    3. fyi... http://www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/eagle/ Brooklyn Daily Eagle 1841-1902 online This project was produced by Brooklyn Public Library's Brooklyn Collection and funded by the Library and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a federal agency that fosters innovation, leadership and a lifetime of learning. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle was published from 1841 to 1955, then revived for a short time from 1960 to 1963. Because of the enormity of the collection, the digitization of the historic Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper from reels of microfilm has been broken down into more than one phase. Phase I, which can at present be found on this site, covers the period from October 26, 1841 to December 31, 1902, representing half of the Eagle's years of publication. This period includes all of the years for which there is no index as well as the eleven years during which an index was published. Approximately 147,000 pages of newspaper in various digital formats are contained in this online repository. Access can be gained either by date of issue or by keyword searching.

    1. [HH] HANOVER, VA HARRIS & KIMBROUGH TO EDGECOMBE CO., NC
    2. PAM
    3. Hi, Harrises, This is a long posting that includes Hanover Co., VA records and records of Edgecombe Co., NC that involve one particular Harris family & some of their relations. Here are some records from New Kent/Hanover Co., VA that show the births of a few Harrises. [As I'm sure most of you know, Hanover was created from New Kent Co. in 1720.] It seems obvious to me that there are additional early records from Hanover that are missing or destroyed. Most unfortunately, though the Vestry Book survives for St. Paul's Parish [which was derived from St. Peter's between 1701-1703], the actual Parish Register of St. Paul's, which could tell us so much about the origins of various Harrises there [beyond the obviously-important Vestryman William Harris and some of his immediate family which were included in the Vestry records of that Parish] is not extant. Births and deaths of the rest of the Harises are unknown there, except for hints given in the processionings of the various persons' land as they are included in the Vestry Minutes of the Parish. VERY luckily, and unusual, however, is that the Parish processionings WERE included in the St. Paul's Vestry Book---otherwise there would be even less information on the Hanover Harrises than has survived. One note about the Kimbrough/Kimbrow records---I realize that Marmaduke Kimbrough, who deeded Edgecombe Co., NC, land to his sister, Martha, and her husband, Richard Harris, is not specifically identified in the St. Peter's register---but clearly, given the records, he came from the same Kimbrough family group that moved from Hanover, VA to Edgecombe Co., NC, and was related in some way to these Harrises. It seems obvious to me that William Winston was closely- related to Marmaduke Kimbrough, given the price for the land that Winston charged Marmaduke [5 shillings]. [This indicates that Marmaduke Kimbrough was probably either the brother-in-law or son-in-law of William Winston, but, as I have no knowledge of the Winston end of this line, I can't conjecture beyond that.] One of these Harrises shown in St. Peter's register, I believe [Richard] moved to Edgecombe Co., NC, as has already been shown on the lists [however, I will repost the deed that proves that, along with some additional research I have done in NC.] [It is very hard to copy formatted documents into E-mail, and I apologize if things get messed up in the transmission...] These are not my Harrises, as far as I can determine. Hope this may help someone out there. Surely these men have lots of descendants. 3. Liz, I am curious about your Hypatia. I have a Hypatia in my database. She is the daughter of John Turpin Harris and his wife Rebecca Britton. She is the grandaughter of John Jordan Harris and Anne Obedience Turpin. She is part of the line that goes back to a Thomas Harris and his wife Youette. The Hypatia Harris I have was born February 15, 1798 and died August 7, 1818. She was married twice: to an unknown Spouse and to Colin McRae. Hypatia and her parents were in the area of Cumberland County, Powhatan County, and Chesterfield County, Virginia. I was wondering if your Hypatia might be related to the above family. I am just passing this along in the chance that this might give you a clue. They are not part of my line. As with all information, it should be checked and double-checked. Ira L. Harris III

    3. Seeking identity of a Mrs. Martha Harris and a Miss Minnie Harris whose pictures are in a small family album dated 1864. Martha has dark hair and Minnie is a teenager (?). On the back is the name of the photographer and Shreveport, LA. Other Harris female photos in the album are Angelina Harris Taintor and Hypagia Harris Whepley. Angelina was born in Pittsylvania, Co., VA in 1819, married Giles Taintor in MS in 1839 and moved to Shreveport by 1850. Hypagia was born in VA about 1828, married Daniel Whepley in Natchez in 1846 and was in CA by 1850. She died there in 1863. The album was a gift to her son William by his father in 1864. No male Harris names are known. The Harris families in the specific MS counties and in Shreveport in the time frame known have no apparent ties to VA or to the females pictured. These girls must have been related to someone named Harris. Family story is that they lived on a plantation on the Mississippi. Liz Bawden

    3. Seeking parents and siblings of Angelina Belinda Harris, who was born in Pittsylvania Co., VA in 1819, according to a written history of her husband's family. Angelina married Giles Taintor in Madison Co., MS in 1839 at the plantation home of Major Charles Green, no apparent relative. The couple lived in Natchez in the 1840's and were in Shreveport, LA by 1850. One daughter Atchie (Augustine?) married Charles William Rankin before 1873. Another daughter Angeline married D. Como in 1881. Both marriages occurred in Shreveport. Hypagia (Hypatia) Harris Whelpley is presumed sister of Angelina. She was born in VA about 1828, married in Natchez in 1846, died in Sacramento, CA in 1863. A small photo album dated 1864 contains Harris females Hypagia, Angelina, Mrs. Martha Harris and Miss Minnie Harris. The last two were taken or copied in Shreveport in the 1860's. No male Harris names known. Liz Bawden

    3. Irene, The only point that I am trying to suggest is that sometimes things aren't necessarily the way they seem. I don't know enough about these families to make any firm conclusions. According to the workshops I've attended, genealogists should obtain 3 pieces of direct evidence to prove each relationship. If I recall, census records don't qualify as a primary source of records. To be really thorough, I suppose you would have to research of all of the lines to make sure they go back to the same parents. Probate and will records can be a little tricky as you don't always know whether the person who is listed as an heir is actually a child or a grandchild or some other relationship. Even if the relationship is stated, you don't necessarily know whether the child was an adopted grandchild. I was mainly referring to Ptolemes as being a son of Elizabeth Harris. While its true that the probate records seem to indicate that Staunton was the son Leodicia, it is still wise to continue researching since he also could have been Elizabeth's son. I don't think that her age was true on the census record. Originally, I figured that she would have been around 15 at the time of her marriage. I don't actually claim a relationship to this family. I am researching them along with the other Pickens and Green County families hoping to find a lead on the elusive James Harris who was in the early Green County census. I'm not related to him either but I found numerous land records that link him to Sarah Harris of Jefferson County, AL. James and Sarah Swinney Harris were married in St. Clair County (1822) and then they settled in Green / Pickens County until he died (after 1830) Then, while a widow, she purchased property in Sumter & Jefferson County, then resold the land in Sumter and went back to Jefferson County where her own family was living. My ancestor wasn't even born until 1838; her 2nd husband was probably Joel Harris but I've yet to find a marriage certificate. It doesn't really matter though because I don't know where the family came from so I'm still at an impasse. I found that the Green County families were particularly interesting in that they seem to be a mixture of different families. Elijah Harris was a descendent of Walton Harris; the others were probably related but may have been cousins from Virginia. I don't claim to have special knowledge. I've just been through about 70 years of microfilmed Green County land and probate records and extracted whatever information that I've found. I didn't stop to pick up collateral families; I was mainly interested in John Harris's family since they were apparently from Edgecomb C. NC. I've found just one person, "Blake Little" who was directly connected to my family and also originally from Edgecomb County, NC. However, I am pretty sure that the family lived in Tennessee before they arrived in Green County, AL Kristina harris

    1. [HH] children of Evan R Harris
    2. harris220
    3. I haven't found any proof of relationships except for the census record and the will of Evan R. Harris. I have the 1850 census record and it stated the following children in Leodicy's household: Leodicy 64, Elizabeth 35, Leodicy 17, Staunton 18, Ptolomes 11 or 4. Printing is a little difficult to decipher. Since Leodicy was apparently 64, it would be unlikely for her to have had a child so late in life. Not impossible, just unlikely. I have the 1840 census record but couldn't find it right now. I will check it tomorrow but I am fairly certain that Sherod W Harris had several children listed in his household. Also, note that Staunton's age is out of order in comparison with Leodicy. While a mistake could have been made by the census taker, its possible that Staunton was actually Elizabeth's son in addition to Ptolomes. I realize that it may just be coincidental but on the other hand, it might be a clue that the household wasn't exactly the way we think. I've seen him listed as Leodicy's child but I feel more comfortable not making any conclusions that aren't based on actual records. Like I've mentioned before, Sherod W. Harris ended up in Louisiana and then Henderson County, TX. I haven't seen any record stating when or where he died. One other note was that there was an individual named Joshua Harris that was included in the census record about 10 pages away from his household. It may just be coincidental, but it might have been his son. Kristina Harris

Laodiciea (Mrs. Lewis Shirley of Noxubee C., MS) Staunton Y. I believe, based on this information, that the S Y Harris in Newton County, MS in 1880 is the son of Evan Harris. He is listed in 1850 Greene County, AL census with Leodicia Harris 64, Elizabeth Harris 35, Leodicy Harris 17, Stanten Harris 18 and Ptolemn Harris (cannot read the age). He is in Choctaw County, Alabama in 1860 and Neshoba County, MS in 1870. I don't know if the other Harris families are connected or not. Do you have any information that would prove he is the son of Sherwood and Elizabeth Harris rather than Evan and Leodicia Harris? Thanks, Irene "Ira L.
