This may be of interest to some researchers. Please feel free to post to other lists, if appropriate. These two men were married to daughters of Richard Simpson, Sr. of Caswell Co., NC, formerly of Orange Co., NC and formerly of Fairfax Co., VA. Simpson's wife was the former Mary Kincheloe. Tyree Harris later lived in Caswell Co., formed 1777 from Orange Co., NC. Submitted by E.W.Wallace WILLIAM NUNN, Junior.. William Nunn of North Carolina., spouse of Ede Simpson and thus son-in-law of Richard Simpson II of Caswell Co. (Simpson is called II as his father in Fairfax Co., VA was called Sr., although Richard II later bore that suffix.) Nunn may be a younger man than the one found in Orange Co., NC records. There is no evidence that the family resided in Caswell Co. There is evidence that William Nunn, Jr. resided in Guilford Co., NC. Orange Co., NC Records 1755 Tax list of Orange Co.: William Nunn wt. [with] Sarah, Hanna, Joss & Jean, Negroes 1-4 (William Perry Johnson, "1755 Tax List of Orange County, North Carolina," THE NORTH CAROLINIAN ..., P. 103) At Orange Co., NC court, Aug 1764: "William Nunn, Sheriff, complains about the Prison." (This may be an older William Nunn.) >From Deeds Register of Orange Co., NC: 10 Feb 1767, the Trustees of Hillsboro' sold William Nunn 33 sq ft in Lot #99. On the same date, William Nunn sold 348 acres to William Comb. (Eve B. Weeks, REGISTER OF ORANGE COUNTY, NC DEEDS, 1752-1768 AND 1793.) He was one of the jurors listed by the sheriff of Orange Co., 22 Sep 1769, to the Superior Court at Hillsboro, NC. (From Orange Co. court records as listed in Saunders, THE COLONIAL RECORDS OF NORTH CAROLINA, VOL. 8 1769 to 1771 [Raleigh: 1890], p. 72) There is evidnece in Guilford Co., NC deeds of 1777 that William Nunn, Junr. resided in Guilford Co., NC. He was selling land to a brother-in-law of his wife, Ede Simpson. That brother-in-law was Tyree Harris, husband of Mary Ann Simpson (Harris's second marriage): Guilford Co., North Carolina DB 1-408: 10 Oct 1777 William Nunn, Junr. of Guilford to Tyree Harris of Orange, 400 pounds 519 acres land where William Nunn now lives, begin at a hicory on a line formerly Joseph Pinson's by Hick[ory?] Rock Cr., N 85 ch. to a white oak, E 72 ch. to a white oak, S 85 ch. to a red oak on the side of a fork of High Rock Cr., W 72 ch. along the line formerly Joseph Pinson's to the first station; signed: William Nunn, Ede Nunn; witness: Richard Simpson, John Peper; proved November 1777 Term by Peper. (William D. Bennett, CG, GUILFORD COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA DEEDS 1763-1784 [Raleigh: 1990] [NSDAR Library, July 2003]) In 1784 tax list of Caswell Co., St. David's district, where other sons-in-law of Richard Simpson appear, there is no listing for William Nunn. One Elijah Nunn is listed: 0-1-0. There is earlier evidence that a William Nunn resided earlier in Halifax Co., VA. Halifax Co., VA (DB 7-320): "Nov 1, 1768 from Thomas Tunstall of H[alifax] to William Nunn of King and Queen Co. 90 pds. about 400 acres which is the upper part of a greater tract of land patented Apr 10, 1751 to William Irby and by him sold to Daniel Williams who devised the same to be equally divided between his 2 sons James Williams & Joseph Williams by the conveyance from William Irby to Daniel Williams & by his will & the same was conveyed by Joseph Williams to Thomas Tunstall by deed recorded in H[alifax]. Signed - Thomas Tunstall. Wit - none. Recorded 19 Jan 1769 after a commission examined Ruth, the wife of Thomas Tunstall." (TLC Genealogy, HALIFAX COUNTY, VIRGINIA DEEDS 1767-1772, [Miami Beach: TLC Genealogy] p. 25) There is some indication William Nunn resided in Stokes Co., NC in 1795. Virginia Origins? Possibly the Nunn family was originally of Orange Co., VA, but there is no way at this time to make a connection to William Nunn of North Carolina. From John Frederick Dorman, ORANGE COUNTY DEED BOOKS 3 AND 4, 1738-1741; JUDGMENTS 1736 [Carlsbad CA PL Gen 975.5372 R2 DOR], p. 68 Part of a case "John Chapman vs. William Henderson [Deputy Sheriff] "Bond of John (O) Chapman of Spotsylvania County to Francis Nunn of the Province of Carolina for 2000 pounds of tobacco and 15 shillings or 150 pounds of tobacco and all fees in a suit in Spotsylvania County Court of Francis Nunn vs. John Chapman. Also signed by Francis (N) Nunn. Wit: Z. Lewis, Jno. Cristopher." ....... Was Elijah Nunn of this family, possibly a brother of William Nunn? His name appears under Caswell Co. in a list entitled "North Carolina Militia Paroled by Lord Cornwallis in 1781," transcribed by Kathleen B. Wyche and published in NORTH CAROLINA GENEALOGY SOCIETY JOURNAL....., p. 149.
Wouldn't you know that I would get my own genealogy wrong? I skipped an important ancestor, the one who is my namesake. Burr Harris had a son George, who had a son Joshua, who had a son Joshua Wren Harris, who had a son Calbraith Butler Harris, who had a son Joshua Wren Harris, Sr., who had a son Joshua Wren Harris, Jr. (me). J. Wren Harris, Jr. Albany, GA
The following is what I have on Burr Calvert Harris of Virginia and South Carolina, who I believe is one of my ancestors. I think that his son George Harris, had a son Joshua Harris, who had a son Calbraith Butler Harris, who had a son Joshua Wren Harris, Sr., who had a son Joshua Wren Harris, Jr. (me). Please let me know if any of the following is in conflict with the information that any of you have, or if you have information to add to this. Also, please let me know if you are working on this line, too. J. Wren Harris, Jr. Albany, GA Burr (Calvert) Harris; born circa 1709 in Stafford County (in the part made into Prince William County in 1731), Virginia; married Jean Haynie before 1732; died circa 1787 in Ninety-Six District, South Carolina;, buried in Harriss Cemetery, Newberry County, South Carolina., Burr (Calvert) Harris may be the first Harris, at least as far as his descendants are concerned. Records have been found in Virginia and South Carolina that indicate that he may have been born a Calvert or a Harrison. Researchers of this family have presented different ideas concerning exactly which Calvert and which Harrison may have been his parents. One idea is that he was born Burr Calvert and that he was the son of John Calvert (1692 - 1739) and Jean Harrison (1695 - 1739) and grandson of George Calvert (1688 - after 1739) and Elizabeth Doyne ( - after 1692). However, in the part of Virginia where he was from, many of the records have been destroyed by fires and by wars. The records that are needed to give definite proof of the relationship between Burr Harris and the Calvert and Harrison families of Virginia are among those records that are still missing and may never be found. An important clue to Burr Harris' ancestry is a deed registered in 1739 in Prince William County, Virginia for 200 acres of land. It states that Thomas Calvert alias Harrison and his wife Sarah transferred to John Carr "all my right and title of that track or parcel . . . on the north side of Quanticott Creek and Run, it being the land that Burr Harrison, deceased, left between George Calvert alias Harrison, Burr Calvert alias Harrison and Thomas Calvert alias Harrison". The deed was signed Thomas (his T mark) Calvert alias Harris and Sarah (her X mark) Calvert alias Harris. Notice that even though the name is Harrison in the body of the deed, whoever added their names beside their marks wrote Harris. The relationship between the Burr Harrison who left the land and these three Calvert alias Harrisons who received the land is not presently known., Also not known is why alias was used by members of this family, not only in this document, but in other documents found in Virginia and South Carolina. Some genealogists researching this family have considered these possibilities: 1. They may have been born as Calverts but raised by a Harrison relative. For example, if their mother was born a Harrison and their father born a Calvert, and for some reason the children were taken in and raised by their mother's parents (their Harrison grandparents), then they may have been called Harrison since they were being raised in a Harrison household. But on legal documents, they would have been referred to as Calvert alias Harrison to fully identify them. This would also help differentiate them from Harrison cousins with the same names., 2. They may have been illegitimate, born to a woman with a surname of Calvert and to a man with a surname of Harrison who had acknowledged his relationship with them. That was an acceptable arrangement at that time, provided that their father helped take care of their upbringing. This would normally have included their schooling, but something went wrong in this case because they could not sign their names and used various marks, instead (Thomas a capital T and Burr a capital B). Even if they were ordinarily called by the surname of the father, the mother's surname would be added for legal documents. 3. There may have been a falling out with the family in Virginia. This is what Mrs. Lois Scheck Pitts, a descendant of Burr Harris through his son, Micajah, had heard as a family tradition. Mr. C. B. Martin of Newberry County, South Carolina, in a letter dated 16 Jan 1916, stated, "Burr Calvert Harriss came from Virginia in early youth and his name was Harrison, but not fully agreeing with his family, changed his name to Harriss, severing all connections from Virginia people and would speak very little of them". The names of the family and the names of the family members varied widely on documents and in records. This was common when people couldn't sign their names themselves. Clerks of courts, census takers and others would have to spell the names the best that they could. Variations of the family surnames found on documents include Calvert, Colvert, Colbert, Harris, Harrison and Calvert Harris. From 1739 through 1763, Burr Harris appeared on legal documents in Virginia as Burr Calvert alias Harrison, Burr Calvert Harrison, Burr Calvert Jr. and Burdette Calvert. No documents dated after 1763 have been found with any of these various names in the area of Virginia that Burr (Calvert) Harris was from., Sometime before 1773, the family apparently moved to South Carolina. On 17 Jan 1773, Burr Calvert alias Harriss (also spelled Harris on the same document) of Craven County, South Carolina bought land in an area that was to become Newberry County, South Carolina from Jeremiah Williams Sr., also of Craven County, South Carolina, for the sum of "ten Shillings Current money of South Carolina". The land was "all that plantation orchard of land Containing Three hundred Acres lying and being in the fork between Broad and Saluda Rivers on branch of Second Creek Bounding on all sides with vacant Land Excepting fifty acres of said Tract of three hundred acres which said Jeremiah Williams did give unto Abraham Anderson lying and being on the NE side of the aforesaid tract of three hundred acres and hath such form, shape and marks as appear by a plat thereof to the original Grant annexed, together with all and Similar the houses, Edifices Buildings Barns yards orchards woods underwoods ! timber and timber trees Meadows pastures ponds Lakes fishings water water Courses paths passages profits Libertys privileges hereditaments rights members and appurtenances whatsoever thereunto belonging or in anywise appertaining, and the revision and revisions, remainder and remainders, issues profits thereof, and every part and paces". One of the witnesses to this deed was Obed Harriss., On 18 Jan 1773, Burr Calvert alias Harris of Craven County, South Carolina bought another tract of land from Jeremiah Williams Sr. of Craven County, South Carolina for four hundred pounds "Current Money of the R. Province". This land consisted of 300 acres of land "lying in the fork of Broad and Saludy River on branch of second Creek bounded with vacant land on all sides". Obed Harris witnessed this deed, also. After these deeds, the family seemed to have dropped the "Calvert alias Harrison" and all its variations, and appeared as Harriss or Harris on all subsequent documents. Craven County, mentioned in these deeds as Burr Harris' county of residence when these deeds were written, was a Proprietary County, and it was in existence from about 1682 until about 1785. Craven County covered about one-third of the state, roughly along and northeast of a line from Georgetown on the coast to Spartanburg, and would have included all or part of nineteen of the counties that are in existence today. However, the part of South Carolina that was made into Newberry County in 1785 was not inside the area that was included in Craven County, so Burr Harris must have moved first from Virginia to somewhere in Craven County and then to this land that he bought from Jeremiah Williams Sr. and that was to become part of Newberry County. Burr Harris built a house on the land that he bought. The house was used during the Revolutionary War as a hospital, and several Revolutionary War soldiers are believed to be buried nearby in the Harriss family cemetery. Burr's youngest son, Micajah, lived in the house after his father died, and it was passed down through his descendants to its last owner, Mrs. Lois Sheck Pitts, who was Burr Harris' great-great-granddaughter. She lived in the house and was proud to point out the original part that Burr built of hand-hewn wood. She was also proud of the family heirlooms in the house, including the old original deeds to the property, a table made by Micajah from curry maple grown on the farm, an inlaid secretary, brass andirons, bedsteads made of cherry wood, scratch mahogany mirror, old rush bottom chairs, old cotton loom and flax loom, spinning wheel and an old melodeon. One story is that when she was quite advanced in years, she bought her first gas stove to replace the woo! d stove that she had used all her life. The first night that she had it, the house burned down to the ground taking her and all of the family heirlooms with it. Burr (Calvert) Harris left a will on 26 August 1783 in Ninety-Six District, South Carolina. It was proven on 8 Mar 1787. The handwriting used in the body of this will appears very similar to the signature of one of the witnesses, Robert Rutherford, suggesting that he may have been the one who wrote the will. The handwriting, word choices and spelling are also very similar to those used in wife Jean Harris' will. Burr Harris' will is presented below in the original spelling: In the name of God Amen this twentey six day of Augst one thousand seven hundred and eightey three I Bur Harris of Nintey six district being sick in bodey but of perfect mind and memory thankes be to almighty god and calling to mind the unsertentey of Life I doo Decleare this my Last will & testement as follows Item I lend all my Estate both Real and Persnal to my Lving Wife Jean Harris as Long as she Lives Item I give after the death of my Wife all the Land I now Live on betwen my four sons Obed Thos. He went by the name of Cage. Micajah Harris served in the Revolutionary War, first as Lieutenant, then as Captain. On 13 May 1800, Micajah bought 65 acres of the land that his father had bought from Jeremiah Williams and that had been inherited by his brother, George Harris. The price was 20 pounds Sterling. On 2 Sep 1809, he bought 65 more acres of the land that his father bought from Jeremiah Williams that had been inherited by his brother, Obed Harriss. The price for this land was two hundred dollars. 32. viii. George Sr..
I'm hoping that someone on the list can tell me more about the Harris line from Stafford County, Va.. I believe that these were my Harris family and would love to learn more about them. Hi Ira, I am descended from Claiborne Harris who was in Anson Co. N. C. in 1800. I do not think he was descended from the Claiborne "Ned" Harris. He MAY be the son of William and Judith Hudson Harris but I don't know how to prove that except if I can find where my Claiborne had connections with 3 slaves that their son Claiborne bought at the estate settlement. I have not heard of Burr Calvert Harris. I suspect my Harrises were in Maryland because I found a Dorrel Young on a tax list in Maryland in 1756. Since my Claiborne and his descendants have Children named Dorrel Young Harris in 3 generations I wonder if he could be in this Burr Calvert Harris' line. How far back do you have on Burr? Where in Maryland were they?
My HARRIS line comes from Robert Harris and Elizabeth Boffee Boughey originally and upward to Asa Harris and Esther Root. Asa and Esthers' life begins, I belive, in Massachusetts and on to Vermont and then Trumbull Co., Ohio. They had 10 children beginning with Charles Edward. The others include Orland(o), Lucy Willard, Guernsey Roots, Sullivan Daniel, Esther, Louisa, George Henry, Annie and Daniel HARRIS. Most of these children, if not all, were born at Middlebury, Addison, Vermont. Do any of you Hunters have anything on this family; any of the siblings? Charles and Amanda had son Alford HARRIS who married Nettie Wolford and lived at Kent, Ohio. Alford and Nettie had son Claude Birdella HARRIS who was my grandfather. His name is my middle name. Thanks, John Claude Gummoe

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Ewestharris/WestHarrisDescenda nts.htm#c872 Just in case you haven't seen this web site. It doesn't answer any questions but I found it interesting in that it shed some light on one of the family lines that I am following namely Newson Harris. I'm still trying to figure out how Thompson Harris was related to my Alabama Harris families. (James and Joel Harris) The reason for my interest in Thompson was that he and Jane were listed in the same household as John P Harris in Rusk County, TX 1850. It appears that John and Elizabeth Shed Harris were native to Jefferson County, AL. They married in the same township as my ancestor and although I don't know how they were related, its pretty certain that they were kin. Thompson and Jane Beckham Harris migrated circa 1830 into Mississippi. Earlier, it appears that they were native to South Carolina. One way or another, the families were related to Isham G. Harris, the former governor of TN. I wish that I had new information but I haven't looked at anything new in several months. Maybe now that Christmas is over I can resume my search. Kristina Harris
Ira, You mention the West Harris line. I would really like to get this Harris line straight. Here is what I dug up from my files, but it could be very wrong. Can you or someone help me straighten it out? I thought that West Harris was the son of Edward Harris, b. ca. 1663-d. ca. 1734, and Mary Turner, Isle of Wight Co VA. West Harris had a brother named Daniel Harris. Daniel Harris, m. Jane Jordan and d. without a Will ca. 1765 in Bute Co NC, now abolished. Jane Jordan was from Surry Co VA and the younger daughter of George and Mary Jordan. I think that the elder Daniel Harris and his wife, Jane Jordan, had the following children : Jordan, d. in GA; Sarah, m. Sampson Munger; Sterling; Edward; Drury; Daniel m. Rhoda; Tabitha Tabby, m. 1785 to James Walker; and Briton [Brittain]. The younger Daniel Harris' Estate sale was in 1822 in Franklin Co NC. Does some of this make sense. I am particularly interested in any information on any Gray Harris. I have identified at least three different Gray Harrises born around 1803-1807 in NC. My Gray Harris was in GA in time to marry a Nancy Fuller in 1824. Nancy Fuller's ancestors were from Granville Co NC. Another Gray W. Harris apparently stayed in NC, and there was a Gray Harris in TN of about the same age. Of some interest might be the following information that I pieced together several years ago. My research has grown cold, but it may still be useful to someone. Here it is: A Jordan and Drury HARRIS were in GA in the early 1800s, probably Carroll and/or Greene counties GA. They may have been in GA even before 1800. Jordan died in GA and left a Will about 1820. I assume that both Jordan and Drury HARRIS came from Franklin Co NC or proximity thereof and are the descendants of Edward Harris and Jane Jordan, Isle of Wight Co VA. For example, Jordan HARRIS of GA was an heir of Brittain HARRIS, d. about 1815 in Franklin Co NC. Brittain died without a Will, but left land to his heirs. A Daniel HARRIS was administrator of Brittains Estate. This Daniel was probably Brittains brother and the Daniel Harris whose Estate Sale was in 1822 Franklin Co NC. Deeds show that Jordan Harris left some of this land to his own heirs. A presumed relative of theirs, a Henry Harris, visited friends in Washington Co GA ca 1800 and brought back letters from friends in GA to their families in Franklin Co NC. I have read three ca 1805 letters from Washington Co GA that survive in the Estate Papers of a William Jackson (NC Archives). The letters are from William Jacksons brother, Julius Jackson, who encouraged folks in Franklin Co NC to move immediately to Washington Co GA. In fact, Julius offered someone $100 to move. It is in one of these letters that Julius states that he and others sent letters back to NC with Henry Harris but he, Julius, had not received a reply as yet. Any help will be appreciated. Greetings to all, >From what I have been able to determine, through personal research and conversations with many persons, I believe that there were at least three different Harris lines in Granville County, North Carolina during the late 1700's to early 1800's. One of the Harris lines goes back to Burr Calvert Harris. This line goes back to Maryland, and forward into Mississippi and Texas. One of the Harris lines is the West Harris line. This family line spread throughout the southeastern United States. One of the Harris lines is the line of Claiborne "Ned" Harris. This line supposedly goes back to Robert Harris of Ware Creek, York County, Virginia. Part of this line, as best I can tell, went into Tennessee and then into Alabama and Mississippi. Part of the line went into Kentucky and Indiana. Two other parts of this line went into Georgia. Part of this line went into South Carolina. QUESTION: Does anyone know of any other documented lines that are in Granville County between 1750-1810? Please post that information. Any help or insight is appreciated. Please respond through HH or H-NC so that others may be helped. Ira L. Harris III Evansville, Indiana
Hi. Am looking for any information on my third great grandfather Amos Harris and his forebears. Amos was born on November 29, 1809 in Vermont. His first wife was Polly Phelps who was born September 26, 1811 in Milton, VT. Their marriage registration, is dated December 19, 1838, in Milton, VT, and signed by the justice of the peace, Joseph E. Rhodes. Polly Phelps passed away on October 29, 1866 in Vermont. Family tradition has it that Amos's forebears were Green Hill Mountain Boys of Vermont who served under Ethan Allen. Their son Edwin Lorenzo, my second great grandfather, was born on October 10, 1839 in Milton, Chittenden County, Vermont. The birth dates for Edwin and his four siblings are given in the 1850 census. George Henry was born on April 25, 1842 also in Milton Vermont. He married Bur Maple?, died on December 16, 1861 in the Civil War, and was buried at the cemetery in Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. Silas Wright was born on September 13, 1844 in Milton,Vermont as well. Horatio Washington was born on September 22, 1846. Ellen Cornelia was born on November 16, 1849, married Rowlee?, and died on June 30, 1930.

JOHN HARRIS, son of Joseph Harris and Martha RYAN was born 01 Dec 1802 in Washington County, PA. He was educated in the common schools of those days, but having a strong desire for education, he entered as a student and graduated at Washington College in Washington County, Pa., in 1827. After graduation he went south and taught school in South Carolina for one or two years. From there he went to Covington, Georgia where he became acquainted with, and married Susan Ann Henderson of Oglethorpe County, Georgia, 8 December 1831. They had eleven children ---six sons and five daughters. Susan Ann Henderson was the daughter of Isaac P. Henderson and Sarah Bridges. In Covington, Georgia, Mr. Harris went into merchandising for a while then gave it up and bought a farm and a number of Negroes, and commenced raising and buying cotton, which occupation he followed the rest of his life. He was a man who took an active part in politics and in Masonry. He took a great deal of interest in institutions of learning. He shared the first honors with Henry R. Wise who was afterwards Governor of the State of Virginia. He was a man of considerable consequence in Georgia. He held many offices of trust and honor. He was Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of the State of Georgia for six years. He was in the Legislature a number of times, and at one time a President of a bank. His life was mainly devoted to farming and buying cotton, in which he amassed quite a fortune. He owned 140 slaves at one time, but almost everything he had was swept away by the consequences of the war. He made himself very unpopular in the section in which he lived, during the war, by his firm Union principles. He was always a Republican, and after the war was over, he was elected Senator to the Legislature from his district, in spite of the great opposition to him. I think I would be happy with a theory to follow up on. I spent a day this summer going over old news papers at the archives in Des Moines, IA., checked Eldon, Bloomfield, and Ottumwa for an obit.
