We were told that we were of Native American descent and am curious if other Harris' were told the same and if there is any merit to it. From the way the article is written I get the impression that these Harris men are tied in with the Harris' of Madison County, Kentucky. 1. Dog Tags - Story Found on Another Message Board
    2. Glenn Gohr
    3. I received this from another list and thought it may be of interest to our members. I found two Harrises listed: Harris, D.L. Harris, Roger W. Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Wl.2ADIB/8693 Message Board Post: On a recent "Today Show" there was a story about two men who went to Hanoi on a business trip. The men encountered a guy selling old GI dog tags from US servicemen who were killed during the Viet Nam War. They were disgusted by the thought of this man profiting from the sale of these tags. Upon returning to the U.S., they decided to go back to Viet Nam and purchase ALL the dog tags. They did so, paying 19 cents per tag! They brought home several hundred tags. The plan is to return the tags to surviving family members, when they can find them. The process has already begun with one set being turned over to a grieving Mom on July 4th, (coincidentally, it was on her birthday)! These two men have set up a website, "http://www.founddogtags.com" listing the names of all those whose tags they purchased. If you lost friends, family, or know of someone who lost a loved one in Viet Nam, I suggest you check out this website. If you recognize a name, there's an e-mail address to contact these two men and to help in their efforts to return the dog tag to it's rightful survivor. I'm sure a family member would be eternally grateful to have such an important item returned. Please help by checking this website. And please send the website address to everyone you know. The more people who see the lists, the greater the chance of returning ALL the tags to those who lost loved ones in Viet Nam!

    3. Gwena, I suspect that my Harris line may have descended from your Isaac; some of his descendants did migrate to TN but I have nothing to connect them. I found your Garland connection interesting....A Mary Garland b1654 in Boston MA married Thomas Carr, an immigrant from England. Their g-g-grand-daughter Anna Carr b1786 in VA married Thomas P. Gentry b1782 VA. Anna and Thomas' daughter Martha Gentry married my g-g-grandfather Mark Harris on 19 April 1838 in Dickson Co TN. I am searching for the parents of Mark. Have you come across any mention of him? Sue __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

    2. Bill Sward
    3. Ira, I, and others, have been trying to find the Virginia ancestors of this Jesse Harris II. Jesse Harris Born before 1754 migrated to N.C. before the R.W. It is believed that he came with his sister, Mary Harris, and her husband Augustine Davenport. They may have also been accompanied by an uncle Jesse Harris. Jesse Harris II married Frances "Frankie" Ward. He is believed to have served in the Rev War. He died in Davidson County, NC in 1833. A son, Jesse Sutton Harris, migrated through TN to Marshall Co, MS. His sons migrated west to Brown County, TX about 1860. The name "Jesse Sutton" has appeared frequently in Jesse II's descendant families. Jesse was apparently not a common name for the early Virginia Harris families. Would like to hear about any early Virginia Colony Jesse Harris'. Bill S ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ira L. 1. Unfamiliar with Your Harris
    2. You wrote: Do you have any info.on simon Lucas Harris born in Va. 1795 Thanks Francis Harris Response: Where were your Harrises located? Any ideas? You may have to begin with the 1930 census (online--subscription only) and then carefully work your way backwards to be sure you have the right Harris. Who did this man marry? Where was his land? All kinds of questions you have to ask yourself. Has someone done a genealogy on your Harris family? My leads came from a genealogy called The Boone Family, but others have studied my particular Harris family (including some DAR applications), and all I have had to do is try to be sure their facts were straight!!!! (Many old genealogies, which are better most of the time, than the newer ones, are flawed, and one cannot rely on them totally. As my genealogist-lecuturer-librarian friend says, Prove it!!! It would help if you knew where your people were located, as by the time your person was allegedly born, many Virginia families had moved to Kentucky. I am assuming your person was born in Virginia--what an assumption!!! If the birthplace was Virginia, one of your better leads for that time period are some hard-to-locate books called the 1787 Census of Virginia. These are p ersonal property tax lists for the year 1787, soon after the American Revolution. They include all the counties of Kentucky as well as of Virginia, but I have to warn you there are LOTS of Harrises. And, unless you know the names of the parents of your Harris, you will have to search all of them. That is a shotgun approach--you may hit the target, but again, you may not. These volumes were compiled by Nettie Schreiner-Yantis and Florine S. Love. There are three volumes, with the 3rd vol. being the index to the preceding two volumes. They are rather costly, and only large libraries, unless the libraries are in Virginia, will have them. Try a University or college library near you. Most, if not all of them, have online catalogs these days. If you don't know much about the possible location of your Harris family for that period, then you are in for a LOT of work. Most genealogists insist that you begin with censuses and work your way backwards. Why? Because the censuses from 1850 through the 1930 census give information about birthplaces, sometimes immigration dates, sometimes how long one has been married, whether they rent or own their own homes, birthplaces of parents, etc. Each census year asked different questions, of course. For example, the 1880 census asks each enumerated person where his parents were born. This information got my great-grandfather's origins back to another State--and was that luck!!! I hope you know more about your Harris than is indicated in your query. E.W.Wallace
