Hi... Once again, I'm working on "untangling" my Harris family. My first question is about Isham Harris and his spouse(s). The information handed down through my family is that Martha Rowland is my ancestor, but most of the posted information lists Isham's wife as Mable Martha Green. One database shows him with both as wives, marrying Martha Rowland abt. 1756 in Granville Co., NC and Mable Martha Green 1761 in Granville Co, NC. I know Isham's will lists his wife as Martha, but both were named Martha so that doesn't solve the problem. Both Rowland and Green appear as names of descendants, so that doesn't solve it either. Does anyone have documentation on these wives, and if so, which children go with which wife? Secondly, my family information shows Ransom Harris II as the father of Hanson Harris (b. abt. 1810 - info from the 1850 Census of Granville Co.) Hanson Harris married Marina Cole (daughter of John & Susannah Cole) on Dec. 22, 1830 in Granville Co., NC. Their children were Rowland Harris (b. 1828) and Willis Nelson Harris (b. Sept. 28, 1832 in Granville Co., NC) - both listed in the 1850 Census. Do anyone have any reference to Hanson Harris and his ancestors? I have no proof of this info, but it was given to me with specific dates as if copied from a family bible or the like. I do know the Harris family bible was passed to a daughter of Willis Harris. When she died, all her belongings went to a niece who either discarded it or has it packed away in her belongings and refuses to answer questions about the family. (Sigh!) Does anyone have any information on Hanson Harris? I know he remained in Granville Co., unlike most of his siblings and cousins. If anyone is interested in this line, I'll be happy to post what I have. Caroline McCall

Another researcher may have more to add to my note but just wanted to say that death records may or may not be available for certain locations. In the mid west, records were started in the late 1800's but in the south, I don't think it was even mandatory for the local governments to maintain records until after about 1910 or 1920. If you research through the LDS Family History Center, you may want to check to see whether there are records listed in the Library Catalog. The library catalog is online however, I prefer to use the microfiche where I actually research even though its not up to date any more. I haven't quite figured out how to use the computerized system. My only experience with death records is in my Alabama research. There, the records were found under the topic, Alabama and then Death Records. You may also be able to obtain the records (if one exists) through a state agency like the Department of Health. However, keep in mind that they are expensive to obtain, the agency may state up front that they will only search a limited "time frame" and they don't refund money. So, if you don't mind taking the chance, then this may be a good way to get the records. However, I don't completely trust clerks to do my research and I don't have much money to spend so I usually look for the microfilm and research it myself. Another possibility: if death records exist for the time in which your ancestor died, and the microfilm is available through the LDS you can pay them to locate the record. However, they will only research known information so you still need to know whether the record exists. For that information you need to find the index. Also, the local health department may have maintained death before state records were started so don't forget to check both state and local agencies. I was fortunate to find a death record for my gg grandmother in the Jefferson County (AL.) Health Department (1900) but it didn't contain any information besides date and cause of death. I don't even know for sure it was the right Susan Harris. Old records are sometimes unpredictable. Kristina Harris
My ggrandmother Exa (Eva) M Harris died in Poughkeepsie, NY Nov. 11, 1892. Where do I send to to get a death cert. on her? She is buried along with her son & husband in the Rural Cemetery in Poughkeepsie, NY. Thank you & God Bless, Jane
To the person looking for parents of one Benjamin Franklin Harris reportedly born in Erie Pennsylvania ca 1857. I have a suggestion: One people-finding tool which many people overlook are city directories, sometimes county directories. These were published about every other year. They generally list all the employed people in a community, giving their residence address, their place of employment, and occupation (generally). Then you need to look for a listing for the employer to learn more. (My German born ancestor, who became a blacksmith, generally worked for a firm with a German name.) At the back of the book, there frequently is a reverse directory. That is, the residence address is listed and then perhaps every adult person in the household is listed, even if not employed. I have picked up the names of widows in that manner. (This is not foolproof method, but give it a try, at least for cities, small towns, and see if there is one for the county you are researching.) No, these are NOT telephone directories. These were more or less trade directories, compiled for many uses, but perhaps for door-to-door salesmen. Government agencies used these a lot before telephone directories came along. They were published in many places as late as the mid-1950s. Note the list for Erie, PA below, which I obtained (and partially copied) from a PLACE search in the Family History Library Catalog located on www.familysearch.org I typed in Erie and then Pennsylvania [no abbreviations allowed] in a Place search, went down the list of topics to Directories, clicked on that. As indicated at the bottom, there are more directories for Erie, PA. If the film number given by the Fam Hist Library begins with 6 million, say, 600,000,001, then that film is on a microfiche, and will cost you 15 cents apiece. Just be sure that you know how many fiche are in a collection. I see the first few directories listed above are on microfiche, beginning with 6,xxx,xxx. (I told a lady about some microfiche for a collection at FHL she would like to have. There were so many fiche, that she would have to pay $70 plus.) The microfiche will stay at your local LDS Family History Center. If you are not acquainted with FHCs, start browsing the list given on the URL above. Most films held by FHL in Salt Lake City can be borrowed through your local FHC for a small fee, for a limited time. Microfiche, however, don't take up much space and generally held permanently at the FHC. Happy hunting! Hi. Was just wondering if there is a web site where one can view the emails for the Harris Hunters mailing list and if so what is it. Thanks. G
I am looking for info on my elusive grandfather, Benjamin Franklin Harris. Death cert. lists him as b in Erie, PA in 1857. He died Nov. 1, 1940 in Southfield. Michigan. He may have lived in OH at some point in his life. No parents or other kin are known. He married Clare M. Crawford(Crofford) in 1879 in Allen County, IN.. He was found on the 1880 census there & on the 1900 census in Whitely County, IN. At some point the family lived in DeKalb County, IN where my father Benjamin Frank Harris ll was born April 17, 1893. No records there. He listed his trade as a Blacksmith. Apparently he was a renter & never owned land. The family moved after 1900 to Detroit Michigan or in near vicinity. to Detroit. Children, all b in Indiana were Albert Harris b 1882;Bertha or Beula b 1885;Harry (Jay) b 1888;Alza (f) b 1990;Benjamin b 1893;& Russel b 1895. Anyone with knowledge of this my Harris line I would appreciate hearing from you Thank You, RHarris

Sarah, Thanks for your note. I've been searching for information on Thompson and Jane (Beckman) Harris. I've stumbled across several people who supposedly had knowledge about the family but so far, haven't discovered anything that I didn't already know. It's a link that I'm extremely interested in but still a little too far removed to spend time and money pursuing. So, I have confined my search to primarily free resources like census records; at one point, I also ordered the land records of Monroe County, MS. All that I can say is that it appears that my family crossed paths with Thompson and Jane Harris. I'm pretty sure that my branch of the family migrated into Alabama from Tennessee. The matriarch was probably Sarah Swinney Harris who may have been native to Bedford County, TN. Her 1st husband was James Harris. He died 1830 - 1833; her BLM land entry file identified her as a widow. Then she ended up back in Jefferson County, AL (from Green / Pickens County, AL) where my ancestor was born (1838.) She was probably married to Joel Harris although I haven't found a record. The LDS library catalog identifies a number of pages missing from the marriage records of Jefferson County. The census records of James Harris (1830 Green County) identified 2 male children and 1 or 2 girls. I have pretty much identified the eldest son as William M. Harris. The second son may have been John P Harris who ended up in Thompson's household in Rusk County, TX. 1850. I found marriage records for a 3rd male in Jefferson County (James M Harris) who may also have had ties to Sarah Harris but whether he was her son or the son of Joel Harris --- I don't know. In any case, James M Harris (and my direct ancestor, General M Harris) died in the Civil War. James married Susan Ritch and had 2 daughters and they married into the Latham and Hitt families. John P Harris ended up in Texas (Rusk and Hopkins Counties and then he died after about 1873. So far, I've been unable to find out when or where either he or Elizabeth died. Some of their children ended up in Oklahoma. I've also looked for Jane Harris whose descendents did some research into the Beckham family; they claim that she was alive until after 1880 but to date, have not found any sign of her. She would have been over 80 years old by 1880. One record shows a Jane Harris (+ 84 ) in Georgia but don't know whether or not it is her. I found an index entry for a property transfer (Thompson to Jane Harris ) in Rusk Count, TX. which leads me to believe that Thompson died about 1853 or so but the actual record was destroyed in a courthouse fire. Every time I find new information I end up in a burn county or records destruction from the Civil War. Any new ideas are always welcome. Dear Emma in New Mexico, you wrote: I am searching (in vain it seems) for parents, siblings of Levi Harris. He married Dorothy Bozeman in Monticello Florida , Jefferson County in Dec 1831. Their daughter Tamzy Harris was my great grandmother. Some family history says he originally came from Maine, but no proof. Any tidbit of info greatly appreciated. Emma in NM Suggestion: Since you are in New Mexico, you probably have an LDS family history center near you. A list of these centers around the world is found on www.familysearch.org Look in the lower right hand corner. (Also check out the FHL catalog in that same area of the website at a later time.) If such a FH center is near you, call them and ask what their opening hours are. Then ask whether they have hundreds of microfiche called AIS = Accelerated Indexing System. Many centers, particularly older ones, do have this rather helpful people-finder. Again, this is on microfiche. What is AIS? This is a rather comprehensive (but flawed) census index to all the US censuses through 1850, and for some western states and territories, it goes beyond 1850. Each census, after the first ones, is in a different search. (Search 1 pertains to the earlier censuses plus has some tax lists to make up for missing censues.) When the censuses list everyone in the family, as in the 1850 census, then the later searches divide into areas of the US. There may be a free four-page handout at your local LDS center to explain how to use this valuable index. But, with patience, you can teach yourself by jumping in and observing how this index works. Caution: There is a high error rate--misspellings, duplications, omissions, and so on, but still professionals use this index a great deal when beginning with a new ancestor, say, for a client. Since you believe your Harrises were old enough to get married in 1831, why don't you start with the 1840 census to try to find Levi Harris in the AIS? Then move backwards. Did Florida have marriage bonds, as many Southern states did? Then find out who the bondsman is? Did either the bride or the groom need consent of a parent or a guardian? Marriage bonds, when they can be found, are a great people-finder. Check out Levi's neighbors and do a fair amount of research in the state where he landed in 1840. You may find some clues in the people with whom he associated. In the 1840s, there were few if any railroads, and unless people traveled by boat, they probably didn't move huge distances. Native Americans were still a menace, and so people frequently moved in groups for protection--also from bears and snakes [and in Florida, other strange critters]. Levi's neighbors in 1840 may have come from the same place he did. You are going to have a lot better luck by tracing the movements of the Bozemans. Look for Harrises in the neighborhoods (counties) where the Bozemans are found. Ordinarily, unless the family was really desperately poor and they needed to marry off a daughter to have one less face to feed, the family needed to know something of the background of the prospective groom. Therefore, you probably will find Harrises somewhere in the neighborhood of the Bozeman families. You need to know a little of the history of Florida in the time period when these folks married. An encyclopedia (or a children's book) may help you get this info in a hurry! Also, while you are at it, also study the history of Georgia. Until the Indians ceded large parts of Georgia, there wasn't much territory in the populated part of Georgia until after the American Revolution. After the Revolution, people poured into Georgia, because land was easy to acquire. My North Carolinians migrated there, for example, but also some collateral families from Virginia. And Harrises are like hares--they proliferate a lot!!! I hope the AIS will help you locate some likely Harrises. At least, your Harris does not have a first name like Robert, Richard, William!!! But his father and his grandfather may have some of those names!!! Happy hunting!

Ira, Could you please tell me what information you have on this Burr Calvert Harris? I would like to see how he might relate to the Burr Calvert Harris of Virginia and South Carolina. J. Wren Harris, Jr. Albany, GA -----Original Message----- From: Ira L. I am searching (in vain it seems) for parents, siblings of Levi Harris. He married Dorothy Bozeman in Monticello Florida , Jefferson County in Dec 1831. Their daughter Tamzy Harris was my great grandmother. Some family history says he originally came from Maine, but no proof. Any tidbit of info greatly appreciated. Emma in NM
