    2. I missed the email that mentioned the Harris line, and Gentry. Would anyone happen to know who else is working on this line? Please see below for the message sent. Thank you and Merry Christmas. Jude ----------- In a message dated 12/7/03 12:06:59 PM, Hdanw@aol.com writes: << Dear researchers, I am butting in here--if you want your messages kept confidential, keep them off the list!!! This was the exchange of e-mails on the Gentry list: Hi Kim I found a site on Ancestry that has Elisha's parents as John Gentry, Jr. and Rhoda Harris. If John Gentry died in Bullitt Co. Ky, you might be able to find a will probated for him, possibly listing his heirs. I found the LDS people have filmed Bullitt Co. wills. That will probably be the only way to establish Elisha's parents. Or just go through all the wills until you find one who names Elisha. I know it's time consuming, but sometimes that's the only way. Norma Response: I do a fair amount of Kentucky research, beginning before it became a Commonwealth in 1792, meaning I use a fair number of Virginia records also, including what is called the 1787 Census of Virginia (personal property tax lists which included all of the then Kentucky counties, all of what is now West Virginia, and whatever other land Virginia claimed in 1787.) In Kentucky, if you cannot find a will (fairly rare in some areas) or an administration listed in the indexes of the Kentucky films for probates (wills) and court records (administrations), I suggest this method. This action by the courts occurred fairly late in Kentucky, and I have not studied Kentucky law to determine all the ins and outs of distribution of property of a deceased person. However, while plowing though the filmed land records (deed indexes, both grantor and grantee), I found many Kentucky counties have typed these deed indexes, and they are nicely alphabetized, making the reading of the microfilm fairly easy. This is how you MAY be able to spot an heir: Look under the alphabetical index for your suspected ancestor and look for entries which have appended the symbols *Hrs* meaning heirs or *&c* meaning others. If you do not find your usual suspect or his sons-in-law, flip over to the C part of the index. Here in later years you will find Commissioners deeds. Frequently the courts appointed a commissioner to help the heirs (or heirs of heirs, if the original heir is deceased) reach a decision/compromise concerning the distribution or sale of the land. For one deed in a Kentucky county, I found about 15 heirs of a deceased ancestor, including the male spouses of the married females. Unfortunately, the commissioners deeds did not always list the residence of the parties, and so you have to do some sleuthing. Knowing many Kentuckians moved to Missouri, I searched not only the Kentucky census indexes (through 1870, many have been published) but also the census indexes for Missouri. Genealogy, as you have discovered, is largely detective work. That's why you read as many guide books as possible and books pertainng to the records of the particular locality which you are searching. There are on the LDS website some reseach outlines for all the states of the US plus some foreign countries--England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Germany, etc. Also, be aware when the county was formed. You may have to look in the parent county or the progeny counties as the large counties divided. (This is where Everton's Handy Book for Genealogists, whatever edition, is helpful.) I hope you find your missing ancestors and their siblings, their children, their parents, their in-laws and all other associates. When a census, such as the 1890 census, is missing, consult the Family History Library Catalog on www.familysearch.org [the lower right has the link] and see if tax lists for that locality have been filmed. Tax lists in Kentucky are a great help in locating folks. A man got taxed even if all he had was a horse. Generally from these Kentucky tax lists, you can figure out when a male became of age. Some of the later ones even asked how many kids were in the family!!! E.W.Wallace

You will see William's sister Sarah Elizabeth Harris married to Abram Beasely. http://www.kencrouse.com/crouse/fam10604.htm Here is a reference to this Beasely Family's land purchase in Darlington South Carolina in 1809. My GGG Grandfather, Britton Harris is listed as their neighbor. However, Britton is only 6 years old at the time. His father, Daniel Harris, passed away in 1806. Britton inherited the land. The Sarah Elizabeth Harris who married the Beaseley is Britton's daughter. As a side note, there are a lot of people trying to figure out where Daniel Harris came from. So, if you have any idea, please let us know. 1. [HH] Use of Other Kentucky Records
    2. Dear researchers, I am butting in here--if you want your messages kept confidential, keep them off the list!!! Norma Response: I do a fair amount of Kentucky research, beginning before it became a Commonwealth in 1792, meaning I use a fair number of Virginia records also, including what is called the 1787 Census of Virginia (personal property tax lists which included all of the then Kentucky counties, all of what is now West Virginia, and whatever other land Virginia claimed in 1787.) 1. [HH] Researching Persons with Kentucky Roots
    2. To Harris Hunters whose folks may have been in Kentucky (possibly originating in Virginia, North Carolina, and possibly Pennsylvania. Tennessee was formed after Kentucky was formed.) One of the easier states in which to do genealogical research is Kentucky, although there a few burned courthouses!!! Most persons migrated early to Kentucky because of land, and from there they migrated to Indiana, Missouri, wherever. One of my distant cousins, with whom I share colonial Virginia, colonial North Carolina and Kentucky roots says her folks kept moving till they got to Oregon!!! Anyway, if you suspect your ancestor was age 16 or over and owned nothing in Kentucky but a horse, please investigate and see whether tax records for the county in which you suspect he lived has extant tax records. I personally use the Family History Library (LDS) online catalog to begin my preliminary research. For example, was the county in existence for the time period in which you search. Kentucky was one huge county at one time. Then it divided into three counties--Nelson, Lincoln, and Fayette, so you have to know the genealogy of the counties. Then the counties kept dividing--until now, a recent past governor complained that Kentucky had too many counties. It probably made it difficult for the Commonwealth to send funds (if it did) to all those counties, each of which had to support a sheriff, at least one fire department, and so on, not to mention all the roads. Imagine all the bookkeeping. (But I deviate.) If you find your ancestor was taxed for land--and not his single horse (which generally denoted a single male who had just reached majority), then try to learn from the FHL catalog on www.familysearch.org [place search] whether any deed indexes exist. If so, try to order to a nearby LDS center both the grantor and the grantee indexes. (The list of these FHCs is also on the above website.) Your person may have sold his land before he migrated. Or, if he died before he migrated, then you have to look for the names of those whom you suspect were heirs. Also look under the listings for C = commissioner. A commissioner was frequently appointed by the county court to help the family distribute or sell the property All the heirs or the heirs of the heirs were involved--that is how I learned the names of the spouses of the female heirs. If you person did NOT own land, then try the court records for that county or a parent or progeny county. In Kentucky these records are called court order books (COBs). Since there were no credit cards, people frequently got in debt and then the creditors sued!!! A distant cousin helped me establish a linkage between my ancestor (conjectured) and his father when she found a bail bond--just lying around the courthouse (not filmed). We genealogists have to snoop a lot, and sometimes we have to demand that the county clerk let us see public records (if we cannot find a film which we can borrow). Birth records for the recent past are frequently off-limits, I found!!! But there are ways, so you have to learn those. (County clerks are not fond of genealogists--we leave their records in a mess, at times, naughty us!!) Also on the LDS website are guides for each of the US states (called research outlines) and for many foreign countires--England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Germany, Poland, and so on. Take a look by clicking around the website--all kinds of hidden goodies there. Sometimes the research outlines tell of records you have not thought about, for example, state censuses, or state military records. I hope you find your Harrises in Kentucky--and wherever else they may have been. My most recent Harris was a female--but, guess what, I found her death record in the 1860 mortality schedule. She died just before the Civil War, after a move from Kentucky to Texas. Harrises, like others, are where you find them! E.W.Wallace

    3. In the Circuit Court of the county Davis, State of Iowa a petition was filed by Elizabeth Harris on 1-23-1875 that she is the Widow of John H Harris who died on 1-14-1875 and that other heirs are Richard Harris, Merrick Harris, John Harris, Elizabeth J Pollard, Rachel A Masterson, David Harris, minor heirs of James Harris dec'd. and minor heirs of Wm Harris being grandchildren of dec'd. This was included in the Davis County Will Books for John H Harris. Know all men by these presents: that we John Masterson and Rachel A Masterson of Spencer County Indiana have this day appointed and by these presents do make constitute and appoint Richard Harris of Davis County Iowa our true and lawful attorney. Whereas, we Vicy Rinnert and John Rinnert her husband in the county of Spencer State of Indiana in June 1876 did appoint Milton R Harris, power of attorney, of Davis County Iowa to collect and receipt in our name a certain amount due us from the estate of John H Harris late of Davis County Iowa. Maybe this will help researchers of this Harris line as I keep everything close to Jacob and Eliza Harris in the hopes of finding the Harris line they belong to. 3. John H Harris, a son of William (Masterson) Harris line of Nelson County, Ky and Spencer County, Indiana, did migrate to Davis County, Iowa. This family and it's descendents belonged to the same church as Jacob and Eliza Jane (Slack) Harris. This line has all the best evidence to put Jacob as in the 1880 census, Jacob listed Ireland as father's birth place and Maryland as mother's birth place. With no documentation, I cannot place Jacob M Harris as the Harrises from the other two large clans, one from Madison County, Kentucky and one from the (Flippen) Harris line also have reasons to be possible family lines? Here is a good web site on D C Harris, a son of John Hunter Harris -- http://www.rootsweb.com/~iladams/pp1905/pp520.htm for those working on the Harrises from Hardin, Nelson, Madison Counties, Ky. also for a Jacob and William Harris connection, go to rootsweb boards for Virginia state and Culpeper County and search for William and Jacob Harris and Kannaday. 1. [HH] Eliza Jane (slack) Harris and Jacob Harris
    2. Mike Lamb
    3. Nice to see some activity on Hardin Co, KY. There is a lot of work to be done on the Harris family's who lived or had contact with Hardin Co, KY. I can help by placing Eliza Jane Slack who married Jacob M Harris on 10-03-1833 at the Severns Valley Babtist Church at Elizabethtown, KY. During the late 1840's Jacob and Eliza moved with their children to Davis Co, IA. They have many Harris neighbors that have connections back to Hardin and Madison Co, KY. W. H. Slack brother of Eliza Jane (Slack) Harris also moved to Davis Co, IA. Refer to message #830 on the Slack family genforum. I have good documentation on Eliza Jane (Slack) Harris. Jacob M Harris on the other hand we are unable to place him into any Harris line. Jacob was born in KY on 11-04-1810. Died on 10-05-1894 recorded in death records book#2 page#63 Wapello Co, IA. Jacob's death certificate states he is buried at Eldon, IA but we have not located it or a obit. Any leads or suggestions would be appreciated. 3. The following references to early Harris families were found in the land records of Franklin C., TN; Family lists were at best somewhat confusing plus I didn't take time to actually photo copy the record; I just wrote hurried notes. Edward Harris - January 1809; New Bern, NC Edward Harris; Military Service of Wm Meeks, State of North Carolina (warrant #) 2018; 20 Aug 1785; assignee E. Harris of Meeks (Meeks apparently bought the property and then resold it to Edward Harris Thomas K Harris; sale of slaves Samuel Harris Edward Harris, deceased; re. John Strother attorney in fact for James, William, Samuel, heirs of Andrew Harris, Samuel, Abner, Eli Harris, Margaret Rosborough, Mary McCollum, Rebecca Provence, (Mrs. Andrew Provence) Martha Sloan (Mrs. Robert Sloan) Permelia McCord (Mrs. Robert McCord, Lydia Stephenson (Mrs. John Stephenson,) Heirs of Edward Harris Brother - James Harris Sister - Peggy Rosborough Restated; Edward Harris was an heir of Andrew Harris. I think that the others were the heirs of Edward Harris. Samuel Harris 1814 (father of) Isaac Halen Harris and Samuel Overton Harris Isham Harris Robert B / or William B Harris - the record was unclear; mentions William B. Harris of Madison County, AL and Isaac Patrick Harris of Tuscaloosa County, AL. E or Eli Harris of Wilson County, TN; attorney for the heirs of late Judge Harris of New Bern, NC Samuel A Harris to John Harris, Franklin County, TN Samuel A Harris to Samuel Harris Peter Harris - witness to the record was Nehemiah Harris (my note: of Lawrence County, AL? ) Miniah Harris James Harris Sr. to Sarah Harris (love and affection for his daughter, Sarah for land originally patented by Samuel Harris Sr. deceased. Samuel A Harris and Sarah his wife; refers to Fergus Harris; Wilson County, TN. My original interest in Franklin County, TN was to find references to Mark M Harris which I had noticed in the land record index. However, Mark M Harris was only in the land records in conjunction with some estate business for Anthony Gilliam, deceased. Kristina Harris
