John, Thanks for the information. Please tell me, is it that most of the participants are finding themselves tied into the Harris line that appeared in VA around the time of the Virginia Company's Third Charter? I'm trying to get an idea of the results you all are receiving from this project, and your reactions to those results. Then maybe I can convince my husband to cough up the $100 to do it! :-) ----- Original Message ----- From: John Harris To: Angela Sent: Wednesday, April 28, 2004 6:48 PM Subject: Re: [HH] Nathan Harris of Halifax Co, NC 1766-1822 Angela, I don't have any information regarding your line. However, if you haven't heard about it, there is a Harris surname project on familytreedna.com The donor has to be a male Harris. We have submitted samples and are expecting results in a few weeks. About 50% of the donors so far have discovered that they are related to other Harris family trees with common colonial period ancestors. Good luck in your search. -John Harris Angela <angela@iamant.com> wrote: I would like to know if anybody has any evidence showing that Nathan Harris (b. 1766 in either Brunswick, VA or Halifax Co, NC, married to Rhoda Champion in 1805 in Halifax NC, d. 1822 in Warren County, GA) is the father of a Gideon Harris (born c. 1808 in Warren County, GA - married a Mary Ann Aldred who was born 1809 in Warren County, GA - he died c. 1860 in Holmes County, FL). It has not been proven that the Jessie Harriss who married Frances "Frankie" Ward was the son of William Harriss and Henrietta Baker. I have personally looked in the records of Louisa Co., VA at the Salt Lake Library in Utah and found no evidence that William and Henrietta Harris had a son named Jesse. It is very possible that there is a connection of my Jesse Harriss to these Harrises in VA but I have not found the proof for this. My line is: Jesse Harris md. Frances Ward, Jesse S. Harris md. Sarah Lambeth, George W. Harris md. Mary Ann Estes, Mary Jane Harris md. John S. Tabor Anna Orr Taber md. John R. Swart, Ora Swart md. Roy E. Thompson, Gerry Thompson md. Curtis E. Hi Ira, I can add some to the #36 Jesse Harris. His grandfather, Thomas Wesley Harris (b. 5 Aug. 1868 d. 10 Dec. 1935) m. 5 Mar. 1894 Mary Stricklen (B. 15 Dec. 1873 d. 8 Jan. 1936) Thomas W. Harris' father Thornton Peeples Harris (b. 9 May 1824 d. ? ) m. 9 May 1861 Mary Elizabeth Brooks (b. 9 Jan. 1844 d. 15 Sept. 1881) I also have their other children if anyone is interested. The father of Thornton Peeples Harris was Dorrel Young Harris and his mother was Harriet Peeples Harris. Dorrel Y. Harris was the son of Claiborne Harris and Alice Young Hill Harris. Thornton Peeples Harris was a brother of my great grandfather Dorrel Young Harris (son of Dorrel Young Harris and Harriet Peeples Harris) I have the other siblings of Dorrel and Thornton plus the children of Claiborne and Alice Harris if anyone is interested. Thanks for all of your work. Keep it up. Sarah Harris Andrews
I am looking for my great grandfather--George Harris. Ben Harris was on the 1860 census with wife Sallie and son George, 4 years old. The census was for Cedartown, Polk Co, GA. I think George is my great grandfather. Ben Haris was not on the 1880 census, just Sallie and son George. Does anyone know of this line? The question I have is how did someone declare that a husband was dead in the 1890's??Would that record be in the probabte court or would they just simply put a notice in the local paper? My great grandmother just simply switched husbands in 1893 and married an Alverson. The information we have is that she married this George Harris and had him declared dead about 1893 so she could marry again. Thanks for the help.

In December of 2003, I set out to find out if the Carrol Harris living with my great great grandfather Benjamin Harris in 1860 Hopkins County,TX was the Harris who married Martha A. Gilliam, daughter of Braddock Harris Gilliam and Mahalia Morris. I tracked her down to 1880 Camp County,TX. She had married a Moss and had another child, Mary Moss. I later found out that she had first married John Carroll Harris son of Edward Garrett Harris and Polly Morris. Does anyone know anything about Edward Garrett Harris's descendants? It is said that they moved to Louisiana, that Polly died in Texas, and that he had several sons who went to Texas. Jimmy Harris Winnsboro,TX

Dear Holly of Binghamton, NY, Are you anywhere near this LDS family history center? He came from England to MA, son Ebenezer & Christobel Crary migrated MA --> CT, and his son PETER Harris m. Mary WELCH. They migrated from CT --> Northeastern PA with the Susquehanna Company to settle in the Wyoming Valley. there are a number of other siblings in each generation, and I am looking for any and all I can find! thanks Holly Harris Jagger Binghamton NY Reason for asking the above question: You need to search the online catalog of the Family History Library at www.familysearch.org to see what may be available to help answer your questions. Unfortunately, you did not insert a date [that I can find]. Queries need three pieces of info: Name, date, place. You have two items in your query but not the vital DATES! Do a PLACE search of the catalog for these items: Connecticut - look under the topic Genealogy, in particular, and see what other holdings might help you in your search. Also, you want to check the topic Vital Records for CT. Many New England villages/towns kept records of births, marriages and deaths from early times. (Those of us with Southern lines are not so lucky!!! We have to deduce a lot from land records, court records, voting records, etc.) Many of these records have been filmed and are held by the FHL in Salt Lake City. Also, surprisingly, you may find holdings of books you need in libraries near your home, especially in the local history sections of community colleges and any colleges or universities near your home. Just don't say genealogy to the librarian--unless you want that person to have a hissy-fit. Say you are doing local history. (Genealogists can be a bore--even to other genealogists!!! They don't want to hear your family history--unless, you will listen to theirs!!!!) Then do a county search of the FHLCatalog if you know what county in CT, and then a city search. Again, look for the topics Genealogy and Vital Records. Same way with all the other places your folks lived--but moving backwards in time is more likely to get you a better fit for your folks. You may find that FHL in SLC has microfilms of the records you seek, and you can borrow these films from Salt Lake City for a short time, for a small fee. But, first, check the libraries near you. (Some of us oldsters have visition problems and prefer indexed books to old handwritten books, but we DO view lots of films with handwritten records--just to make sure the transcriber of the book got the story right. Sometimes the transcriber left out just the piece of info you need!!!) Hope you find your Harrises. Even in colonial days, this was a common surname in these colonies!!! The English claim the name, the Irish, the Welsh, and the Scots. So far, I haven't seen any one claim Harris is German or Swiss or Scandinavian, but genealogy continues to surprise and amaze me!!! Still trying to find a hole through my brick wall. Benjamin Harris of VA (prob. Farquier Co.) and later of Blount Co., TN was my 3rd great grandfather. His daughter Elizabeth married Samuel Harris, her cousin in Blount Co., TN in 1840. They came to Newton Co., MO in 1857. Neither Samuel's father (probably James) nor Benjamin's father have been found. Benjamin married Eleandor? and both came from VA. This line was closely associated and intermarried with Hitch, Roddy, Tiptons, and Kidds in Farquier Co., VA and Blount Co., TN.. Eleven Hitch was appointed guardian of Benjamin's children after his death. Benjamin is on the Rev. War monument at Maryville, TN so was probably b. abt 1760. I joined the Harris DNA Project (#10553), but haven't had any exact matches yet. Benjamin and Eleandor's children Zephenia Harris b. abt 1801 in VA Shelton Harris b. abt 1804 in VA Susannah Harris b. abt 1805 in VA Andrew M. Harris b. Jul 8, 1808 Joseph Harris b. abt 1815, Blount Co. Thomas Harris b. abt 1817, Blount Co. Elizabeth Harris b. abt 1813, Blount Co. Mary Harris b. abt 1819, Blount Co. Lucinda Harris b. abt 1822, Blount Co. Benjamin J. Harris b. Jul 30, 1826, Blount Co. Does anyone know of this Benjamin? Ron Harris
Looking for ancestors & descendants of the following Harris family. Cincinnatus B. Harris, b. 1796, was recorded with his second wife, Belana Lewis Harris [m. 1838] in Coosa Co., AL, 1840- 1870. Most of Cincinnatus' census records indicate that he was b. SC, but one census shows GA as his birthplace. [Coosa Co. was formed from Indian lands in 1832, so finding him before 1840 is difficult.] It does seem likely that he spent some time somewhere in Tennessee, but also likely a good many years in Georgia [though not necessarily recorded in the same place on each census, or even under that same given names.] He had at least three sons by an unknown first wife: [unknown son] Harris, b. 1825-1830; James Gassaway Hugh Harris, b. 1832, TN; & Wade Harris, b. 1834, either GA or AL. All of Cincinnatus' children apparently had three given names, so LATER census records may show the unknown older brother and Wade with different first names. Census records for all of the show mixed birthplaces of TN, GA, and AL. l am descended from James G. H. Harris, who, by 1860, had moved to that part of Itawamba Co., MS that became Lee Co., and had married Harriet Ann Butler. [One of her Butler great-uncles had moved to Coosa, AL from Elbert Co., GA, recorded there in 1840; and their extended famly member, Thomas Bullard, also moved to Coosa. The Butlers, Bullards & Harrises were all recorded as living in the same district, so they may have been acquainted while in Alabama. Thomas Bullard was widowed and had moved to Lee Co., MS by 1870, where he lived a few households away from my James G. H. Harris. {Thomas' sons lived close by to Ann Butler Harris' widowed mother in 1870 & 1880.}] James G. H. & Ann Butler Harris' children were: William Henry, b. 1857; Alice, b. 1861; Lucien Tison "Luce", b. 1864 [d. 1910, dsp]; Idilia Elizabeth "Ila", b. 1869; Robert Walker "Bob", b. 1871; Bertus Clifton "Bert", b. 1875; and Flavius Owen, b. 1881. This family, after James died, moved to Oklahoma; I have tracked many of their descendants, but still missing a few. [The youngest son, Flavius Owen, was in Donelly Co., TX in 1930 with his wife, Edith Jackson, and their surviving children, Holbert {b. 1914/15}, Lucille {b. 1917/18}, and Reah Virginia {b. 1921/22.} I think perhaps some of these Harrises may have stayed in Texas, but some may have ended up in California? Anyone belong to any of them??] I have the third son of Cincinnatus B., Wade, in his father's house in 1850, and married to a Jeriah or Juriah [unknown] by 1860, Coosa, AL, but haven't located him after that. Anyone recognize this couple? Cincinnatus & Belana had children: G. Augustavus "Augustine" [George?], who was recorded in Coosa, AL in1870, & in 1880 in Prentiss, MS. His wife was Margaret A. [or H.?], and their children by 1880 were: M. L. [female {Margaret?}], b. ca. 1860/61 & either married by 1880 or deceased; S. Docia, b 1865; Josephine J., b. 1869; Charles, b. ca. 1876; and Minnie, b. 1877 or 1878. Virginia C., b. 1844; m. William K. Masse? or Moore??? by 1860 in Coosa, AL; haven't located them after that census. Eliza Adeline H., b. 1846 [NFI after 1870 so far]. Stephen J. Harris [recorded with his small family in 1870, Coosa Co., AL, and also found 1880 in Prentiss Co., MS.] Stephen's wife was D. Elizabeth, and their children by 1880 were: Mary E., b. 1868; George B., b. 1869; Virginia B., b. ca. 1872; Savilla J., b. ca. 1876; and Lydia B., b. 1879. The last two children of Cincinnatus & Belana Lewis Harris were: Robert A. Balint, b. 1851, and Mary O., b. 1861. They were both single, living with their mother next door to my James G. H. Harris & family in Lee Co., MS, 1880. Look forward to hearing from anyone with knowledge of the origins of Cincinnatus Harris, or any descendant of these families. Anyone out there connect?
