2000 A. entry, part of Treasury Warrant 10694, located in Mercer Co. on Kentucky River, adjoining Isaac Winston and Ann Poage, 24 Jan 1789. Richmond Harris assigns one-half of land in within plat mentioned to James Overton, Jr., and desires to register grant accordingly. 25 Feb 1789. /s/ Richmond Harris." The author adds: "Richmond Harris was the son of Frederick Harris of Louisa Co., VA, see Franklin Co. [KY] deeds." The deeds are not included in Vol. II. From Louisa Co. DB G-422 Frederick Harris of Louisa appts son Richard Harris, his atty. in fact to convey his Kentucky lands, 4 Mar 1794. It is doubtful Frederick Harris in this DB G of 1794 is the same as the earlier Frederick Harris, unless the power of attorney dtd 1794 was not recorded at the time of execution which may have occurred earlier. Frederick, then, had a son Richard, who was appointed attorney by not only his father but also by Richmond Harris. There were many other Harris males in Louisa Co., identities of all not known. However, one suspects that they were interrelated. Other references to residents of Louisa Co. are found in these deeds or other records. Ct. Bk B, p. 98, 5 Sep 1798 [county not stated by author, but presumably Louisa Co.]: "Richmond Harris to John Overton of Fayette Co., KY, 250 A. located in Mercer Co. on South side of K[entuck]y River, consideration of $500.000. (Mrs. William Breckenridge Ardery, "Harris Notes," KENTUCKY COURT AND OTHER RECORDS [Baltimore: GPC, 1979], P. 170) Was Frederick Harris's Wife A Terrell? >From Louisa Co. deeds in the late 1740s on, we learn that a Richmond Terrell was a neighbor of the Harrises, at least a neighbor of Frederick Harris. From time to time Terrell witnessed their deeds, and they reciprocated. However, there seem to have been a father and a son of the same name. Louisa Co. DB C1/2-49, 13 Nov 1764, shows Richmond Terrell of New Kent Co., Blisland Par. "for love and affection" deeding to his son Richmond "all the lands I possess in Louisa Co. and Hanover Co." together with eight named slaves. Among the witnesses was Frederick Harris. Later, there are references to Richmond Terrell, dec'd, so that we assume that the father had died, but the younger Richmond Terrell continued to appear in the deeds from time to time. Frederick Harris, along with Garrett Minor and Z. Lewis, were executors of of one Richmond Terrill, deceased, of St. Martin's Par., Louisa Co. Whether this refers to the older Terrill or his son is not known. (DB D1/2, dated 23 Dec 1771). Because Frederick was an executor, the deduction is made that there was a close familial relationship. A Younger Frederick Harris of Louisa Co.? A marriage recorded in Louisa Co., VA indicates that a Frederick Harris had a daughter Jemima Harris. The relationship of the bride and groom to each other is unknown, and the sureties' relationships to either bride or groom is also unknown. 15 October 1789 Overton Harris and Jemima Harris, daughter of Frederick Harris. Sur. Robert Harris, Jr. and Ann O. Harris p. 46 (Kathleen Booth Williams, MARRIAGES OF LOUISA COUNTY, VIRGINIA [1959], p 50) Question: Is this Overton Harris the son of the deceased Benjamin Harris, brother of Robert Harris and of Frederick Harris? Looking forward to your help. E.W.Wallace
I noted some information recently that conflicted with my records. I am also going out on a limb but will throw my thoughts into the pile. 1. I have that Major Wm Harris(1629-1678) being the son of Capt Thomas Harris-also brother to Thomas Harris(father to Capt Robert Harris) and Mary Harris. 2. Major Wm Harris had a son named Thomas (who married a Mary-possibly Jefferson) 3.. This Thomas Harris also had a son named Thomas. There also being a Thomas in just about every generation following. Anyone able to prove/disprove any of the above please do. I, like everyone else, would love to see these Thomases sorted out. Thanks, Allison MacNaughton descendant of Major William Harris

Ira and all-- I believe part of the census below is incorrect. I think all these Harris' are actually IN Randolph Co. but the post office locales are incorrect--they are in Delta post office area but Troy is in Pike Co. in South Alabama. I noticed when I first found these folks in Genealogy.com that it was listed as Pike Co but the actual census page said Randolph Co. I mention this because the Andy and Washington Harris here we believe are the connection to my husbands' Harris'--These 2 are listed in 1860 Randolph County as living with Mark and Mary Harris of S.C. and are listed as Andrew J. and George W. In 1850 Randolph Co. we find Mark, Mary and sons Elijah, Andrew and daughter Martha. I am not positive these are all the same people because all I have is census info. I hope I have not confused everyone further but as you all know Harris research can be confusing at times! Any additions or corrections welcome. Ira: The D.C. Harris on the census list below is Daniel Cameron Harris. He was born 5/14/24 and died 1/16/03. He was a self-taught herb doctor and also farmed. His first wife (Martha Dixson Smith) was sister to Alabama Governor William Hugh Smith. Following her death in 1866, Daniel married a Civil War widow (Manda Blake Owens). Between the two wives there were ten children. Daniel was also the younger brother to my g-g grandfather (Hugh W. Harris). Hugh W. Harris relocated from Randolph County AL to Hardin and McNairy counties Tennessee in the 1840's. I have searched in vain for information on their ancestry. To date, I have found one obscure internet reference listing their parents names as Mark and Mary. If this rings a bell with anyone, please contact me. If anyone has need of additional information on Daniel, please let me know. Phil Harris -----Original Message----- From: Ira L.
