    1. [HH] Some Robert Harrises in Caswell Co., NC and in Surry Co., NC
    2. One of the Harris-Hunters was complaining that no one ever posted anything about Harrises in Surry Co., NC. Perhaps those in Surry Co., NC had roots in Caswell Co., NC (not proved). As this male is not in my direct line, I will probably do no more searching on him. If you use this material in your own work, please cite the sources where I have given them. (If someone cannot replicate your work, then it is not good research.) E.W.Wallace ROBERT HARRIS, son of TYREE HARRIS. (b. ca 1768, probably in Orange Co., NC; d. bef Dec 1798, Caswell Co., NC) Refer to the biography of his father Tyree Harris concerning Robert's guardianship Oct 1787 (Caswell Co. court minutes). His brother, Sampson [Simpson] Harris also choose the same guardian in 1787. A Robert of Granville Co. appears early in Caswell Co. deed books. The following almost certainly applies to the son of Tyree Harris: Caswell Co. DB F-193-4 Cornelius Dabney of CC to Robert Harris of same, for 160 pds, 200 A on Hoster's Cr. (Horsley Cr) 18 July 1789. Wit: Duke Williams, Tyree Harris. (Katherine Kerr Kendall, CASWELL COUNTY DEED BOOKS 1777-1817 [Easley, SC: Southern Historical Press, 1989]. p. 111) According to will of his father Tyree Harris, 1786, Caswell Co., NC, Robert was to get land in Rockingham Co. on Little Troublesome Cr. Robert's mother, according to a correspondent, was the elder Tyree's second wife, Mary Ann Simpson. Robert's widow was reportedly Agnes Payne. Agnes Payne Williams, widow, married Marmaduke Williams Dec 25, 1798. A Different Robert Harris? That a Robert Harris, apparently not the same one who was deceased in Caswell Co., as his widow had remarried in 1798, lived for a time in Rockingham Co., NC is shown in the following Caswell Co. deed: DB M-278 Robert Harris of Rockingham Co., NC to Elijah Brown, for 50 pds., sale of 2 bay mares named Pol and Fly. 31 Oct 1801. Condition of obligation: Robert Harris will pay unto Joseph Scott $83 for which Brown is security by 1 Nov 1802; 1/2 money paid by May 1802. Wit: Henry Tarrant, George Wilks. (Ibid., p. 230) However, the date of this deed conflicts with the administration of Robert Harris in Caswell Co. on 23 Oct 1797. There is a will in Surry Co., NC, is puzzling. There seems to be some connection to Tyree Harris and/or his deceased son Robert Harris. The given names of the children reflect a connection to those Harrises of Albemarle Co., VA, and earlier of Louisa Co. and Hanover Cos., VA. The notes appended to the abstract of those of the author/compiler, Jo White Linn: [Surry Co. Will Bk] 3:93a. Will of Robert Harris, 10 July 1806. Son Elijah to have homeplace bought from Robert Lanier. Sons: Tyree, Bezeleel Brown, Bernice. Dau. Lucretia. Other children: Mourning Burch, Nancy Boon, heirs of son Robert, Lucy Head, heirs of Patsy Tanner, heirs of Sarah Blackwell. My granddau: Milly Harris. Exrs: son Bezeleel and Elijah. Wit: Joseph Forkner, Jesse McKenney, Elijah Davis. Proved by wit. Rec. Nov. Ct. 1809. [Note: SCDB A:263, 1 Apr 1778, Robert Lanier to Robert Harris of Albemarle Co., VA, for L400 VA money, 200 A on E side Tarrarat R., wit. John Harris, Benjamin Pettit, John Lynch. The 1785 Surry Co. tax list of Capt Humphris shows the following Harrises: Robert Harris, 600 A, 1 wp {white person}, 5 bp; Jonathan Harris, 1 wp; John Harris, 250 A, 2 wp, 1 bp; Moses Harris, 200 A, 1 wp. The 1790 Surry Co. census, p. 186, Robert Harris, 1 WM 16+, 1 WM-16, w WF. 1800 Surry Co. census: Robert Harris, 1 WM 26-45; Robert Harris, 1 WM 16-26, 1 WM 26-45, 1 WM 45+, 9 slaves. There are loose estates papers at the NC Archives.] (Jo White Linn, Surry County, North Carolina wills, 1771-1827 : annotated genealogical abstracts [Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co.]) PS If you subscribe to Harris-Hunters of NC, feel free to post this message to that list. If we don't share, we will never complete our family histories!!!

    1. [HH] Harrises in Nelson Co., KY of Early Date (Ira's Posts of Recent Date)
    2. If any subscribers suspect one of those Harrises in early Nelson Co., KY were of Virginia origin, it may be well to check with what is called The 1787 Census of Virginia. (Nelson Co., then Virginia, was formed 1784, several years before Kentucky became a commonwealthy in 1792.) This hefty compilation (three fat volumes, with the 3rd volume being the index to the previous two volumes) is not a census at all, but in many ways, I feel these personal property tax lists are superior to the 1790 censuses, where those censuses still exist. A number of years ago, two dedicated ladies--Netti Schreiner-Yantis and Florine Speakman Love--took the 1787 personal property tax lists of each Virginia county and compiled these lists. There may be several tax lists for each county, depending on how many districts there were in a county. As Nelson Co. KY in 1787 (as well as several other large Kentucky counties) was a part of Virginia, the predecessors of those Harrises in later Nelson Co. may appear. (No guarantees in genealogy, that is why we have to search SO MANY records!) At one time, and probably still, the authors and some genealogical booksellers, sold individual county booklets for far less money than the three bound (and hefty, I say again) volumes. However, you may be missing a BIG clue if you opt for the county booklet only. Why? Because some of these people owned personal property (real property is NOT listed) in both Virginia and in Kentucky, and you may overlook that fact!!! Only by going over these volumes again and searching all the Harrises listed in the index (in Vol 3) did I discover that my Christopher Harris of Albemarle Co., VA also had personal property in Madison Co., KY. He was in the process of migrating. Remember: The 1787 Census of Virginia These volumes may be hard to find in your neighborhood, but consult with your public librarian and ask about interlibrary loan. And do not overlook your State Library as a source for borrowing some genealogical books. Long before the internet, genealogists were pestering their public librarians for interlibrary loans, and some of us were put off by the librarians because it was a LOT of paper work for them. With so many library catalogs online, and a special network for librarians, interlibrary loan is easier than formerly. May you be successful in your searches for Harrises!!! E.W.Wallace

    1. [HH] Harris Line IN/OH/PA/USA
    2. Looking for information on a MORGAN HARRIS found on the 1860 census in Allen County, IN & 1870 census in DeKalb County, IN. as head of household. Exact migration of this HARRIS line is not documented, but possibly were from OH and/or PA. Since his first name is unusual (if that is his given name).maybe someone has come across it. RHarris

    1. [HH] Opinions not welcome
    2. Glenn E. Harris
    3. To All, I am on this list because of genealogy. Today I received a dozen junk e-mails concerning personal opinions. A few of the e-mails did contain some genealogy info but most went to my trash bin. If you have an opinion then please send it to Pam or Ira directly, or even me if you don't like this opinion.. Why am I sending this to the list then. Because there are too many of you to contact personally. I am on a dozen lists, as many of you are, and really have no time for all this cyber bashing. PLEASE GO BACK TO GENEALOGY !!!

    3. It's great to see this list so active and to see so much good work being posted by Ira. I am enjoying reading and hoping I'll see my Lucretia HARRIS ROGERS someday. Lucretia HARRIS md. Daniel ROGERS abt 1781 in Edgefield Dist., SC. She was b. 8 Sept 1765 and died c. 1870. One source says she died in MS, but I don't really know about that. Lucretia's children were: Felix, Elizabeth, Mary, James, Lewis, Amelia, Sutley/Sutton, Sarah, Daniel, III; Lucretia Harris, David, Littleberry "Berry," Jane, and Nancy. One source says that she is the child of John HARRIS, II and wife Mary PICKENS. The dates don't work for this, but it is poss. that John HARRIS, II, was Lucretia's brother. The dates work for that, but I have no proof. If John were her brother, then her parents would be John HARRIS, b. c1745 and Mary Dashiell HANDY. She is not among their documented children's names, so again, I don't know. At one point I thought Lucretia HARRIS was linked to Jenkins HARRIS. Daniel ROGERS received his first land grant of 250 ac. in 1764 and sold it to Jenkins HARRIS. The name Lucretia HARRIS has been given to many of the ROGERS girls thru the generations so she must have been a revered woman by her family. I would appreciate any info anyone has about her or her parentage. Anything is always better than not knowing anything at all! Thank you! God bless, Dolores Miller Pringle

    1. [HH] Hi from Nancy
    2. Hi to everyone, Thank you Ira for all your info,I dont think my family has any connection at least none I have found so far but I have found very little. A while back I had someone write to me re my Harris family but lost her address and am so sorry. I have a very nice gentlemen from New Brunswick helping me. This lady wanted to compare notes if you would write to me I will share what I have. My Harris family started in Malton Ma, most likely came from England the generation before that I am just guessing. My gf s family took him to New foundland when he was about six. His name was Herbert Vaughn Harris and eventually he left New Foundland and relocated to Moncton New Bruniswick. He married Dorcas Marie Humber,he was inspector for the police dept. and was very well known, he belonged to the Orangeman and the knights of Apithas!.They had 14 children and seven died early in their life. If this sounds familiar to anyone please write! Thank you and a very special thank you to Bruce if you are in this group! Nancy

    3. Hello, Harris kinfolk. I too wish to thank Ira for his willingness to share his wealth of information. I enjoy reading it and keep hoping one day he will post something about my Mark Harris of Dickson Co TN. Mark popped up as Head of Household there,in 1840, seemingly out of nowhere. I think I must be his only descendant since nobody else seems to be researching him! Keep up the good work,Ira, and thanks. Sue --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! 1. [HH] Re: My Emails
    2. Ira L. Harris III
    3. Dearest HARRISHUNTERS, I thank you for the many kind words you have sent. I appreciate them and find it encouraging that I am perhaps helping others. Over the past three months I have had several people contact me and tell me that the only resource they have access to is the internet. Several mentiond restrictions such as age, health, where they live, and the fact that there are no genealogical libraries within several hundred miles of where they live. If I can help one of them, then my meager efforts have been worth it. I have a superb genealogical library here in Evansville. They have many resources (as you can tell by my emails) and are most helpful in my quest for greater Harris knowledge. I have researched mostly Southern Harris' because that is where my line(s) run. My direct line, the best I can tell, starts with Robert Harris of Ware Creek, York County, Virginia.(The one who for so many years was given the "ficticious" wife called Mary Claiborne Rice) They then went into Granville County, North Carolina, to Pendleton Dist., S.C., then into Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi. Therefore it is only natural that I predominantly focus on Southern Harris'. Recently, however, I have found that some of my line perhaps came out of Kentucky and Tennessee into Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and Iowa. In the "near" future, you will see postings by me from these areas. I would like to encourage some of you with Northern Harris roots to start posting your northern Harris family information on the HH website. I am curious as to how the Pennsylvania Harris line fits in the overall Harris line. Sometimes we get bogged down in our particular line and fail to see the overall picture. The more we post for posterity the more we will be able to help each other sort out this wonderful mess called the Harris Family, and help the many "newbies" who come on board after us. Have you also considered what will happen to your research after you have passed on? Several years ago, a group of HH'ers got together and worked on the connection between England and several Southern lines. Perhaps this could be done with Pennsylvania and some of the Northern Lines. Or, perhaps several small groups could work together on specific states. There is much more that I could say. But I must get off my soapbox and get back to work. Thank you for your support of HH and the other HH sites. The more we learn, the easier it will be to sort out our lines. Ira L. Harris III (male) Evansville, Indiana

I wish I had a person like Ira on some of my other lists. Most subscribers just lurk on the list and hope someone will send some data they can use. My Harrises are from New Jersey and other northern states, but do I get upset because Ira just sends message about Souther Harrises? 3. Keep Up The Good Work Ira. I don't know why some people subscribe to a list like this then complain because we have a good samaritan who posts all this good Harris data. I wish I had a person like Ira on some of my other lists. Most subscribers just lurk on the list and hope someone will send some data they can use. My Harrises are from New Jersey and other northern states, but do I get upset because Ira just sends message about Souther Harrises? No I do not because he is definitely helping some one and that is part of the hobby of genealogy, helping others. Thank you Ira, I don't think you get enough thanks! Richard G. Boyd, Harris-Hunters Listowner

    3. You can save them or archive them. Read them later. I scan them for my ancestors that passed through KY in the early 1800's. Takes no time at all. 3. Ira, Could you please take a break from posting these numerous Harris messages that you are sending? I think there are so very many you are posting that the rest of us can't keep up with (at least I cannot.) And certainly all the records you are posting to the list encompass VERY many different Harris families from very many different locations. If you take some time (2-7 days) between postings, it seems to me that people might be more able to absorb and digest the postings you are sending out, and might be able to better connect their descendants to some of the lines you are posting. --- Also, you do not seem to be including any records at all from the areas that my own Harrises came from [Culpeper Co., VA & Surry/Wilkes, NC.]. I would like to be able to connect with some other Harrises from my own lines that you do not seem to have any records of. Could you just please take a break from posting this total and all-encompassing Harris info, and give the rest of us a chance to ask questions that we need to? THANKS SO MUCH!
