    3. Hi Ira, Thanks for the will. How do you know William and Judith's birth dates? Did Judith also have a will or did they just use his to take care of whatever estate was still there when she died? Does anyone know how Mecklenburg County Va and Granville Co. N. C. relate. Did part of Mecklenburg County become Granville? I have found some Claiborne Harrises in Granville Co. N. C. but don't know if they are mine or not. >From the census records I don't believe my Claiborne was born before 1760. I know that my Mumford Monroe Harris was born in 1786 or 87 (Family Bible) and he was probably their first or possibly 2nd child Judith would have been 45-48 when Claibourne was born. I think there were two or three children after him--if they are named in order in the will.which possibly would have had her bearing children into her 50's. The other record on William that someone sent had his birth date as 1704. It is interesting that I have that Mumford Monroe Harris in 3 generations and there was someone named Monroe mentioned in that will. Could this be a possible link? Does anyone have any solutions? Thanks. Sarah

    1. [HH] Sherwood etc. Harris
    2. HAROLD D ANDREWS
    3. Hi Everyone, I'm curious about what proof there is that Sherwood Harris B. 1733 d. 1805 was the son of William and Judith Hudson Harris. I have a Claiborne Harris that might possibly be a son of these two but I have no proof. From census records I had surmised that my Claiborne could have been born around 1760 which would make him in the same generation as this Sherwoods children My Claiborne died in 1833 Fayette Co. TN and was in Anson County N. C. in 1800-1807. What proof is there that William Harris was born in 1704 or thereabouts? Does anyone have a marriage record for William and Judith? I have seen documentation of his will of 1779 and hers of 1798 which, if she were born about the same time as he was she would have been in her 90's when she died. I believe his will was probated in Mecklenburg Co. Va. If my Claiborne is the brother of this Sherwood there would have been about a 25 or 30 yr. gap in their ages which would put Claiborne down near the youngest which for some reason I don't think he was. I wonder if the Sherwood born in 1733 might be the son of one of those other Sherwoods or even of a Thomas. If anyone has records of William and Judith Harris' marriage or birth dates please share. Thanks. Sarah

    3. Ann, I haven't seen the biographical sketches and would like to get the information. Originally, I started searching for Sherod Harris of Pickens/Green County, AL., and rather than finding him, I came across about 6 land records for Charles F. and Lydia Ann Harris, Simeon Harris, Callie T. Womack and later Simeon and Callie T. Harris. Its been several months since I've thought about this particular research but I don't recall ever finding both of them in the census. However, I noticed a census entry for "Callie Harris" in 1870 but never was sure whether it was actually her. One of her land records was quite interesting in that it mentioned that she had to use her estate money to maintain her and her children during the "ravages" of the Civil War. It didn't say whether Simeon was deceased or if the estate was still from her 1st husband. I believe that Callie married William Womack in Dallas County, AL. (I can't remember all of the details.) I'm not sure how this particular Simeon fit into the bigger picture but after finding the information showing that part of the Green / Pickens Counties Harris families had migrated into Louisiana it all made pretty good sense. I also found some evidence that a few of them migrated into Arkansas. I found at least one record of the other probably related Sherrod owning property (something to do with his married daughter) in Arkansas. (or any other place in Kentucky) died without a will, search the probate and court records for an administration, inventory, estate sale, guardianship, etc. Also, by reading deeds, I have discovered tha in later Kentucky Commissioners deeds (indexed in the grantor indexes under C) often have to do with sales of partitoned lands by the heirs. Even though the heirs do NOT always give their places of residences, by studying the census indexes for Missouri (and occasionally the marriage records), I have found that the heirs and/or their spouses have returned to Madison Co. from out-of-state. You are indeed fortunate when the residences of the heirs are given. (Lots of detective work in genealogy. That's why so many retired folks do this--it takes LOTS of time.) E.W.Wallace

    3. In regard to above subject it appears to me that the information given regarding this Elizabeth Tilman's marriage to this Sherrod Harris is somewhat erroneous. According to The Douglas Register of Dover Parish, Goochland Co., VA, p. 6, Sherrod Harris and Hannah Page, both of Dover Parish, were married on Dec. 16, 1761. Sherrod Harris subsequently had 14 children from at least two wives and possibly three. The children are as follows: Franky (female) b. abt Jan 1763 m. Shadriot Eason John b. 3 Apr 1765 m. Nancy Williams Hannah b. abt 19 Jan 1768 m. Alsey Dean Mary b. 1 Mar 1771 m. Dudley Williams Archibald b. 3 Feb 1774 m. Susannah Williams Jonathan b. 13 Apr 1778 m. Elizabeth Williams Hudson (Huston) date not known m. Sally Trammel William date not known m. Drucilla Unknown Nancy b. 29 Jun 1787 m. Joshua Birmingham Simeon b. 4 May 1793 m. 1) Elizabeth Bennett 2) Margaret Bailey 3) Elizabeth Hicks Tilman P. b. 19 Jan 1795 m. Tiletha Unknown Sherrod W. b. 25 Jul 1797 m. Winnie Walls White Elizabeth b. Jun 1799 m. Mills Stephenson Martha b. 15 Apr 1803 m. Robert Stringfellow The will of Sherrod Harris was probated in the October 1805 Court of Anson Co.,NC and is very interesting in that it specifically names "my six youngest children" as Nancy, Simeon, Tilmon, Sherrod, Elizabeth, and Martha. It also separates apparently the first five as Franky, John, Hanner (Hannah), Mary, and Archibald since he left to them one dollar and no more. This could mean he had given them an earlier inheritance. He gave his son Jonathan 25 acres of land from a tract of 238 acres and left the balance of that land to be equally divided between Huston (Hudson) and William. The will also names his wife as Elizabeth and it is believed that this refers to Mary Elizabeth Jones, b. abt 1758 in VA and who died 27 Apr 1848 in Pickens Co., AL. Ken Schwarzburg

    3. Richard, Your post caught my interest, since we are still in search of William Harris (b. 1798 PA)' lineage. Washington County is not near to Wayne County, PA, I realize, but one never knows--he may have travelled north as an adult, found his wife (Betsey Sharp), and decided to stay where her family was in Wayne. Do you have any thoughts on Mary Harris Mustard's parents? I see that William is a common given name in the next generation, a few times over, so that is encouraging... thanks for your thoughts on the matter Holly Harris Jagger Binghamton NY

    3. Shannon, Greetings from Indiana. I don't know the answer to your question. I do not research the Harris-Tipton line, so I know very little about either family. The other day I ran across a query, so when I found the information I had on these two families (living side be side), I decided to put it on the HH site with the possibility of helping someone working on that line. Sorry, I can not be of much help, Ira

Ruth Farington Falls City Journal Friday 15 Dec 1899 A DEEP MYSTERY WHAT HAS BECOME OF IVAN FARINGTON DISAPPEARED FROM GALENA, KANSAS Nothing has been seen nor heard of him for over a week - not a single trace can be found - fear of foul play Ivan Farington has mysteriously disappeared from Galena, Kansas, and for over a week nothing has been seen or heard of him. Not withstanding the fact that a diligent search has been conducted and large rewards offered, no trace of him has been found. A week ago last friday he went to an adjoining town to look at some mining property. He returned about five o'clock in the afternoon and in the evening went uptown. He went to a drug store where he remained until about eight o'clock and then started for home accompanied by his dog. A man who saw him cross the street a couple of blocks from his home is the last person who saw anything of him. About an hour later his dog came home alone. His disappearance is a deep mystery. It is known that he did not have in excess of five dollars with him and did not even have his overcoat, so it is not probable that he left town. It is feared that he has met with foul play. The city of Galena and several lodges of which he is a member, have offered large rewards for information concerning him and nothing is being left undone to unravel the mystery. Ivan is one of Falls City's young men, having lived here until a short time ago when he located at Galena where he has mining interests. The news of his disappearance has caused a great anxiety among his friends who have not yet given up hope that he will be located alive and well. Falls City Journal 1917 FOUND AFTER 18 YEARS A message was received yesterday from Galena, Kansas, stating that the remains of Ivan E. Farington had been found in an old abandoned lead mine shaft at that place. He disappeared December 1, 1899, and no trace of him had been found since. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Farington, and brother of Fred E. Farington, and Mrs. E.H. Towle, all of this city. Those living here twenty years or more ago will remember Ivan Farington. He grew to manhood in this place, and was a book- keeper for some time in the First National Bank. In 1898 he moved with his father and mother to Galena to engage in lead and zinc mining. Galena was on a great boom at that time, and the city was infested with thugs and outlaws. Murders and disappearances were of daily occurence. It was supposed that Mr. Farington was a victim of a holdup and that his body was thrown into an old mining shaft where it was found a day or two ago. He was last seen alive on his way home from a drug store about 8 o'clock one evening, with his black hunting dog, "Mack." The dog came home about 9 o'clock without him. A thorough search was made at the time for him. Old shafts, of which there were several hundred scattered about the city were examined. In some cases, boats were lowered into the water in the shafts, and the tunnels explored, but with no results. The finding of his body explains somewhat of the mystery surrounding the case, and is a relief to the relatives. Mr. C.W. Farington, his father, has gone to Galena and will bring the remains to this city for interment in the family lot in Steele cemetery.
