Was just wondering when the Harrises first showed up in England and Scotland. Know they were in Kent in the early 1600s and in Glocester in the 1500s and were septs of the Campbells and Macleods earlier still. (The MacLeods came into existence around 1200 or so.) Are they records of Harrises in Britain before the Norman conquest? Were they originally of Celtic or Anglo-Saxon origin. Have also heard that Harris antecedents were Mac en Ruigs.

Ira, Though we are not to my knowledge directly related to the Pinckney Harris family from Newberry County, South Carolina, my family GG Grandfather, Lawrence Pinckney Harris moved from Darlington County, South Carolina to Texas in 1873. He was born in Darlington in 1847. His father, Britton H. Harris was born in 1803 and grew up in Darlington, SC. We are not certain who Britton's father is since he died when Britton was a small child, but there is some speculation that his name was Daniel based on census records. We also know that Britton's mother's maiden name was Holloman. If you have any records of your family having cousins that fit this description, please let me know. Have any of you had good research luck with Maryland links at http://www.vitalrec.com/mdlinks.html I don't think my Harrises were ever in Maryland, but some of my Northern Neck folks sneaked across the Potomac, it seems. I have noted that in recent years more and more records of Maryland are being published. Perhaps some can be borrowed on interlibrary loan. Get a list of books which you covet and talk to your public librarian about interlibrary loan. ILL is a lot easier with the internet than it used to be when one had to fill out tons of paper, hoping one book might show up someday at your public library. E.W.Wallace
